Reissued in paperback with a revised and expanded Introduction: In the late 1920s, Reimar Horten began experimenting with flying models equipped with fuselages, stabilizers, rudders, and elevators, but his life's work involved systematically removing these components from models until he could achieve flight with only the wing. Not only were pure wings more difficult to design with the stability and controls needed to fly, they were harder to place in practical roles not already filled by conventional aircraft operating for less support and lower operational costs. Always seeking to increase performance and efficiency, Horten adopted a multidisciplinary approach after flying his first piloted wing in 1933, eventually breaking new ground in cockpit design and construction materials. His most important innovation was the unique pattern he developed to distribute lift over his wings, the result of his efforts to refine the aerodynamic control of all-wing aircraft, often while working alone and in difficult circumstances. Two days after Horten passed away in 1993, the Royal Aeronautical Society awarded him the British Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Aeronautics.

Our relentless drive to create makes us unique among living creatures. What is special about the human brain that enables us to innovate? Why don't cows choreograph dances? Why don't squirrels build elevators to their treetops? Why don't alligators invent speedboats? Weaving together the arts and sciences, neuroscientist David Eagleman and composer Anthony Brandt explore the need for novelty, the simulation of possible futures, and the social components that drive the inventiveness of our species. Taking us on a tour of human creativity from Picasso to concept cars to umbrellas to lunar travel, Brandt and Eagleman explore the cognitive software that generates new ideas, and illuminate the key facets of a creative mentality. Through understanding our ability to innovate - our most profound, mysterious, and deeply human capacity - we can meet the challenge of remaking our constantly shifting world. ungekürzt. The lines are drawn, with the Confederacy in the East and the First World Alliance in the West. In hopes of finding a refuge from the looming war, the Alliance is sending Captain Alexander de Leon to explore an Earth-type planet, code-named Wonderland, but at the last minute before launch, a Confederate fleet leaves orbit on a trajectory that threatens both the mission and Alliance sovereignty. Love is just an elevator ride away . . . Sofia isn’t exactly running away from love, but she has other priorities. Still, she can’t help but notice her new neighbor, Jamie, in the elevator every morning. Her first impression tells her he’s totally type-A and way too serious to be any fun at all. But try as she might, Sofia can’t deny that he’s tall, well-dressed, and handsome - and he smells so good. What Sofia doesn’t know is that Jamie’s been wondering about her, too. He can’t seem to get her out of his mind - she’s young and gorgeous, but he thinks she might be a little crazy. Jamie and Sofia quickly learn that first impressions can’t always be trusted, and sometimes opposites really do attract. Thirty Postcards Away is a fun, sexy, urban tale of friendship, exes, chance meetings, forgiveness . . . and elevators. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Julia Whelan, Will Damron.
