The Longest Rescue: The Life and Legacy of Vietnam POW William A. Robinson , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 609min
While serving as a crew chief aboard a US Air Force Rescue helicopter, Airman First Class William A. Robinson was shot down and captured in Ha Tinh Province, North Vietnam, on September 20, 1965. After a brief stint at the "Hanoi Hilton", Robinson endured 2,703 days in multiple North Vietnamese prison camps, including the notorious Briarpatch and various compounds at Cu Loc, known by the inmates as the Zoo. No enlisted man in American military history has been held as a prisoner of war longer than Robinson. For seven and a half years, he faced daily privations and endured the full range of North Vietnam's torture program. In The Longest Rescue: The Life and Legacy of Vietnam POW William A. Robinson, Glenn Robins tells Robinson's story using an array of sources, including declassified US military documents, translated Vietnamese documents, and interviews from the National Prisoner of War Museum. Robins's powerful narrative not only demonstrates how Robinson and his fellow prisoners embodied the dedication and sacrifice of America's enlisted men but also explores their place in history and memory. ungekürzt. Peter of New Amsterdam: A Story of Old New York , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 181min
Bring history back to life through Jim Hodges' historically accurate, exciting, and edifying audio recordings. Twelve-year-old Peter Hulbert is left an orphan in Leyden, Holland, as the rest of the Pilgrims sail for the New World. A merchant of the West India Company takes him to New Amsterdam as his servant. Here Peter's adventures begin in this historically accurate tale of life in old New York. The purpose of this story is to show children the home life of the colonists they meet in their history books. So that the stories may appeal more directly to the children, they are told from the viewpoint of a child and purport to have been related by a child. It is entertaining as well as instructive for young people to hear of the toil and privations in the homes of those who came into a new world to build a country for themselves, and such facts are not to be found in history books. Written in the 1800s, the Young Listeners Collection features children's stories from yesterday's classics. Learn from our nation's founders whose Christian faith was lived out in the lives of the characters in these stories. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jim Hodges. Under a Full Moon: The Last Lynching in Kansas , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 635min
Under a Full Moon: The Last Lynching in Kansas tells of the tragic abduction and death of an eight-year-old girl at the hands of a repeat offender in 1932. This crime stands apart as the last mob lynching in Kansas. Based on true events, this account takes a deep dive into the psycho-social complexities of pioneer times and their impact on this particular crime and the justice meted out to the perpetrator. Beginning in the year 1881, and written in a chronological narrative non-fiction format, author Alice Kay Hill, vividly weaves the stories of the victims and the families involved. She reveals how mental and physical abuse, social isolation, privations of homesteading, strong dreams and even stronger personalities all factored into the criminal and his crimes. Spanning the years of settlement to the beginnings of the Dust Bowl, historic events are lived as daily news by the seven families whose lives become intertwined. Historically accurate and written with an intimate knowledge of the area, Under a Full Moon is as personal as a family diary, as vivid as a photo album found in an attic trunk, and will remain with the listener long after the book is closed. ungekürzt. The Grinding of the Millstone: Based on the Life Story of Vasile Caniuca , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 251min
From a desperate stowaway to Canada’s luxury custom home builder and philanthropist, The Grinding of the Millstone is a tale of a pursuit of a seemingly far-fetched dream, the power of hope, and unshakable faith in God. This book is a real-life portrayal of God's faithfulness and grace and defiant power of the human spirit.Vasile was born and raised in a mountainous region in northern Romania. Toughened by hardships of life in a rugged landscape, his eyes were drawn upward by the mountains to search for something greater...something beyond and greater than himself. He was, and he still is a dreamer! His dream of a better life took him on an epic journey through war-torn Yugoslavia on foot across treacherous mountains to a precarious existence as an illegal laborer in Greece and ultimately, on a near-tragic voyage across the Atlantic with a company of stowaways in a cargo shipping container to Canada. Somewhere in dangers and privations, he came to a God who was interested intimately in his well-being, who, in his love and grace, had his hand on Vasile's life. "I hope that this book will remind you of the fact that the defining factor in your life’s journey is resourcefulness not resources; and that you are resourceful beyond imagination!" Voodoo and Power: The Politics of Religion in New Orleans 1881-1940 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 537min
