Although many denied it, a giant ocean liner was dying. The superstitious nodded their heads, knowing her fate had already been sealed. The freezing Atlantic crept up to the forecastle head as the massive vessel, with all her lights aglow, slowly, almost imperceptibly, sank at the bow. ungekürzt. Language: English. When a convoy of 45 ships tries to make it from Halifax to England, it finds progress sabotaged by an onslaught of enemy submarine torpedoes. Terror strikes the crews who are forced to witness their comrades drowning or becoming human torches amid the burning oil spilling from the ships. Engine failure forces the SS Regal Gesture to drop out of the convoy and make her way across the hostile waters alone and undefended. Will the Regal Gesture and her crew make it to port with a fire in her hold, an unexploded bomb in her forecastle, no wireless and a half-crazed man for a skipper? ungekürzt. Language: English. Perceval Gibbon (1879-1926) was an author and journalist, working on the Rand Daily Mail in South Africa and several other publications. He is best remembered for his masterly short stories which were often characterized by an ironic twist at the end. The Murderer is just such a tale. It tells the story of Conroy, a young English sailor who is bullied and beaten by the brutal mate of the German merchant ship Villingen. Conroy is goaded on by the other members of the crew and ends up publically blurting out a vow of revenge on the mate. He himself would have quickly forgotton the incident, but his fellow sailors are quick to encourage him to see the thing through. One supplies him with a weapon, others remind him repeatedly of his purpose. But when he is on watch as look-out one night, the mate is accidentally swept off the forecastle head by a wave onto the main deck below, hitting his head hard and killing him instantly, everyone in the crew assumes that Conroy has murdered him. Conroy finds himself in a very uncomfortable position indeed... but then he realizes how to deal with the situation. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Cathy Dobson. Orphaned at five, nothing held Whidden back from embarking on sea life seven years later. Serving as an apprentice, he quickly proved his worth and earned himself a mate's position by his early 20s. Graduating to third, second, and first office, he ended his career in command of, and having part-ownership of, his own vessel. This memoir, Ocean Life in the Old Sailing Ship Days, records a series of real events from his childhood impressions of rough and ready seamen to his thrilling and brutal experiences of war. His travels saw him spanning the world with stops at major ports such as Honolulu, Buenos Aires, Calcutta, and Liverpool. His life spans the changes in the shipping industry over the 19th and into the 20th century. During the Civil War, Whidden was heavily involved in profitable island trading in the Bahamas to elude Confederate sailors. However, shortly after the close of the war, in 1870, Whidden left sailing as he found it being overtaken by foreign interests. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Perkins.
