Hence the title of the book; Tressell paints the workers as "philanthropists" who throw themselves into backbreaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters.The hero of the book, Frank Owen, is a socialist who believes that the capitalist system is the real source of the poverty. He tries to convince his fellow workers of his worldview, but finds that their education has trained them to distrust their own thoughts. "No Compromise with the Evil of Slavery" is an address delivered in the Broadway Tabernacle, New York, in 1854 where he called for an immediate end to slavery. In "Address to the Colonization Society", Garrison advocated the destruction of the “vampire of slavery”. "The American Union" was a call to the people of the free states and New England to resist slavery with all their might. "Truisms" consists of a list of hypocritical ideas about slavery, exposing its immorality.
