I saw her file it away: a good Catholic girl come to supervise her in her detention. Every girl in England now, under the circumstances, made sure to be a good Catholic girl. Except her, of course. And, if only she knew it, me. Escorting 'nine days queen' Lady Jane Grey across the Tower of London from throne room into imprisonment is Elizabeth Tilney, who surprised even herself by volunteering for the job. All Elizabeth knows is she's keen to be away from home; she could do with some breathing space. And anyway, it won't be for long: everyone knows Jane will go free as soon as the victorious new queen is crowned. Which is a good thing because the two sixteen-year-olds, cooped up together in a room in the Gentleman Gaoler's house, couldn't be less compatible. Protestant Jane is an icily self-composed idealist, and catholic Elizabeth is...well, anything but. They are united though by their disdain for the 17-year-old to whom Jane has recently been married off: petulant, noisily aggrieved Guildford Dudley, held prisoner in a neighbouring tower and keen to pursue his perogative of a daily walk with his wife. As Jane's captivity extends into the increasingly turbulent last months of 1553, the two girls learn to live with each other, but Elizabeth finds herself drawn into the difficult relationship between the newlyweds. And when, at the turn of the year, events take an unexpected and dangerous direction, her newfound loyalties are put to the test. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Penelope Rawlins. There were two brothers - identical twins - and though I loved them both, my soul belonged to only one. Annalia Del Valle has loved Preston Sawyer all her life. The daughter of an impoverished migrant farmworker, she grew up as an outcast in what was no more than a tiny, cooped-up shack in California's Central Valley. But her heart found freedom in the land, in the wide-open spaces of Sawyer Farm, and in the boys who were her only friends. Preston has yearned for Annalia since he was a boy. But a sense of honor kept him from pursuing her until he's unable to hold back any longer and their worlds - and bodies - collide one hot summer night. A night that sets off a chain of events that will alter their lives forever. Now Annalia is back in town after disappearing without a trace for six long months. Determined to reclaim her heart, her life, and the baby she left behind - the son who was created in a moment of lust and love and pent-up yearning. Preston has survived grief, a ravaging drought, and the despair of heartache, but he's not sure he can survive Annalia again. And he might be unwilling to try. Will pride and bitterness keep him from the one thing he's always longed for? How do you heal what is irreparably broken? How do you forgive that which is unforgivable? How do you discover that real honor comes not from circumstance, but from the place deep in our hearts where truth resides? And how do you move beyond the wounds of the past to discover that some loves are as solid as the ground beneath your feet, and as enduring as the earth itself? This is a stand-alone Sign of Love novel, inspired by Gemini. New adult contemporary romance. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for listeners under the age of 18. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: J.F. Harding, Mercedes Moreno. Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2020 by The Millions and Electric Literature Named a Best Book of Fall by USA TODAY and PopSugarThe author of the "vivid and urgent...important and timely" (The New York Times Book Review) debut The Map of Salt and Stars returns with this remarkably moving and lyrical novel following three generations of Syrian Americans who are linked by a mysterious species of bird and the truths they carry close to their hearts.Five years after a suspicious fire killed his ornithologist mother, a closeted Syrian American trans boy sheds his birth name and searches for a new one. He has been unable to paint since his mother's ghost has begun to visit him each evening. As his grandmother's sole caretaker, he spends his days cooped up in their apartment, avoiding his neighborhood masjid, his estranged sister, and even his best friend (who also happens to be his longtime crush). The only time he feels truly free is when he slips out at night to paint murals on buildings in the once-thriving Manhattan neighborhood known as Little Syria. One night, he enters the abandoned community house and finds the tattered journal of a Syrian American artist named Laila Z, who dedicated her career to painting the birds of North America. She famously and mysteriously disappeared more than sixty years before, but her journal contains proof that both his mother and Laila Z encountered the same rare bird before their deaths. In fact, Laila Z's past is intimately tied to his mother's-and his grandmother's-in ways he never could have expected. Even more surprising, Laila Z's story reveals the histories of queer and transgender people within his own community that he never knew. Realizing that he isn't and has never been alone, he has the courage to officially claim a new name: Nadir, an Arabic name meaning rare.As unprecedented numbers of birds are mysteriously drawn to the New York City skies, Nadir enlists the help of his family and friends to unravel what happened to Laila Z and the rare bird his mother died trying to save. Following his mother's ghost, he uncovers the silences kept in the name of survival by his own community, his own family, and within himself, and discovers the family that was there all along.Featuring Zeyn Joukhadar's signature "magical and heart-wrenching" (The Christian Science Monitor) storytelling, The Thirty Names of Night is a timely exploration of how we all search for and ultimately embrace who we are.

OPAL AXIS is Leila Armush and Jim Harris. The disc is made up of compositions by Leila and Jim, who, in spite of different musical tastes, both pursue unique yet accessible music with somewhat ambiguous lyrics. Opal Axis started in 2005, when Leila wanted to start a band and Jim had just come out of one. From the beginning, things clicked, and a working and creative process quickly developed. They attributed this partially to the fact that their birthdays are just days apart, both being Libras, they named the band Opal Axis for Libra's birthstone. In 2006, a classical pianist named Chad joined the band as an auxiliary member. His contributions on both piano and electronics can be heard on the band's current self-titled EP. Opal Axis played a series of shows at coffee houses on the peninsula in 2007, but spent 2008 in the studio recording. Opal Axis is currently back on the live performance circuit throughout the Bay Area. Leila was born in 1981 and grew up in Dallas. As a child, she took piano lessons and learned to play "by ear", which laid the foundation for the composing she began as a young teen. At age 15, inspired by then-favorites Sarah McLachlan and Jewel, Leila began private voice lessons and found her voice. Her high school advisor helped her create CDs of her music, which she sold at school. When she graduated at 17, she had written more than 100 songs. In college, she upgraded from a cassette-tape recorder to a four-track. At that time she also found a deep connection and profound appreciation for the music of Tori Amos, who inspired her to reach a new level of complexity and maturity in both her compositions and lyrics. Throughout college she worked on her own, spending more time cooped up recording in her dorm than socializing. After graduating, she moved from Austin to the Bay Area and decided it was time to work with other musicians. She met talented guitar player Jim Harris in 2005 and together they became Opal Axis. Jim was born in 1965 in Evanston, IL. He started playing guitar at age 12, and discovered synthesizers and electronics in 1987 when playing in a New Edge guitar-synth duet. By the mid '90s he was on his own, composing down-tempo electronic tracks with spoken word and monologues on top. In 1997 he was signed and the self-titled CD R.U.O.K.? came out on Quantum Loop, a sub-label of 21st Circuitry in San Francisco. The CD (a mix of Eno, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and Laurie Anderson) got great reviews but sank like a rock, as it was too arty for the general public. Wanting to make music that was more accessible and owning a Celtic Bouzouki (a.k.a. octave mandolin), Jim teamed up with a friend and formed the Capo Brothers, a guitar-bouzouki duet. Since they were instrumental, their high level of musicianship and catchy material allowed the band to play many shows around the Bay Area until life caused the band to go into an inactive state. With time on his hands, Jim answered Leila's Craigslist ad in 2005 and Opal Axis was born. Leila: Vox, production, piano and electronics Jim: Guitars, production and electronics And Chad Glenn, piano and electronics.
