This story is a lighthearted look at the radio drama production process as seen by the members of an amateur dramatics society in a sleepy suburb of Swansea. It can't be difficult to make your own play for radio, can it? And with a LAMDA-trained professional actor at the helm, surely nothing could go wrong. After their attempt at Mike Leigh-inspired improvisation doesn't exactly produce satisfactory results, things start to look up when a visiting celebrity agrees to step in and play the lead role. Starring Adam Hall, Susan Casanove, Andrew Macbean, Nick Lucas, Katharine Waugh, Ceri Gifford, and Christopher Timothy Language: English. Narrator: full cast. ARAB humanist is a story of an Arab woman who rebelled against her family while living in America. She wanted to claim her own independence and womanhood but was crippled by her naivety, poverty, and lack of a good social safety net. The intention of this story is not to demonize the Arab or the American culture. From the viewpoint of the author, the poor, especially women, in all cultures are treated badly - just in different ways. The ‘Voice of the Year’ competition introduced and sponsored by Naxos AudioBooks and The Times books pages, edited by Erica Wagner, took place in Spring 2004. Readers without any formal drama training or professional acting experience were invited to send in recordings of a short extract of either Dickens, Austen or from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and an own choice. The judging panel - Martin Jarvis, Juliet Stevenson, and Anton Lesser, with John Tydeman, David Timson, and Christina Hardyment (audiobook reviewer for The Times), under the chairmanship of Naxos AudioBooks’ managing director Nicolas Soames – chose the winner and finalists from nearly one thousand entries. First prize was to read a classic for Naxos AudioBooks. The winner was Maurice West, a fifty-five-year-old English teacher from Croydon. His chosen piece was from Tom Jones and he was invited to read an extended abridgement – 6-CD set – of the same novel. ‘We were very impressed by the natural storytelling talent shown by Mr West, with a strong narrative character, a sense of period style as well as a firm grasp of the many characters who appear,’ said Nicolas Soames. After graduating from Cambridge, Mr West applied to LAMDA on the main acting course and was accepted. Unfortunately, he didn’t have sufficient funds to take up the offer and had to confine his thespian interests to amateur dramatics. Now, later in life, he has a chance to open a new thread of activity. This 6 CD recording of Tom Jones is an important addition to the eighteenth-century audio library on Naxos AudioBooks.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio. Language: English. Narrator: Maurice West. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/naxo/000690/bk_naxo_000690_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

This is the story of how Thomas Day, a young man of means, decided he could never marry a woman with brains, spirit or fortune. Instead, he adopted two orphan girls from a Foundling Hospital, and set about educating them to become the meek, docile women he considered marriage material. Unsurprisingly, Day's marriage plans did not run smoothly. Having returned one orphan early on, his girl of choice, Sabrina Sidney, would also fall foul of the experiment. From then on, she led a difficult life, inhabiting a curious half-world - an ex-orphan, and not quite a ward; a governess, and not quite a fiancée. But Sabrina also ended up figuring in the life of scientists and luminaries as disparate as Erasmus Darwin and Joseph Priestley, as well as that pioneering generation of women writers who included Fanny Burney, Maria Edgeworth and Anna Seward. In HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT WIFE, Wendy has found a story that echoes her concerns about women's historic powerlessness, and captures a moment when ideas of human development and child raising underwent radical change. Read by Dan Pirrie. Daniel Pirrie trained as an actor at LAMDA and to date has worked in theatre, TV, film, radio and audiobooks. TV roles include playing Major Bryant in the second series of Downton Abbey, Dr. Who: The God Complex, Case Histories and Holby for the BBC. Exclusively from Audible Hardy's first major literary success, here brought to life by narrator Nathaniel Parker, is the story of the independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits her uncle's farm, the largest estate in the area. She surprises the villagers of Weatherbury by deciding to run it herself rather than hire a manager. Attracted to this bold young woman are three very different suitors all vying for her affections. They include the lonely gentleman-farmer Boldwood, the young and handsome but inconsiderate Sergeant Troy and the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak. Serving to unsettle and complicate her life, the three contrasting men show the many facets of love. But Bathsheba's indecision and inability to commit leads to some disastrous consequences.
