Kill the Father: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1100min
In this fascinatingly complex thriller, two people, both shattered by their pasts, team to solve a series of killings and abductions - a ruthlessly planned escalation that turns out to be merely the visible surface of something far more sinister. When a woman is beheaded in a park outside Rome and her six-year-old son goes missing, the police unit assigned to the case sees an easy solution: They arrest the woman's husband and await his confession. But the chief of Rome's major crimes unit doubts things are so simple. Secretly, he lures to the case two of Italy's top analytical minds: Deputy Captain Colomba Caselli, a fierce, warrior-like detective still reeling from having survived a bloody catastrophe, and Dante Torre, a man who spent his childhood trapped inside a concrete silo. Fed by the gloved hand of a masked kidnapper who called himself "the Father", Dante emerged from his ordeal with crippling claustrophobia but also with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and hyperobservant capacities. All evidence suggests that the Father is back and active after being dormant for decades. Indeed, he has left telltale signs that signal he's looking forward to a reunion with Dante. But when Colomba and Dante begin following the ever more bizarre trail of clues, they grasp that what's really going on is darker than they ever imagined. ungekürzt. Language: English. Strong Boy: The Life and Times of John L. Sullivan, America’s First Sports Hero , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 714min
I can lick any son of a bitch in the world. So boasted John L. Sullivan, the first modern heavyweight boxing champion of the world, a man who was the gold standard of American sports for more than a decade and the first athlete to earn more than a million dollars. He had a big ego, a big mouth, and even bigger appetites. His womanizing, drunken escapades, and chronic police-blotter presence were godsends to a burgeoning newspaper industry. The larger-than-life boxer embodied the American dream for late 19th-century immigrants as he rose from Boston's Irish working class to become the most recognizable man in the nation. In the process the "Boston Strong Boy" transformed boxing from outlawed bare-knuckle fighting into the gloved spectacle we know today. Strong Boy tells the story of America's first sports superstar, a self-made man who personified the power and excesses of the Gilded Age. Everywhere John L. Sullivan went, his fists backed up his bravado. Sullivan's epic brawls, such as his 75-round bout against Jake Kilrain, and his cross-country barnstorming tour in which he literally challenged all of America to a fight are recounted in vivid detail, as are his battles outside the ring with a troubled marriage, wild weight and fitness fluctuations, and raging alcoholism. Strong Boy gives listeners ringside seats to the colorful tale of one of the country's first Irish American heroes and the birth of the American sports media and the country's celebrity obsession with athletes. ungekürzt. Diamond smugglers. A police conspiracy. High tech spies. Assassins intent on derailing Middle East peace talks. Customs Investigator James Winter must overcome them all if he is to save his career - and his life. Winter, an ex-MI5 operative, battles to clear his name after being wrongly accused of colluding with diamond smugglers. When suspended, he vows to discover how the smugglers repeatedly avoided the traps set by his team. But as his wife undergoes cancer treatment, he finds it hard to balance time at her bedside with action to vindicate himself. An email from their high tech equipment supplier soon sets Winter on the trail of a Mossad spy whom he discovered is somehow involved. The chase takes him from the windswept Romney Marsh of Southern England to Helsinki and Finland’s snowy interior and rapidly places him in the path of a Syrian assassination squad. Al-Jabib ran a gloved fingertip across the engraved skull and crossbones and felt a tingle of anticipation mix with his nerves. It was really happening; he, Bashar Al-Jabib, was about to initiate the most audacious operation in all Syrian history. He touched the locket that hung around his neck. 'Mum and Dad, you’d be proud of me.' In this fast-paced and suspenseful espionage thriller, James Winter stumbles into an international mystery involving Mossad, a Middle East terror plot to destabilise Israel and the global political climate. With the help of a dubious partner, Winter risks his life, but will he be able to stop an international conspiracy and clear his name? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Simon Darwen. Scarpetta: Scarpetta, Book 16, Hörbuch, Digital, 349min
Leaving behind her private forensic pathology practice in Charleston, South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta accepts an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured man on Bellevue Hospital's psychiatric prison ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and when she has her gloved hands on him, he begins to talk - and the story he has to tell turns out to be one of the most bizarre she has ever heard. The injuries, he says, were sustained in the course of a murder...that he did not commit. Is Bane a criminally insane stalker who has fixed on Scarpetta? Or is his paranoid tale true, and it is he who is being spied on, followed and stalked by the actual killer? The one thing Scarpetta knows for certain is that a woman has been tortured and murdered - and more violent deaths will follow. Gradually, an inexplicable and horrifying truth emerges: Whoever is committing the crimes knows where his prey is at all times. Is it a person, a government? And what is the connection between the victims? In the days that follow, Scarpetta; her forensic psychologist husband, Benton Wesley; and her niece, Lucy, who has recently formed her own forensic computer investigation firm in New York, will undertake a harrowing chase through cyberspace and the all-too-real streets of the city - an odyssey that will take them at once to places they never knew, and much, much too close to home. Throughout, Cornwell delivers shocking twists and turns, and the kind of cutting-edge technology that only she can provide. Once again, she proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall. Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War 1914 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1738min
