Vivaldi was not the only composer to write for the talented girls and women of the Ospedale della Pieta, the convent school in Venice which was apparently full of young musicians trained in vocal and instrumental virtuosity sufficient to tackle virtuoso sonatas and concertos. Nicola Porpora was born in Naples, and is known as a distinguished alumnus of the more operatically inclined Neapolitan school of composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti and Pergolesi.Porpora worked off and on in Venice, and in 1742 became chorus master at the Ospedale della Pieta, and then from 1744 to 1747 worked in the same role at the Ospedale dei Poveri Derelitti run by the parish of S. Giovanni e Paolo. Most of the works on this CD - some of them recorded for the first time - date from this latter period. The choir was apparently in a parlous state when Porpora took it over, but he turned things around within fairly short order through rigorous daily rehearsals: as Porpora himself wrote on 4 January 1745, "To form a good choir calls for many things, the most important of which I shall describe here. [...] resonant voices possessed by girls who are determined, ready to work hard, and skilled as instrumentalists."The works here are multi-movement settings of psalms and other sacred texts, alternating arias and choruses, solo and ripieno texts, mostly lively in character except where pathos is called for in penitential texts. It makes a fine complement to the recent disc of secular cantatas on Brilliant Classics (BC94311) and is performed with native style by a historically ensemble based in Vicenza, just 60km from La Serenissma itself. The booklet contains a scholarly essay and the full sung texts are available for download at www.brilliantclassics.com.Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) was an important composer, musician and teacher of Baroque Europe. He held several important posts, notably in Dresden, London (where he was Handel's rival) and Venice. He was the teacher of the famous castrato Farinelli and Joseph Haydn. In Venice Porpora was teacher and chorus master at the Ospedale delle Pieta, a charitable institution for orphans and abandoned girls, where music was an important part of the children's education. On this disc are presented a selection of sacred works written for the female choirs of the Ospedale: highly attractive works, full of drama, expressive effects and virtuoso roles for both vocalists and instrumentalists.Excellent performances by the Coro Femminile Harmonia and the Ensemble Barocca e Musicali Affetti, conducted by Michele Perugi.A fascinating document of musical life in Baroque Venice, containing several first recordings!

In The Nutcracker Mood It's over a half century since the immortal Glenn Miller disappeared just before Christmas on December 15, 1944. His Orchestra, in the too-short run under his personal leadership, had officially recorded only one Christmas song ("Jingle Bells", October 20, 1941). Dedicated fans around the world are certain that, had he lived through World War II, he would have recorded a complete album of the best-loved music of the holiday season. This recording is the third produced by this outstanding group of professional musicians, all contributing to the continuation of the Glenn Miller tradition and the joy of the music heard during the Christmas season year after year, all around the world. Once again...the "sound" and the "swing" of the Glenn Miller sound of the Forties...the songs and holiday joys of Christmas...another celebration by dedicated alumni of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The first recording, "In The Christmas Mood", was released in 1991. It was so successful that a second recording, "In The Christmas Mood II,' was produced and later released in 1993. By the close of the Christmas season of 1996, "In The Christmas Mood," received a Platinum Record Award (sales exceeded 1,000,000 units) and "In The Christmas Mood II," received a Gold Record Award (sales exceeded 500,000 units). For the first recording, a list of desirable players was compiled. There were a few requisites -- musicians had to be working currently, only alumni of the Glenn Miller Orchestra would be recruited, each individual had to have recognized and outstanding talent, each veteran had to be able to take a leave-of-absence from his current "gig", and, of course, be available to come to New York City to record. The reaction from each and every alumnus called was immediate, "Of course! Count me in. When? Where?" So they came from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Michigan, Florida, Rochester, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Sydney, Australia to join the players already in New York City. Almost all of the musicians performing on all three of these recordings, are the same. The only differences are the pianist for the first recording, and trombonist, Larry O'Brien, the then leader of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, was unable to make the second recording due to being on tour. Larry is noticeably back on this recording as evidenced by his beautiful trombone solo on Toyland. The average age of this band is about 50. The length of time each player performed with the Glenn Miller Orchestra