In a refreshing departure from today's celebrity worship cultivated by reality television, tabloid photos, and celebrity twittering, award-winning novelist W.D. Wetherell's On Admiration celebrates the heroes and heroines who have peopled his life from his earliest years. Writers, singers, presidents, athletes, cartoonists, artists, activists, and many more are examined here- from Henry David Thoreau to Willa Cather to Albert Camus to Dwight D. Eisenhower to Winston Churchill to Beverly Sills - in this humorous, insightful memoir that speaks powerfully about the state of fame, celebrity culture, and honest admiration.Wetherell skillfully reminds us of the magic and mystery that comes with slow discovery - of that first awareness of those figures who awoke something within us, that inspired us as children, teenagers, and adults - forever altering the landscape of ourselves. From visiting Herman Melville's study where Melville wrote Moby Dick to being a Rangers fan living in NYC - Wetherell examines the meaning of the American cultural landscape - and its remnants - in a candid and personal memoir like no other before him. With this lively and exacting series of pop culture essays, Wetherell joins the ranks of David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Franzen, and Chuck Klosterman. ungekürzt. Language: English. Since 1968, Garry Trudeau (b. 1948) has brought his brand of political satire to bear on public figures, movie stars, heads of state, and even on himself. Trudeau has also advocated for artists' rights and challenged industry norms while keeping a decidedly low profile. In Garry Trudeau: Doonesbury and the Aesthetics of Satire, Kerry D. Soper traces the contribution of this groundbreaking artist. Trudeau is arguably the premier American political and social satirist of the last forty years. Amazingly, he achieved this on the comics page, rather than the editorial page. By defying convention, Trudeau has established a hybrid form of popular satire that capitalizes on the narrative continuity and broad reach of the comic strip form, while operating according to the rules of combative political commentary. Garry Trudeau is divided into chapters that offer a history of Doonesbury; an analysis of Trudeau's effective satiric methods; a discussion of the methods whereby he challenged the business practices of the comic strip industry; an examination of the aesthetics of Doonesbury; and a consideration of Trudeau's significance as a social chronicler through an analysis of his character construction, narrative practices, and documentation of the American zeitgeist. Garry Trudeau is a thorough assessment of one of America's most popular and controversial cartoonists. The book is published by University Press of Mississippi. ungekürzt. Language: English. It is more than just the biggest corporate bankruptcy in U.S. history. The collapse of Enron is a tale of greed, hubris, corporate dishonesty, loss of security, and shaken trust in the American economic system. More importantly, Enron's collapse marks the end of one era, and the start of a new one. The Marketplace Special Report: Blind Trust goes beyond the avalanche of Enron-related headlines. Marketplace host David Brancaccio leads a cast of analysts, reporters, commentators, opinion-leaders (including economist Paul Krugman and former SEC Chairman Arthur Leavitt) - even actors and cartoonists - toward a "final draft" version of the Enron story and the six important lessons to be learned:The Enron story is bigger than a series of passing scandals: it's a watershed event.Enron was caused by corporate, and even cultural, hubris.Enron represents a costly betrayal of trust - one with the potential to damage the American economic system.Enron reveals the precarious state of what Americans understand about economics. Enron isn't the end of the 'new economy': in a bigger sense, it's just the start of it.Enron is the great warning shot for a new economic era. This special report isn't about "who-did-what-to-whom," nor "what-did-they-know-and-when-did-they-know-it." Instead, Blind Trust will step back from the noise to put the Enron drama in a greater historical context. (Original Broadcast Date: February 22, 2002) Language: English. In this blistering polemic, veteran journalist Mick Hume presents an uncompromising defence of freedom of expression, which he argues is threatened in the West not by jackbooted censorship but by a creeping culture of conformism and you-can't-say-that. The cold-blooded murder of the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists in January 2015 brought a deadly focus to the issue of free speech. Leaders of the free-thinking world united in condemning the killings, proclaiming ‘Je suis Charlie'. But it wasn't long before many commentators were arguing that the massacre showed the need to apply limits to free speech and to restrict the right to be offensive. It has become fashionable not only to declare yourself offended by what somebody else says, but to use the ‘offence card' to demand that they be prevented from saying it. Social media websites such as Twitter have become the scene of ‘twitch hunts' where online mobs hunt down trolls and other heretics who express the ‘wrong' opinion. And trigger warnings and other measures to ‘protect' sensitive students from potentially offensive material have spread from American universities across the Atlantic and the Internet. Hume argues that without freedom of expression, our other liberties would not be possible. Against the background of the historic fight for free speech, Trigger Warning identifies the new threats facing it today and spells out how unfettered freedom of expression, despite the pain and the problems it entails, remains the most important liberty of all. ungekürzt. Objective Troy tells the gripping and unsettling story of Anwar al-Awlaki, the once-celebrated American imam who called for moderation after 9/11, a man who ultimately directed his outsized talents to the mass murder of his fellow citizens. It follows Barack Obama's campaign against the excesses of the Bush counterterrorism programs and his eventual embrace of the targeted killing of suspected militants. And it recounts how the president directed the mammoth machinery of spy agencies to hunt Awlaki down in a frantic, multimillion-dollar pursuit that would end with the death of Awlaki by a bizarre, robotic technology that is changing warfare: the drone. Scott Shane, who has covered terrorism for The New York Times over the last decade, weaves the clash between president and terrorist into both a riveting narrative and a deeply human account of the defining conflict of our era. Awlaki, who directed a plot that almost derailed Obama's presidency and then taunted him from his desert hideouts, will go down in history as the first United States citizen deliberately hunted and assassinated by his own government without trial. But his eloquent calls to jihad, amplified by YouTube, continue to lure young Westerners into terrorism - resulting in tragedies from the Boston marathon bombing to the murder of cartoonists at a Paris weekly. Awlaki's life and death show how profoundly America has been changed by the threat of terrorism and by our own fears. Illuminating and provocative, and based on years of in-depth reporting, Objective Troy is a brilliant reckoning with the moral challenge of terrorism and a masterful chronicle of our times. ungekürzt.
