Doch dieser Begriff trifft die Sache nicht, schon weil ihn Egon Krenz prägte, der kurzzeitige Herrscher im SED-Reich - und damit ausgerechnet Maßnahmen zur Rettung seines untergehenden Regimes meinte. Vor allem aber beschreibt der Terminus nur unzureichend die Bedeutung dessen, was in diesem -Epochenjahr und in der unmittelbar folgenden Zeit geschah. Denn in Wirklichkeit handelte es sich um eine Revolution - in Ausmaß und Wirkung vergleichbar nur mit der Französischen Revolution. Jener Umwälzung, die genau 200 Jahre zuvor das Ende der Monarchie im mächtigsten Staat Europas und der uralten Ständeordnung dort brachte, und die darüber hinaus in der westlichen Welt den Ideen von Volkssouveränität, der universalen Geltung der Menschenrechte und eines liberalen Verfassungsstaates zum Sieg verhalf. Die Französische Revolution war eine Zäsur von welt geschichtlicher Bedeutung; sie sei "kaum mit einem an deren historischen Ereignis vergleichbar", wie der Historiker Ernst Schulin formulierte - außer eben der Revolution von 1989. Denn auch die zertrümmerte ein längst morsch gewordenes Ancien Régime: das der kommunistischen Diktaturen in Osteuropa. Sie löste zudem eine vollständige ökonomische Transformation eines halben Kontinents aus, von der Elbe bis zum Ural und dar über hinaus bis nach Asien: den Übergang von der Plan- zur Marktwirtschaft. Und nicht zuletzt folgte dem Kollaps der Regime in den Satellitenstaaten wenig später der Zusammenbruch der UdSSR, des Imperiums im Zentrum des Ostblocks. Und das warf die seit 1945 herrschende globale politische Ordnung um. Denn mit dem Untergang der Supermacht des Ostens endete die Konfrontation zwischen Kommunismus und westlicher Demokratie im Kalten Krieg. Der britische Geschichtswissenschaftler und Deutschland -Experte Timothy Garton Ash hat das Jahr 1989 ein annus mirabilis genannt, ein "Jahr der Wunder" - und nicht das geringste jener Mirakel war die Gewaltlosigkeit, mit der die Veränderungen durchgesetzt wurden. Etwa in Polen, wo sich Vertreter des Regimes mit- Dissidenten an einen Runden Tisch setzten und auf Machtbeteiligung der Opposition einigten. Oder in der DDR, wo SED- Funktionäre öffentlich die gewaltsame Niederschlagung von Protesten erwogen, die Parteiführung noch am 7. Oktober in allem Gepränge das 40. Jubiläum der Staatsgründung feierte - und wo dann, nach dem Fall der Mauer am 9. November, das kommunistische System binnen Tagen einfach in sich zusammenbrach. Oder in der Tschechoslowakei, wo die "Samtene Revolution" den einst verfemten Schriftsteller und mehrmals inhaftierten Bürgerrechtler Václav Havel zum Präsidenten machte. Blutig war der Umsturz allein in Rumänien. Doch hier waren es vor allem die Kräfte der Konterrevolution, Teile der alten Eliten, die Gewalt anwendeten und mehr als 1000 Menschen töteten. So war der rumänische Diktator Nicolae einst Ludwig XVI. in Frankreich während der Aufstände hingerichtet wurde. Von den grundstürzenden Ereignissen des bewegten Jahres 1989, von der epochemachenden Revolution in -Osteuropa und ihren Folgen in den Jahrzehnten danach handelt dieses Heft. Sie prägen den Kontinent bis heute.
