Begleitet von den Linernotes von Steve Barrow, Autor des Buchs "Rough Guide To Reggae", präsentiert die Kompilation insgesamt 19 Soul-infizierte, von Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd produzierte Offbeat-Songs, die überwiegend gegen Ende der Sechziger entstanden. Genealogisch gesehen also zwischen Ska und Early Reggae bzw. Roots Reggae. Mit von der Partie sind "harmony groups" wie die Gaylads, John Holt & The Paragons oder Carlton & The Shoes, deren Faszination für US-amerikanische Vorbilder wie Curtis Mayfield und andere berühmte Soul-Interpreten unüberhörbar ist. Ohnehin ist der Einfluss von Soul auf Reggae offenkundig, doch nirgendwo ist er so ausgeprägt wie im Rocksteady. Dessen Ära drückten insbesondere Stimmwunder wie Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson und Owen Gray ihren Stempel auf. Sie sind neben Größen wie The Heptones (mit dem Bob-Dylan-Cover "I Shall Be Released"), The Actions und Cannon & The Soul Vendors ebenfalls auf "Rocksteady 2" vertreten.     The Silvertones were steeped in the grand tradition of Jamaican vocal trios along with other greats such as The Heptones, The Abyssinians and The Kingstonians. Formed in 1964 by Delroy Denton, Keith Coley and Gilmore Grant, the group recorded under a variety of names in the ska and rocksteady era for Duke Reid's Treasure Isle and Coxsone Dodd's Studio One, before hooking up with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. Originally released in 1973, The Silvertones' debut Silver Bullets was recorded at Perry's Black Ark studio with vocal tracks captured at King Tubby's Dromilly Avenue studio in a marathon, all-night session. While firmly planted in roots reggae, Silver Bullets' dense harmonies and relaxed vibe harken back to rocksteady. The album marks an interesting point in Jamaican music where the past and the future are visible in the grooves of a single LP-from classic rocksteady-tinged love songs like "That's When It Hurts" and "Rock Me In Your Soul" to the Rasta anthem "Rejoice Jah Jah Children." Antarctica Starts Here presents the first widely available domestic release of Silver Bullets. This reissue is part of an archival series that focuses on Trojan's essential '60s and '70s catalogue.     Coxsone's Music 2 (1959-1963)
    Die Ursuppe, aus der Reggae entstand: Fantastische Aufnahmen aus der Prä-Studio-One-Ära.Der musikalische Reichtum Jamaikas ist einfach unglaublich. Ein Großteil dessen lässt sich auf das Wirken von Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd zurückführen. Dass dieser bereits vor der Gründung seines legendären Studio One im Jahr 1963 außerordentlich aktiv war, wissen wir spätestens seit der atemberaubenden Zusammenstellung "Coxsone’s Music" von 2015. Nun liegt deren Nachfolgerin vor. Am Konzept hat sich nichts geändert. Die Kompilation führt in die Zeit zurück, als Clement Dodd Ende der 1950er, Anfang der Sechziger talentierten Nachwuchs unter seine Fittiche nahm und mit diesem Prä-Reggae-Stücke produzierte. Die frisch geschnittenen Dubplates testete er direkt im Anschluss mit seinem Downbeat Sound System in den Dancehalls Kingstons. Was gut ankam, wurde auf Vinyl gepresst und war in der Regel kommerziell erfolgreich. Eine grandiose Auswahl dessen findet sich auf "Coxsone’s Music 2". Die Bandbreite reicht von Rhythm & Blues über Jazz und Gospel bis zu Proto-Ska und Rasta-Musik. Zu den vertretenen Künstlern gehören Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Toots and The Maytals, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson und Owen Gray.
