Time and the Gods: The Book That Influenced Millions of Fantasy Writers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 310min
Time and the Gods is the first collection by Lord Dunsany, and in many ways, it is the first book of modern fantasy short stories. Lord Dunsany was the most influential writer in the genre that came to be known as fantasy, of which his stories set trends that continue to this day.He was an influence on Tolkien, Lovecraft, Gaiman, Borges, Clarke, Moorcock, Yeats, Le Guin, and many more besides. Worlds of monsters and magic, strange names, and stranger tales were all born in Dunsany’s work. Before him, the closest thing to fantasy that existed was folktales; after him, people built worlds beyond imagining and epic stories in the lands he first explored. ungekürzt. Language: English. Lord Dunsany's Tales of Wonder: Stories from a Magical World , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 245min
No wonder art and music have held such a deep and abiding fascination for us, regardless of our economic station in life. As Nietzsche opined, "Without music, life would be a mistake". To which I would add literature, sport, or any diversion that provides us with a moment of unexpected bliss. We have been engaged far too long in moments of pain and suffering, and anything that can offer us a glimpse of solace, of hope, of entertainment, is to be welcomed with open arms and open hearts. It is for this very reason that I am happy to announce that the MSAC Philosophy Group has decided to republish Lord Dunsany's remarkable book Tales of Wonder, which, in this edition, has the newly added subtitle, Stories from a Magical World. Lord Dunsany was Edward Plunkett's pen name, and he was a very successful author of numerous books, plays, and short stories. He possessed a remarkable imagination and created fantastical landscapes peopled with unique characters. To listen to his short stories is to be transported to another time and to another place and, in the midst of it all, to be enthralled by the marvel of it all. His creative method perhaps gives us a glimpse into this unusual man: Dunsany's writing habits were considered peculiar by some. Lady Beatrice said that "he always sat on a crumpled old hat while composing his tales". (The hat was eventually stolen by a visitor to Dunsany Castle.) Dunsany almost never rewrote anything; everything he ever published was a first draft. Much of his work was penned with quill pens, which he made himself; Lady Beatrice was usually the first to see the writings and would help type them. It has been said that Lord Dunsany would sometimes conceive stories while hunting and would return to the castle and draw in his family and servants to reenact his visions before he set them on paper. It is our hope that this new edition will serve as an introduction for new listeners to enjoy the timeles ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Erik Yount. The King of Elfland's Daughter , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 440min
The King of Elfland’s Daughter, written by Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany or more commonly known as Lord Dunsany, is a classic of early fantasy fiction and its prose is the very sound of fantasy. One can hear the echos of this tale in later works by such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The Parliament of Erl tells their king that they want a more magical king for the future. They believe magic will bring fame to their beloved, but unknown, little village. Honoring their request, the king sends his son to Elfland to seek as his bride the King of Elfland's Daughter. The story travels from Erl to Elfland and back again meeting along the way magical creatures and enchanted lands as well as landscapes among the fields we know. The story unfolds as the magical and mundane worlds fail to mix quite as easily as the Parliament of Erl had planned. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Heidi Wall. Two Bottles of Relish: The Little Tales of Smethers and Other Stories , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 528min
Lord Dunsany mixes reality with fantasy in this forgotten collection of modern detective stories. Some are macabre, others have a lighter and more amusing touch, but every story stimulates the imagination and reveals the acknowledged master of the short story at his very best. Smethers is a travelling salesman for Numnumo, who make a relish for meats and savouries. He shares a flat with an Oxford graduate called Linley, who fancies himself as a detective and to whom Scotland Yard is inclined to turn if they encounter a particularly challenging mystery. When a pretty young girl disappears and her lodger is suspected of murdering her, two bottles of Numnumo relish are the only clues, and Smethers is sent to gather more information.... Amongst the hundreds of fantasy stories for which the Irish dramatist, poet and writer Lord Dunsany became deservedly famous, there was one solitary little collection of detective stories. Selected by Ellery Queen as an 'unequivocal keystone' in the history of crime writing, this quirky collection is a mixture of the masterful and the macabre, an audiobook that lovers of detective stories and tales of the unexpected will want to savour. ungekürzt.
