Dieser Chardonnay ohne Holzkontakt liefert ein eindrucksvolles Weißweinerlebnis, das den Vergleich mit burgundischen Chardonnays keinesfalls fürchten muss. Lebendig und fruchtig, pur und mineralisch überzeugt dieser vielseitige und vielschichtige Weißwein. Im Bukett offenbart er Aromen von frischen Pfirsichen und Honigmelone, am Gaumen ist er ausgewogen und reizvoll mit einem Hauch von tropischen Früchten. Bei dieser Frische und Konzentration ist dieser Wein nahezu einmalig in Südafrika – vor allem im Hinblick auf den Preis kann man kaum mehr Chardonnay erwarten. Das wunderschöne Warwick Estate liegt im Herzen der legendären Weinbauregion Stellenbosch am Fuße des Simonsberges. Hier wurde es im Jahr 1964 von Stan und Norma Ratcliffe auf historischem Boden neu angelegt. Norma bewies schnell, dass ihre Weine zu den besten des Landes zählen und schaffte es als erste Frau in die südafrikanische Weinmachergilde »Cape Winemakers Guild« aufgenommen zu werden. Bis 2017 führte ihr Sohn Mike den Familienbetrieb und das Estate sogar an die Spitze der »Top 100 Wineries« (Wine & Spirits Magazine) weltweit. An den Südhängen des traditionsreichen Anwesens, die durch die zahlreichen Flüsse der Umgebung ideal mit Feuchtigkeit versorgt werden, reift das Rebgut unter idealen Bedingungen für strahlende Weine voller Kraft und Eleganz, wie der First Lady Chardonnay.

Alle Weine stammen von hochgelegenen Kleinst-Parzellen, die Les Manyes-Reben stehen übrigens auf Ton und Kalkstein-Böden und unterscheiden auch deshalb von anderen Garnacha aus dem Priorat. Während der gesamten Vegetationsphase greift Dominik Huber, ein Weinmacher mit Herz und Seele, so wenig in den Weinberg ein, wie es nur irgend geht. Strikte Handlese in 10-Kilo-Boxen, manuelle Auslese der besten Trauben, Gravitationspresse, schonende Vinifizierung und Ausbau im Fass sind hier selbstverständlich. So entstehen einige der schönsten Priorats überhaupt, nur vergleichbar mit großen Burgundern und den Einzellagenweinen von Mas Martinet. Der 2014er Jahrgang wurde vom Robert Parker Wine Advocate mit 98 Punkten bedacht: "The 2014 Les Manyes was bottled a little earlier, in June 2016. In many wineries in Priorat, 2013 is clearly better than 2014, but it's not that clear in the case here, and you have to take it wine by wine. In the case of this Les Manyes, I think 2014 was the big surprise, with a combination of depth, perfume, subtleness and power difficult to achieve. The clay and chalky soils provide for an extraordinary texture of tannins, a lot less coarse than those from slate soils. It distills all the Mediterranean herbs and flowers, the essence of ripe red cherries and wild strawberries with some chalky minerality in a nose and palate that is close to perfection.
