In the future as Bova here imagines it, Earth is an ecological nightmare, and humanity may well go the way of the dinosaurs. But overhead orbits salvation. A vast metallic island in space, the Trikon station conducts genetic research too risky to be done on earth - research that could save the planet. Yet Commander Dan Tighe discovers that the Trikon’s major project is espionage. Its international crew is split into warring factions; its scientists - consumed by greed, lust, and drugs - run the lab for their own gain. Murder, intrigue, and romantic jealousy threaten to sabotage the station’s crucial work. Only Commander Tighe can save the Trikon - and only Trikon can save the Earth. Ben Bova is a six-time winner of the Hugo Award, a former editor of Analog, former editorial director of Omni, and past president of the National Space Society and the Science Fiction Writers of America. A victorious American army, having driven through Belgium almost unopposed, ran head-on into German soldiers on their own home ground, in some of the most rugged country in western Germany - and at the beginning of the worst fall and winter weather in decades. In late 1944, American forces advanced into the hilly, heavily wooded Hürtgen Forest southeast of Aachen, Germany. For weeks, without a clear-cut reason for attacking through the forest, US commanders nevertheless ordered units of as many as seven divisions into the woods to be chewed up by German infantry and artillery. Many companies suffered huge numbers of casualties. The Battle of the Bulge interrupted the Hürtgen Forest battles but did not end them. The Bulge provided a hiatus for the wartorn countryside around the forest and the Roer River dams. Then, beginning in January 1945, American forces resumed their offensive and were finally able to break through after one of the bloodiest and, for the US Army, most disastrous campaigns of World War II. The book examines uncertainty of command at the army, corps, and division levels and emphasizes the confusion and fear of ground combat at the level of company and battalion - "where they do the dying." Its gripping description of the battle is based on government records and a rich selection of first-person accounts. Forrest C. Pogue Award, presented by the Eisenhower Center for American Studies. The book is published by Texas A&M University Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Hassinger. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/065982/bk_acx0_065982_sample.mp3. Michael B. Druxman followed his dreams to Hollywood, and although he may not have "reached the stars", his persistence made it possible for the vast majority of those dreams to come true. His new book My Forty-Five Years in Hollywood and How I Escaped Alive, a memoir, is the story of that remarkable adventure.Beginning with his boyhood in Seattle and Soap Lake, Washington, it traces his steps on his journey to Los Angeles, where, without any show business contacts whatsoever, he was able to create a successful career for himself as a publicist, playwright, screenwriter, director, and Hollywood historian. From Jimmy Durante and Elvis Presley to Jack Lemmon and Cary Grant to the cast of the hit Dallas television series and legendary producer Roger Corman, the work is filled with amusing stories of Druxman's encounters and lessons learned from Hollywood's rich and famous.Screenwriter Charles Edward Pogue (The Fly, Dragonheart) reports: "Michael B. Druxman may have escaped Hollywood after forty-five years, but he also survived and thrived there all those years...hardly a feat for the faint-hearted. His entertaining and amusing memoir tells us how he did it. With tenacity and talent, he went from PR agent to screenwriter to director and, along the way, rubbed shoulders with a fascinating array of characters, con men, and artists. From the stars to the strugglers, from the saints to the scammers, from those who soared to those who took a swan dive, they're all here. We meet the great, the near-great, the not-so-great who make Hollywood their home and their hunting ground. Druxman depicts their triumphs and follies, as well as his own, with the nuanced eye of one who has seen Hollywood at its meanest and most magnificent."And, according to writer-director Bruce Kimmel (The First Nudie Musical): "Michael Druxman's new book is like taking a time machine back to those thrilling days of yesteryear, a time when the ungekürzt.