The racialized and exoticized cult of Voodoo occupies a central place in the popular image of the Crescent City. But as Kodi A. Roberts argues in Voodoo and Power, the religion was not a monolithic tradition handed down from African ancestors to their American-born descendants. Instead, a much more complicated patchwork of influences created New Orleans Voodoo, allowing it to move across boundaries of race, class, and gender. By employing late 19th and early 20th-century first-hand accounts of Voodoo practitioners and their rituals, Roberts provides a nuanced understanding of who practiced Voodoo and why. Voodoo in New Orleans, a mélange of religion, entrepreneurship, and business networks, stretched across the color line in intriguing ways. Voodoo rituals and institutions also drew inspiration from the surrounding milieu, including the privations of the Great Depression, the city s complex racial history, and the free-market economy. Money, employment, and business became central concerns for the religion s practitioners: to validate their work, some began operating from recently organized Spiritual Churches, entities that were tax exempt and thus legitimate in the eyes of the state of Louisiana. Practitioners even leveraged local figures like the mythohistoric Marie Laveau for spiritual purposes and entrepreneurial gain. All the while, they contributed to the cultural legacy that fueled New Orleans s tourist industry and drew visitors and their money to the Crescent City. The book is published by Louisiana State University Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Thomas Stone. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/083716/bk_acx0_083716_sample.mp3. Gift or Theft
Seema is a gardener and a dreamer. She is almost content with her safe life, sharing a flat with her best friend. Until, on a girls' night out, a beguiling older man approaches her. He leads her into a world of wealth and sophistication she's completely unused to. Through him she arrives at a place where both dreams and nightmares come true. Has seduction crossed the line into manipulation or coercion? Worse, is the relationship sliding into a supernatural realm - where a man's obsession with blood will lead to Seema's death? About Crocodiles and Good Intentions "It's an amazing achievement. Lady Bag excels herself. I was shocked, appalled, mystified, uplifted, tickled pink and hugely entertained. There's no person in all of literature anything like her... Above all, the human spirit (and some doggy spirit...) rises above all the privations and triumphs. Thanks for a terrific read." Peter Lovesey, MWA Grand Master, CWA Diamond Dagger winner Mat Coward (reviewing in The Morning Star): "One of current fiction's most striking and exhilarating characters returns for a second outing... Amid the horrors of Lady Bag's new adventures, and inextricable from them, is some gaspingly funny comedy. Cody has command not only of comic dialogue but, which is much harder to pull off, a kind of verbal rendering of visual humour, as she choreographs her characters across the pages with perfect timing. About Lady Bag "...made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up for a whole novel... Lady Bag is ... perfectly realized..." Sara Paretsky, MWA Grand Master, CWA Diamond Dagger winner- Shop: buecher

Civil War Experiences of a German Emigrant: Company D, 12th Michigan Regiment , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 144min
In this stirring memoir, Joseph Ruff recounts his experiences during the first year of his four years of service in the Union Army, Company D of the 12th Michigan Regiment. It was, as he describes, “[B]y far the most severe year of our service...a year of battles, severe marches, constant duties, privations, illness, and death.”Beginning as a green new recruit with no fanfare, no uniform, and only the bare necessities, Joseph became a seasoned soldier, at times living by his wits and off the land. Joseph recounts, in harrowing detail, his confrontations with the enemy and numerous narrow escapes. There was more than one occasion when Joseph felt that divine providence had not only saved him personally, but had guided the war, as well. One of the most important battles of the war, the Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6 of that first year. Joseph writes his harrowing account of the experience, beginning with a skirmish on the night of April 5, when he and 200 soldiers undertook a scouting expedition, little knowing that a force of 42,000 Confederate men was lying in wait prepared to attack next day.Fortunately, Joseph and his squad saw an outlying sentry, saving them from blundering into the entire enemy camp. Even so, they barely escaped through a barrage of bullets and returned to camp, carrying their wounded. Thus, they were able to deliver a warning to the Union camp, so timely it is thought to have affected the course of the war. Had the Union Army been caught unawares and defeated at Shiloh, it could have handed the Confederacy a victory. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Ellis.
