The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, Hörbuch, Digital, 1500min
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (1914) is a novel by Robert Tressell. Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognize the inequity and iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councilors provide a backdrop for his main target - the workers who think that a better life is "not for the likes of them". Hence the title of the book; Tressell paints the workers as "philanthropists" who throw themselves into backbreaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters. The hero of the book, Frank Owen, is a socialist who believes that the capitalist system is the real source of the poverty. He tries to convince his fellow workers of his worldview, but finds that their education has trained them to distrust their own thoughts. Much of the book consists of conversations, or more often of lectures by Owen in the face of their jeering; presumably based on Tressell’s own experiences. Language: English. Narrator: Steven Green. William Lloyd Garrison Box Set: Address to the Colonization Society; No Compromise with the Evil of Slavery; The American Union; Address to the Slaves of the United States; On the Constitution and the Union; Truisms; To the Public; & Dred Scott and Disunion , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 75min
William Lloyd Garrison (1805-1879) was a journalist who helped to lead the successful campaign against slavery in the United States. In 1830, he started an abolitionist paper, The Liberator; its first issue carried the author's editorial, "To the Public", in which he contended for the immediate enfranchisement of the slave population. "No Compromise with the Evil of Slavery" is an address delivered in the Broadway Tabernacle, New York, in 1854 where he called for an immediate end to slavery. In "Address to the Colonization Society", Garrison advocated the destruction of the “vampire of slavery”. "The American Union" was a call to the people of the free states and New England to resist slavery with all their might. "Truisms" consists of a list of hypocritical ideas about slavery, exposing its immorality. In "Dred Scott and Disunion" Garrison protests against the Dred Scott decision, against the infamous Fugitive Slave Law and against all injustice, reiterating the truths of the Declaration of Independence, and calling for its practical enforcement throughout the land. ungekürzt. God Is for Real: And He Longs to Answer Your Most Difficult Questions , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 383min
God Is for Real addresses the questions: What is God like? Why are things the way they are in spite of who God is? If Todd's first book, Heaven Is for Real, was about the then and there of heaven, God Is for Real is about the here and now on earth: Why are there are so many hypocritical church people? Why do Christians make such a big deal about the cross? Why doesn't God seem to answer our biggest prayers? People are tired of pat answers offered up in churchy language explaining away their questions; we want the down-and-dirty truth. What bothers us about life and faith is real and gritty. We need a plainspoken voice to offer God's answers to difficult struggles and painful doubts. Todd charges into these subjects with a fireman's courage, a small-town friend's vulnerability, and a local pastor's compassion. He helps articulate the questions people have, then gives them relevant biblical wisdom for taking their next steps in faith. God is ready to meet you! Are you ready to meet him? ungekürzt. The King in Love: Edward VII's Mistresses , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 817min
The King in Love is an all-embracing account of the loves of that celebrated royal womanizer, Edward VII - as prince of Wales and as king. It is also a study of the three women with whom the king was most deeply in love - his "official" mistresses, Lillie Langtry, Daisy Warwick, and Alice Keppel. Spanning three decades and packed with incident, scandal, and high romance, the story is set in the extravagant and hypocritical world of late Victorian and Edwardian society. It is full of colorful characters: Edward's beautiful and betrayed wife, Alexandra; the three cuckolded husbands - Edward Langtry, the earl of Warwick, and the Honorable George Keppel; the flamboyant Oscar Wilde; the sensuous Sarah Bernhardt; the dissipated Prince Albert Victor; and the sexually complex W. E. Gladstone. Royal biographer Theo Aronson draws on new and unfamiliar material in this vivid book and reassesses many aspects of his subjects' lives. He challenges long-established myths and reveals much that was hitherto unknown - not least the extraordinary scene that took place at the deathbed of King Edward VII. The result is a brilliant evocation of a world and a way of life that is gone forever. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Shaun Grindell. Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 447min
In Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right, Goldberg speaks for the millions of Americans who are saying: Enough! Enough of lunatics like Rosie O'Donnell, who think "Radical Christianity" is "as big a threat to America as Radical Islam". Enough of the hyperbolic liberal rhetoric comparing Bush to Hitler and Abu Ghraib to a Saddam Hussein torture chamber. And please, enough of the military-hating crazies who run San Francisco! But Goldberg has also had it with hypocritical Republicans who say they're for small government but then spend our hard-earned tax money like Imelda Marcos in a shoe store. He's also had it with weak and timid Republicans who won't stand up and fight against racial preferences, too afraid that the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of the world will call them bigots. In plain English, he's had it with Republicans who are afraid to be conservative! The 2006 election was a wake-up call, he warns, and if the wimps on the Right fail to regain their courage, recover their principles, and reclaim their sense of fiscal responsibility, the crazies on the Left just might win the White House in 2008. ungekürzt. Tess of the D'urbervilles , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1025min
Tess of the d'Urbervilles is the 19th century novel lately thought to be one of the inspirations of E .L.James' Fifty Shades of Grey. It depicts the life of an impressionable, naive, somewhat educated young woman, who yearns to be free to live her own life, but finds herself constricted by the bonds of the sexual, religious and socially hypocritical customs that have surrounded her from birth. Considered a Victorian Realist, Thomas Hardy criticized social constraints on those living in the 19th and early 20th century through most of his novels. He was also a renowned poet and many of his works were set to music by notable English composers. He was an Anglican who questioned traditional Christian views and had difficulty reconciling the 'horrors of pain' with the so called existence of a loving God. He also showed in his writings a fascination with the supernatural even as he held a strong emotional attachment to the Christian liturgy and rituals which were a major influence in his childhood. The narrator, Jennifer M. Dixon, is a board-certified Music Therapist and Licensed Counselor, veteran of Michigan Opera, Piccolo Opera and Community Theater. ungekürzt. Language: English.