ranges from as little as 6 months to well over 10 years. The cumulative experience of this band recreating the authentic Miller "sound" is well over 100 years! What is their motivation? Dedication? Commitment? Familiarity? Feeling? Lasting enthusiasm? Wish fulfillment? A reunion of great music with great musicians who are all friends? A celebration of the past and present? The answer is definitely "all of the above!". The quality of the music and musicianship on these recordings speaks for itself! Look at the repertoire here -- Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite plus many more Christmas standards, some of which were around when Glenn was still alive and other more recent compositions he might have recorded had he not been lost. IN THE NUTCRACKER MOOD -- Over 40 minutes of musical memories, of good cheer, of the most enduring "sound' of the Swing Era Big Bands arranged and performed by dedicated alumni of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. This is music that will live forever. Orchestral and vocal magnificence! Gratification! Enjoy! In some ways this is the perfect debut album, sparkling with wit, invention and some truly memorable pop tunes. -Rock and Reel After releasing an EP in 2006, indie pop tunesmith Ari Shine has issued his debut full-length, the quite catchy A Force of One. Killer opening track "Cooler Than Me" channels early Elvis Costello through 21st century indie rock. The major influence of Costello permeates the whole record, in fact, although to varying degrees. "She Wants It (More Than Me)", another great cut, has a more straightforward rock 'n' roll appeal, while still retaining Shine's indefatigable pop instincts. "Flirtation Device" is radio-friendly AAA and wouldn't be out of place on a Semisonic album. The sneering "Party People", meanwhile, possesses the same dark disco appeal as the latest Of Montreal. The waltz-time title track reminds us that Elvis is king in Ari Shine's world. Fortunately, the dude's got the chops to pull it off. As his press material emphasizes, Ari won the John Lennon songwriting contest. He's a good singer, too, delivering with skill and just enough of a bitter attitude to sell his songs of relationships gone wrong. On A Force of One, Ari Shine is a force to be reckoned with. -Popmatters Musical trends come and go, but some things never go completely out of style, and good power pop is one of them. Cheap Trick will probably never again achieve anything close to the chart positions they enjoyed in the late '70s, and Fastball will probably never come close to those heights of popularity at all -- but Cheap Trick will keep selling out venues as long as they keep touring, and you'll keep hearing Fastball on the radio. If those names make the rock lobe of your brain tingle, then you'll want to run to your computer and immediately order a copy of Ari Shine's A Force of One. Like the Rocket Summer, Shine plays all the instruments himself and sings almost all the parts, but he never falls prey to the one-man band sickness -- that low-grade fever that afflicts somebody like Prince when no one is around to tell him he's being a dork, and that shuts down the part of his brain that can tell the difference between brilliance and self-indulgence. Shine is all about tight song structures, sharply observed lyrics, and focused hooks -- and if his hooks don't bite quite as deeply as those of some of his colleagues, his songs are still plenty of good fun. Even if you don't walk away from A Force of One singing any of the choruses obsessively, you'll have a great time listening to the widgety '70s synthesizer on 'Beat U,' the wry humor of 'She Wants It (More Than Me),' and the cheerfully cheesy house-ska of 'Party People.' Definitely worth a listen. Rick Anderson - All Music Guide Shine is a confessed Sparks fanatic so it makes sense that his album was produced by early Sparks alumnus, Earle Mankey. Indeed, there is some of that smart prog-pop here but he's a little earthier than art-pop, sounding occasionally like Matthew Sweet or Big Star. Tom Harrison - The Province Opening the proceedings is three tracks from Los Angeles-based Ari Shine, two of which from his upcoming debut 'Force of One' out in July. Opener 'Cooler Than Me' is reminiscent of US pop/punk band Simple Plan and 'Flirtation Device' seems to have influences deeply implanted in 1980's electro-synth. Shine is an artist who seems to have an impressive ability to create addictive pop hooks, don't be surprised to hear more from him later in the year. -Subba-Cultcha UK Elsewhere, LA-based newcomer ARI SHINE demonstrates that Bongo Beat's antenna remains reliable where new signings are concerned. Shine contributes three tunes to this sampler and the chewy, riffsmart arrogance and sunshine combination of songs such as 'Crank It Out' and the lippy 'Cooler Than Me' prove to be instantly likeable whacks to the gut for fans of early Costello and the Knack/ Raspberries school of gritty, radio-friendly guitar pop. Shine has been laying down his sussed choons with legendary LA producer Earle Mankey (Sparks, Dickies, millions more) and even when synths and beatboxes accompany the chugging guitars - as on the wicked 'Flirtation Device' - he's onto a winner. Remember his name. -Whisperin' and Hollerin.
