Portrait of Sebastian Khan , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 577min
A literary comedy about the complicated romantic life of a Muslim American art history student at UC Berkeley.Sebastian Khan is 380 days away from the end of college. An art history major with a fondness for the pre-Raphaelites and a dislike of long-term commitments (romantic and otherwise), Sebastian starts dating Fatima, who's determined to transition smoothly from campus life to a stable white-collar professional career.Sebastian's membership in Model United Nations, though, takes him to colleges across North America, foisting upon him all manner of temptations and testing his commitment to Fatima and his readiness for adulthood. Part satire of college life circa 2011 and part serious exploration of art's fundamental unreality, Portrait of Sebastian Khan is a humorous coming-of-age novel about a charismatic but emotional stunted Muslim American Don Draper who wins as many hearts as he breaks. ungekürzt. Being There , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 171min
Audie Award Nominee, Best Solo Narration, 2013 Jerzy Kosinski’s clever parable of a naive man thrust into the modern world is more pointed now than ever. Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man, The Graduate), perhaps best known for his portrayals of vulnerable characters and antiheroes, gives an understated and exemplary performance of this satiric look at the unreality of American media culture. Chance, the enigmatic gardener, becomes Chauncey Gardiner after getting hit by a limo belonging to a Wall Street tycoon. The whirlwind that follows brings Chance to his new status of political policy advisor and possible vice presidential candidate. His garden-variety political responses, inspired by television, become heralded as visionary, and he is soon a media icon due to his unknown background and vague, yet appealing, conversational nature. Being There was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film, starring Peter Sellers as Chance, in 1979. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dustin Hoffman. Chronic Anxiety Unreality Sensations and Other Odd Symptoms: The Bizarre Manifestations of Panic and Disordered Anxiousness , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 52min
Beginning in my teen years, I experienced intermittent panic attacks. Previous to this, I suffered prolonged episodes of free-floating anxiety (generalized worry and anxiousness). During my twenties, I found coping skills for my anxiety that were mostly self-taught, although I had seen mental health counselors for short periods of time in my late teens. These sessions were scheduled by my parents; during times I seemed to be lacking the ability to cope as I should, following major events, such as relocating to new schools. This was in the late 1970s and some anxiety therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), were not as well-developed as they are now. In the case of anxiety disorders, knowledge truly is power and gaining an education regarding symptom-manifestations, can lend toward better results for managing these symptoms, as proper treatment is also being administered. This was key to my own success with gaining coping skills for chronic anxiety symptoms and that I hope to convey through the chapters of this audiobook. This audiobook is not intended to be an extensive manual but is intended to contain information most often sought by laypersons on the subject. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: James M. When the body of supermodel Harmony Phelps turns up in Morgantown, WV, Detective Mark Faulkner and Assistant Medical Examiner Renee Forst are sent on a downward spiral of unreality. A year before the body's appearance, Kat Forst sees a vision of her own death. Now, the dream that haunts her with every sleep both frightens and intrigues her. Each night, she enters a bathroom; each night, three men test her resolve; each night, Kat finds herself drawn closer to the man decorated with swirling, glittering patterns of coral stone. Drugged and abducted by the Mastichoria of Chios, controllers of a mythical spice, Kat will confront the truth of her vision, the reality of her bloody fate. And the man within her dreams is real: Mikolas, the seducer. She tries to fight him, but his will is stronger; his desire is stronger. To Kat, the magic within her blood is a curse. To Mikolas, her blood means salvation. Across the daunting oceans, Mark and Renee pursue Kat. Time and destiny are against them. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pamela Lorence. The Anatomy of a Moment: Thirty-Five Minutes in History and Imagination , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 907min
In February 1981, just as Spain was finally leaving Franco's dictatorship and during the first democratic vote in parliament for a new prime minister - Colonel Tejero and a band of right-wing soldiers burst into the Spanish parliament and began firing shots. Only three members of Congress defied the incursion and did not dive for cover: Adolfo Suarez, the then-outgoing prime minister, who had steered the country away from the Franco era; Guttierez Mellado, a conservative general who had loyally served democracy; and Santiago Carillo, the head of the Communist Party, which had just been legalized. In The Anatomy of a Moment, Cercas examines a key moment in Spanish history, just as he did so successfully in his Spanish Civil War novel, Soldiers of Salamis. This is the only coup ever to have been caught on film as it was happening, which, as Cercas says, "guaranteed both its reality and its unreality". Every February a few seconds of the video are shown again and Spaniards congratulate themselves for standing up for democracy, but Cercas says that things were very quiet that afternoon and evening while all over Spain people stayed inside waiting for the coup to be defeated ...or to triumph. ungekürzt. Walking to Hollywood , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 669min
One of the most remarkably inventive voices of his generation, author Will Self delivers a new and stunning work of fiction. In Walking to Hollywood, a British writer named Will Self goes on a quest through LA freeways and eroding English cliffs, skewering celebrity as he attempts to solve a crime: who killed the movies. When Will reconnects with his childhood friend, the world suddenly seems disproportionate. Sherman Oaks, scarcely three feet tall at 45, and his ironically sized sculptures - replicas of his body varying from the gargantuan to the miniscule - spark in Will a flurry of obsessive-compulsive thoughts and a nagging desire to experience the world by foot. Ignoring his therapist and nemesis Zack Busner, Self travels to Hollywood on a mission to discover who - or what - killed the movies. Convinced that everyone from his agent to his friends and bums on the street are portrayed by famous actors, Self goes undercover into the dangerous world of celebrity culture. He circumambulates the metropolitan area in hallucinating and wild episodes, eventually arriving on the English cliffs of East Yorkshire, where he comes face to face with one of Jonathan Swift's immortal Struldbruggs. A satirical novel of otherworldly proportion and literary brilliance, Walking to Hollywood is a fantastical and unforgettable trip through the unreality of our culture. ungekürzt. Language: English. Infinity Net: The Autobiography of Yayoi Kusama (eBook, ePUB)
I am deeply terrified by the obsessions crawling over my body, whether they come from within me or from outside. I fluctuate between feelings of reality and unreality. I, myself, delight in my obsessions.'Yayoi Kusama is one of the most significant contemporary artists at work today. This engaging autobiography tells the story of her life and extraordinary career in her own words, revealing her as a fascinating figure and maverick artist who channels her obsessive neuroses into an art that transcends cultural barriers. Kusama describes the decade she spent in New York, first as a poverty stricken artist and later as the doyenne of an alternative counter-cultural scene. She provides a frank and touching account of her relationships with key art-world figures, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Donald Judd and the reclusive Joseph Cornell, with whom Kusama forged a close bond. In candid terms she describes her childhood and the first appearance of the obsessive visions that have haunted her throughout her life. Returning to Japan in the early 1970s, Kusama checked herself into a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo where she resides to the present day, emerging to dedicate herself with seemingly endless vigour to her art and her writing. This remarkable autobiography provides a powerful insight into a unique artistic mind, haunted by fears and phobias yet determined to maintain her position at the forefront of the artistic avant-garde. In addition to her artwork, Yayoi Kusama is the author of numerous volumes of poetry and fiction, including The Hustler's Grotto of Christopher Street, Manhattan Suicide Addict and Violet Obsession.- Shop: buecher
