I Married a Communist: Nathan Zuckerman, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 686min
Winner of the 1999 Ambassador Book Award of the English-Speaking Union in Fiction Iron Rinn, born Ira Ringold, is a Newark roughneck, a radio actor, an idealistic Communist, and an educated ditchdigger turned popular performer. A six-foot, six-inch Abe Lincoln lookalike, he emerges from serving in World War II passionately committed to making the world a better place and instead winds up blacklisted, unemployable, and ruined by a brutal personal secret from which he is perpetually in flight. His life is in ruins. On his way to political catastrophe, he marries the nation's reigning radio actress and beloved silent film star, Eve Frame (born Chava Fromkin). Their marriage evolves from glamorous, romantic idyll to a disparaging soap opera of tears and treachery when Eve's dramatic revelation to gossip columnist Bryden Grant of her husband's life of espionage with the Soviet Union soon twists the couple's private drama into a national scandal. I Married a Communist is an American tragedy as only Philip Roth can conceive...fierce and comical, eloquently rendered, and definitely accurate. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ron Silver. Andromeda Nebula , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 656min
Ivan Yefremov (1908-1972) was a Soviet writer and paleontologist. In addition to introducing a new paleontological field taphonomy - the study of fossilization patterns - Yefremov has written a series of novels and short stories, including science fiction, historic fiction, adventure, and drama. Yefremov is frequently ridiculed for his enthusiasm and faith in the viability of a communist society, as described in his best known science-fiction novel Andromeda Nebula. What is frequently overlooked is Yefremov's tremendous knowledge of history and profound understanding of psychology. His future society, while highly evolved, is not impervious to mistakes. His future humanity, having learned and discovered much, is not pausing to rest on its laurels - it continues to learn and explore. It is not widely known that his more mature works such as Hour of the Bull and Razor's Edge had the writer blacklisted by the Soviet government, as Yefremov's interpretation of a fair and balanced society deviated sharply from the government propaganda of the time. To Yefremov's fans, he is known for his thorough scientific analysis, study of art and history, emphasis on physical and intellectual balance, and strong female characters. ungekürzt. Garbo Laughs , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 701min
A Globe and Mail Notable Book of the Year A Quill & Quire Top Five Canadian Fiction Book of the Year A Maclean's Top Ten Book of the Year Elizabeth Hay's runaway national best seller is a funny, sad-eyed, deliciously entertaining novel about a woman caught in a tug of war between real life and the films of the past. Inflamed by the movies she was deprived of as a child, Harriet Browning forms a Friday-night movie club with three companions-of-the-screen: a boy who loves Frank Sinatra, a girl with Bette Davis eyes, and an earthy sidekick named after Dinah Shore. Into this idiosyncratic world, in time with the devastating ice storm of 1998, come two refugees from Hollywood: Harriet's Aunt Leah, the jaded widow of a screenwriter blacklisted in the 1950s, and her sardonic, often overbearing stepson, Jack. They bring harsh reality and illuminate the pull of family and friendship, the sting of infidelity and revenge, the shock of illness and sudden loss. Poignant, brilliant, and delightfully droll, Garbo Laughs reveals how the dramas of everyday life are sometimes the most astonishing of all. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Elizabeth Hay. Leonard Bernstein: The Political Life of an American Musician , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 531min
From his dazzling conducting debut in 1943 until his death in 1990, Leonard Bernstein's star blazed brilliantly. In this fresh and revealing biography of Bernstein's political life, Barry Seldes examines Bernstein's career against the backdrop of cold war America - blacklisting by the State Department in 1950, voluntary exile from the New York Philharmonic in 1951 for fear that he might be blacklisted, signing a humiliating affidavit to regain his passport - and the factors that by the mid-1950s allowed his triumphant return to the New York Philharmonic. Seldes for the first time links Bernstein's great concert-hall and musical-theatrical achievements and his real and perceived artistic setbacks to his involvment with progressive political causes. Making extensive use of previously untapped FBI files as well as overlooked materials in the Library of Congress' Bernstein archive, Seldes illuminates the ways in which Bernstein's career intersected with the 20th century's most momentous events. This broadly accessible and impressively documented account of the celebrity-maestro's life deepens our understanding of an entire era as it reveals important and often ignored intersections of American culture and political power. This book is published by University of California Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dick Hill. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/redw/000043/bk_redw_000043_sample.mp3. M. Stanton Evans (eBook, ePUB)
M. Stanton Evans (d. 2015) was one of the unsung heroes and key figures of the modern conservative movement, offering a model to be remembered and emulated in both thought and deed. A person of extraordinary breadth, he combined the roles of journalist, first-rank thinker, and political action, often at the center of crucial events for the conservative movement from the mid-1950s to his last decade in the 2010s. He was the principal author of the Sharon Statement, the founding document of Young Americans for Freedom. Evans was also a mentor to an entire generation of conservative writers and journalists, including Ann Coulter, John Fund, Martin Morse Wooster, Tim Carney, Richard Miniter, William McGurn, and this author. Evans was libertarian in economics and policy, traditionalist in moral and social matters, respectful of religion, and resolutely anti-Communist. Over the years he wrote a number of elegant articles and one book (The Theme is Freedom) that reconciled many of the strains that often appear between these differing schools of conservative thought. He also wrote a controversial defense of Joseph McCarthy (Blacklisted by History), which is one of many examples of his fearlessness in contesting the conventional wisdom. Beyond his professional profile, Stan was also known for his ironic dry wit, which only came out in person, as well as his personal modesty and kindliness, and fondness for fast-food, sports, and classic rock and roll music trivia. He was "the conservative for the common man.”- Shop: buecher
