A lover of strict form, best-selling poet Victoria Chang turns to compact Japanese waka, powerfully innovating on tradition while continuing her pursuit of one of life's hardest questions: how to let go.In The Trees Witness Everything, Victoria Chang reinvigorates language by way of concentration, using constraint to illuminate and free the wild interior. Largely composed in various Japanese syllabic forms called 'wakas,' each poem is shaped by pattern and count. This highly original work innovates inside the lineage of great poets including W.S. Merwin, whose poem titles are repurposed as frames and mirrors for the text, stitching past and present in complex dialogue. Chang depicts the smooth, melancholic isolation of the mind while reaching outward to name - with reverence, economy and whimsy - the ache of wanting, the hawk and its shadow, our human urge to hide the minute beneath the light.

Former fighter pilot Keith Rosenkranz and poet Sam Hammill on this edition of Fresh Air. During the first Gulf War, Keith Rosenkranz flew thirty combat missions in his F-16. He wrote about the experience in his book, Vipers in the Storm: Diary of a Gulf War Fighter Pilot. In January, Sam Hamill was invited by First Lady Laura Bush to the White House for a symposium on poetry. Because of his opposition to the war it was not an invitation he welcomed. In response he created the Web site www.poetsagainstthewar.org inviting poets to submit their poems. Thousands of poets responded including Rita Dove, W.S. Merwin, Adrienne Rich, and Poet Laureate Billy Collins. When the White House heard about the site, the symposium was cancelled. A new anthology Poets Against The War collects 13,000 of these anti-war poems. Hammill helped edit it. Hammill is the author of 13 volumes of poetry and is a Buddhist, pacifist and an ex-Marine. Leave it to the Serpent people to steal everything, including Jake’s parents. Determined to find them, he seeks out his next-door neighbors, the twins Ashley and Elijah. Together with Merwin, a mysterious stranger of the Order of Rasputin, they begin a journey of discovery and fear, of a people called the Summer People, and their age-old enemies the Sibilant. “To create peace the Summer People basically gave up their king”, Ashley said. “Put him in shackles and chains, carried him off to the Sibilant homeland, a dark and terrible place with lots of screaming and pain. That’s the only way the Sibilant would stop fighting.” She leaned in then, began whispering. “According to stories, he’s still there today, waiting to be freed. Waiting for a hero to be born.” Eyes narrowing, “Waiting times such as these.” “Time like these?” Jake asked. “What’s so special about these times?” “You”, Ashley replied, eyes narrowing. Grabbing his hand. “It’s you, Jake! He’s been waiting all this time for you!” ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rachael Sparrow.
