Lost Treasure , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 12min
David Caradoc Evans (1878-1945) was a Welsh story writer, novelist, and playwright. Evans was brought up in a Welsh-speaking community in Cardiganshire, and although he learned English at school and always wrote in English, his work is soaked in Welsh syntax and vocabulary. Evans left school at 14 and worked throughout Wales in a series of menial jobs before moving to London, where he worked as a draper's apprentice. It was this background which influenced Lost Treasure, which tells the story of Hugh, a miserly Welsh draper in London who scrimps and saves until he has ten sovereigns. This he changes for a ten-pound note, which he gives to his wife, Millie, for safekeeping. Millie hides it somewhere quite safe...so safe indeed that she forgets where she has put it. The news of the loss of the ten-pound note sends Hugh, his career, his social life, and Millie's destiny into a tailspin and changes their destiny forever. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Working Poor: Invisible in America , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 913min
Nobody who works hard should be poor in America, writes Pulitzer Prize-winner David Shipler. Clear-headed, rigorous, and compassionate, he journeys deeply into the lives of individual store clerks and factory workers, farm laborers and sweat-shop seamstresses, illegal immigrants in menial jobs, and Americans saddled with immense student loans and paltry wages. They are known as the working poor. They perform labor essential to America's comfort. They are white and black, Latino and Asian - men and women in small towns and city slums trapped near the poverty line, where the margins are so tight that even minor setbacks can cause devastating chain reactions. Shipler shows how liberals and conservatives are both partly right - that practically every life story contains failure by both the society and the individual. Braced by hard fact and personal testimony, he unravels the forces that confine people in the quagmire of low wages. And unlike most works on poverty, this book also offers compelling portraits of employers struggling against razor-thin profits and competition from abroad. With pointed recommendations for change that will challenge Republicans and Democrats alike, The Working Poor stands to make a difference. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Ganim. The Golden Thirteen: Recollections of the First Black Naval Officers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 508min
In January 1944, 16 black enlisted men gathered at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois to begin a cram course that would turn them into the U.S. Navy's first African American officers on active duty. The men believed that if they failed they would set back the course of racial justice, so they banded together and all 16 passed the course. Twelve were commissioned as ensigns and a 13th was made a warrant officer. Years later, these pioneers came to be known as the Golden Thirteen, but at the outset they were treated more as pariahs than pioneers. Often denied the privileges and respect routinely accorded white naval officers, they were given menial assignments unworthy of their abilities and training. Yet despite this discrimination, these inspirational young men broke new ground and opened the door for generations to come. In 1986, oral historian Paul Stillwell began recording the memories of the surviving members of the Golden Thirteen. He also interviewed three white officers who served with and supported the efforts of these men during World War II. This book collects their stories. ungekürzt. Language: English. Roof , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 155min
In the near future, the world has hardened.Opportunities are scarce and dwindling. Society has increasingly changed, and not for the better. Every day robots and machines replace humans in the workforce, not just in the most menial jobs, but also throughout the cubicles of the corporations that dominate the cities. Peter Harkness is one of the few humans lucky enough to still have a job, but automatons have infiltrated his workforce. How long will his own job last? What did his roommate tell him? Oh yeah: "Nothing is ever not possible," Brutus said. "We're making processors smaller and smaller. Code is becoming intensely complex and powerful. The sheer bulk of those executable shells can shed strands of isomer code fragments. Even if something seems not possible now, it will certainly be possible in the future. I see no reason why code can't seek its own level, form its own connections, relays." What secrets do the roofs of the city have waiting for Peter? He is left wondering who his allies truly are in this near-futuristic dystopian world, reminiscent of Asimov, Heinlein and the goldenage of science fiction. And yet, there may be hope. ungekürzt. They must share rooms, do chores, attend lessons, and engage in charitable work, no matter how well born they might be. She even forces them to wear mobcaps! Refusal could lead to finding themselves at the receiving end of Mrs. Drummond's cane - if they were lucky. The unlucky ones could be dismissed and found a position...as a menial servant.Everything and everyone at the school is uniformly horrid. Lydia hates them all, except possibly the music master, Mr. Amberson, who seems to have the oddest ideas about her. He might just understand her better than she understands herself. Can she find a way to live up to his strange expectations, or will she spend the rest of her life as a scullery maid? ungekürzt. The Siege: Agent of Rome, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 813min
AD 270. Rome has ruled Syria for over three centuries. But now the weakened empire faces a desperate threat: Queen Zenobia of Palmyra has turned her Roman-trained army against her former masters, and the once invincible legions have been crushed. Arabia, Palestine and Egypt have fallen, and now Antioch, Syria's capital, stands exposed. Cassius Corbulo is a young intelligence agent fresh from officer training. He has been assigned the menial task of rounding up wounded legionaries, but then urgent new orders arrive. He is the only ranking Roman officer left in the line of the Palmyran advance. He must take command of the fort of Alauran, the last stronghold still in Roman hands, and hold it against the enemy until reinforcements arrive. What Cassius finds at Alauran would daunt the most seasoned veteran, let alone a 19- year-old with no experience of war. A mere scattering of divided and demoralised legionaries remain, backed up by some fractious Syrian auxiliaries and a drunken Praetorian Guardsman. With the Palmyrans just days away, Cassius must somehow find the discipline, resourcefulness and courage to organise the garrison, save Alauran and secure Rome's eastern frontier.... ungekürzt.
