By Means of the Sun is a photography project that includes analogue and digital images, taken or simply selected by Andrea Ferrari, made for scientific or creative purposes, produced by a camera or direct chemical modification of the film, objectively clear or almost abstract, and even drawings; drawings that, through the mediation of the lens, themselves turn into photographs. This book deftly reflects the current state of photography, one that is post-digital and postmodern, omnivorous and protean. Beginning with the work of William Henry Fox Talbot to whom this project is dedicated, starting with its title, Ferrari's wide-ranging sequence of images touches on themes as vast as the beginnings of photography and the origin of the world, drawing as a link between image and writing, and the egg as an archetypal form.

Krantik is cynical, jaded, and utterly bored. He's also a paranoid hypochondriac. As an Indian working in Rome, he drifts in and out of a dead-end relationship with the assistance of several intoxicants and a short-lived love affair. His personal revelations and delusions of grandeur are exquisitely funny and devastatingly poignant, sometimes descending into barbaric crudeness exposing the hollowness of social mores and the anxieties of a rootless generation. The obsessive solipsism, the protean cultural associations, and the wry, unexpected observations scattered through the audiobook capture the confused apathy of the millennials. This is a clever, bizarre tour de force, part noir, part philosophy, and filled with the entirely unexpected. Jack Kerouac meets James Joyce meets Harold and Kumar meets Jonathan Lethem in this wildly inventive portrait of a generation. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ramiz Monsef. Eros dwells within us, shaping the course of our lives as it seeks its own destiny; constantly shifting the balance of power between the sexes as men & women mature and age. And so the nature of Eros is explored in The Dragonfly; a surreal poetic journey through one woman's life, in which fantasy and the vivid world of her imagination, takes a parallel course with reality. Weaving its way through a series of episodic tales, (from Medieval England to Ming Dynasty China), the Dragonfly accompanies GEORGINA; a beautiful, intelligent and artistic woman, whilst she discovers her own protean erotic ego as it evolves and changes over the course of her extraordinary life.At times beautiful and spiritual, at times shocking and disturbing, The Dragonfly is always honest in its gaze into the mirror of the human condition.Explicit Language Warning: you must be 18 years or older to purchase this program. 1968. The Vietnam War was raging. President Lyndon Johnson, facing a challenge in his own Democratic Party from the maverick antiwar candidate Eugene McCarthy, announced that he would not seek a second term. In April, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and riots broke out in inner cities throughout America. Bobby Kennedy was killed after winning the California primary in June. In August, Republicans met in Miami, picking the little-loved Richard Nixon as their candidate, while in September, Democrats in Chicago backed the ineffectual vice president, Hubert Humphrey. TVs across the country showed antiwar protesters filling the streets of Chicago and the police running amok, beating and arresting demonstrators and delegates alike. In Miami and the Siege of Chicago, Norman Mailer, America's most protean and provocative writer, brings a novelist's eye to bear on the events of 1968, a decisive year in modern American politics, from which today's bitterly divided country arose. ungekürzt. Fear is ubiquitous but slippery. It has been defined as a purely biological reality, derided as an excuse for cowardice, attacked as a force for social control, and even denigrated as an unnatural condition that has no place in the disenchanted world of enlightened modernity. In these times of institutionalized insecurity and global terror, Facing Fear sheds light on the meaning, diversity, and dynamism of fear in multiple world-historical contexts, and demonstrates how fear universally binds us to particular presents but also to a broad spectrum of memories, stories, and states in the past. From the 18th-century Peruvian highlands and the California borderlands to the urban cityscapes of contemporary Russia and India, this book collectively explores the wide range of causes, experiences, and explanations of this protean emotion. The volume contributes to the thriving literature on the history of emotions and destabilizes narratives that have often understood fear in very specific linguistic, cultural, and geographical settings. Rather, by using a comparative, multidisciplinary framework, the book situates fear in more global terms, breaks new ground in the historical and cultural analysis of emotions, and sets out a new agenda for further research. ungekürzt. In this intimate dual memoir, Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter, Ann, offer distinct perspectives as a 50-something and a 20-something, each on a quest to redefine herself and to rediscover each other. Between 1998 and 2000, Sue and Ann travel throughout Greece and France. Sue, coming to grips with aging, caught in a creative vacuum, longing to reconnect with her grown daughter, struggles to enlarge a vision of swarming bees into a novel. Ann, just graduated from college, heartbroken and benumbed by the classic question about what to do with her life, grapples with a painful depression. As this modern-day Demeter and Persephone chronicle the richly symbolic and personal meaning of an array of inspiring figures and sites, they also each give voice to that most protean of connections: the bond of mother and daughter. A wise and involving book about feminine thresholds, spiritual growth, and renewal, Traveling with Pomegranates is both a revealing self-portrait by a beloved author and her daughter, a writer in the making, and a momentous story that will resonate with women everywhere. ungekürzt.
