In the spirit of Station Eleven and The Age of Miracles, this exciting literary debut novel imagines the consequences when four ordinary individuals are granted a chance to continue their lives in genetically perfect versions of their former bodies. Would you live your life differently if you were given a second chance? Hannah, David, Connie, and Linda - four terminally ill patients - have been selected for the SUBlife pilot program, which will grant them brand-new, genetically perfect bodies that are exact copies of their former selves - without a single imperfection. Blemishes, scars, freckles, and wrinkles have all disappeared; their fingerprints are different; their vision is impeccable; and, most importantly, their illnesses have been cured. But the fresh start they've been given is anything but perfect. Without their old bodies, their new physical identities have been lost. Hannah, an artistic prodigy, has to relearn how to hold a brush; David, a congressman, grapples with his old habits; Connie, an actress whose stunning looks are restored after a protracted illness, tries to navigate an industry obsessed with physical beauty; and Linda, who spent eight years paralyzed after a car accident, now struggles to reconnect with a family that seems to have built a new life without her. As all try to reenter their previous lives and relationships, they are faced with the question: How much of your identity rests not just in your mind but in your heart, your body? ungekürzt. In 1816, Mordecai Lewis, a veteran of Andrew Jackson's Indian campaigns and battles against the British, moves his family into the Western Tennessee canebrakes. But Mordecai, a born wanderer, is not satisfied with farming, and with his sons, Michael and Andrew, and some other backwoodsmen, he leads a foray into Spanish-held Texas to hunt wild horses and return the mustang herd to sell in Tennessee. Crossing the Sabine River, Mordecai's party encounters a Spanish patrol determined to repel all American invaders. After a bloody skirmish leaves their father dead, Michael and Andrew find their way back to their Tennessee farm. Five years later, after the Spanish government in Mexico City has agreed to permit 300 American families to settle in Texas, the Lewis brothers have their opportunity to reenter Texas. They ride to the frontier town of Natchitoches, Louisiana, where Michael falls in love with Marie Villaret, daughter of a wealthy French landowner, then cross the Sabine to find Stephen F. Austin, a Missouri entrepreneur in charge of the new American colony. But the Lewises are considered interlopers and horse thieves and are dogged by a patrol led by the same ruthless Spanish offer who killed their father five years before. Sons of Texas is the first volume in a trilogy that follows the lives and adventures of the Lewis family through the era of the Alamo and Texas Independence under Sam Houston. A pair of ferocious forest fires rages out of control, threatening to destroy two American national parks and incinerate thousands of homes and park buildings. As the desperate battle to squelch the global warming-induced fires before they "blow up" reaches a fever-pitch, a mysterious string of violent airborne accidents among the air tanker fleet produces a mounting body count. The air tankers - the old aircraft used by pilots to bomb the fires with fire retardant slurry - have been literally falling apart in midair. Clearly not designed for such punishing high-stakes flying, the flying museum pieces should have been grounded years ago.Veteran pilot Clark Maxwell thought his fire bombing days were well behind him. But when Jerry Stein, Maxwell's friend and air tanker fleet-owner, calls at the height of the fire season to beg him to reenter the war, he doesn't hesitate. As the wildfires spread, whipped by massive winds and the federal forces arrayed against the fires reach their limits, hysteria and potential evacuation threatens the local population. In the middle of this crisis, Clark Maxwell becomes convinced that a sinister cover-up is behind the rash of horrific air disasters. As he races to unravel a very real mystery and prevent a natural disaster of massive proportions, Maxwell's probe reaches the upper levels of government agencies charged with mounting the aerial fire fighting effort - a move that for wholly unexpected reasons just may cost him his life. ungekürzt. The clash of armies in the American Civil War left hundreds of thousands of men dead, wounded, or permanently damaged. Skirmishes and battles could result in casualty numbers as low as one or two and as high as 10s of thousands. The carnage of the battlefield left a lasting impression on those who experienced or viewed it, but in most cases the armies quickly moved on to meet again at another time and place. When the dust settled and the living armies moved on, what happened to the dead left behind?Unlike battle narratives, The Aftermath of Battle: The Burial of the Civil War Dead picks up the story as the battle ends. The burial of the dead was an overwhelming experience for the armies or communities forced to clean up after the destruction of battle. In the short-term action, bodies were hastily buried to avoid the stench and the horrific health concerns of massive death; in the long-term, families struggled to reclaim loved ones and properly reenter them in established cemeteries.Visitors to a battlefield often wonder what happened to the dead once the battle was over. In this easy-to-listen overview that will complement any Civil War library, author Meg Groeling provides a look at the aftermath of battle and the process of burying the Civil War dead. The Aftermath of Battle is part of the Emerging Civil War Series offering compelling, easy-to-listen overviews of some of the Civil War’s most important stories. ungekürzt. 15 March 1973 In an attempt to finally capture the infamous serial killer known as “The Bedtime Butcher” on a lead given by a woman who claimed to have escaped her demise, the FBI had but little success at his apprehension. After arriving at the killer's supposed location, the FBI and many local officers rushed to surround the home located in the backwoods of Dryfork, West Virginia. What the authorities found will now remain in their nightmares for the rest of their lives. The terror discovered on the site where “The Bedtime Butcher” harbored his victims brought officers to their knees, a horrid stench induced vomiting amongst a few, prolonging the investigation until authorities could regain their balance to reenter the home and face the leftovers from the malicious and most gruesome happenings that had gone on in the residence. Officials are said to have recovered 15 bodies collectively, but that number isn’t certain due to the several body parts strung around the interior of the home, including in the refrigerator/freezer, microwave, oven, dresser drawers, closets, and in the bed of The Butcher. The exact number of victims will not be known until coroners give certainty regarding the identity of the individuals, matching the body parts to the victims, and other tests are done. The police have discovered what seems to be a diary of The Butcher and it is expected to give clues regarding the investigation. Officers are in search of the killer as of now and are currently searching the woodlands surrounding the property. The killer is thought to be a Mr. Michael Marvin Lewis and is considered extremely armed and dangerous. If you know this man or have seen this man do not approach him, contact authorities immediately. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Marcus Price.