The Amazon History Book of the Year 2013 is a magisterial chronicle of the calamity that befell Europe in 1914 as the continent shifted from the glamour of the Edwardian era to the tragedy of total war. Nineteen fourteen was a year of unparalleled change. The year that diplomacy failed, imperial Europe was thrown into its first modernised warfare and white-gloved soldiers rode in their masses across pastoral landscapes into the blaze of machine guns. What followed were the costliest days of the entire war. But how had it happened? In Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War 1914, Max Hastings, best-selling author of the acclaimed All Hell Let Loose, answers at last how World War I could ever have begun. Ranging across Europe, from Paris to St. Petersberg, from Kings to corporals, Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War 1914 traces how tensions across the continent kindled into a blaze of battles - not the stalemates of later trench-warfare but battles of movement and dash where Napoleonic tactics met with weapons from a newly industrialised age. A searing analysis of the power brokering, vanity and bluff in the diplomatic maelstrom reveals who was responsible for the birth of this catastrophic world in arms. Mingling the experiences of humbler folk with the statesmen on whom their lives depended, Hastings asks: whose actions were justified? From the outbreak of war through to its terrible making and the bloody gambles in Sarajevo and Mons, Le Cateau, Marne and Tannenberg, this is the international story of World War I in its most severe and influential period. Published to coincide with its 100th Anniversary, Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War 1914 explains how and why this war, which shattered and changed the Western world for ever, was fought. ungekürzt. Still Dreaming: My Journey from the Barrio to Capitol Hill , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 932min
A candid, savvy, inspiring, and often hilarious memoir by one of America's most fearless political leaders. Beloved by the immigrants and working people whose rights he has championed, 11-term Congressman Luis Gutierrez is, among Latinos and along with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the most recognized Hispanic public figure in America. Here Gutierrez recounts his life between two worlds: too Puerto Rican in America, where he was born and yet was told to "go back to where you came from"; too American in Puerto Rico, where he was ridiculed as a "gringo" who couldn't speak Spanish. For much of his early life, he seemed like the last person who would rise to national prominence. Yet his tremendous will and resilience shaped his varied experiences - from picking coffee beans to driving a cab - into one of the most surprising careers in American politics. He campaigned for Chicago's first black mayor, Harold Washington. Someone threw a Molotov cocktail through the window of his house, and he only grew more committed to reform. Tested in the crucible of the notoriously tough Chicago city council, he earned the nickname "El Gallito": the little fighting rooster. Gutierrez was one of the first Latino public figures to support gay rights; he led the fight to cut Congressional paychecks, hashed out legislation with both Ted Kennedy and John McCain, and fought with Newt Gingrich and George W. Bush. Despite his strong support for Barack Obama in two elections, he has twice been arrested while protesting for immigrants in front of the Obama White House. From recollections of his failures as a teenage activist to his crackling observations of the nautical decor in Kennedy's office and the white-gloved waiters of the Speaker's dining room, Gutierrez is as endearing to the reader as he is sometimes maddening to his colleagues, inspiring us all to stand up for our rights and for those of others. ungekürzt. Royally Screwed: British Monarchy Revealed , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 248min
Who are they really? Gluckstein? Schlesswig? Coburg? Battenberg? Holstein? Pils? Maybe not Holstein Pils, but definitely Holstein, Schloss, Saxe, Coburg...Windsors? Is it any wonder they are confused, and without doubt, dysfunctional! This is Britain's first family and yep, they are not even British. But let's not hold that against them, it may even be a plus! Many truly great people are not even British, but who cares about them? These people know how to throw a party, put on a wedding and without doubt, they have the BEST funerals. Please, Hollywood, do you know how to draw an audience of half the world's population to one of your lame movies? Best box office weekend, six million? Give me a break, Diana's funeral drew a viewing audience of 320 million and the BBC weren't even allowed to film La Familia Windsoreo, in the church. All you got was Elton John and a wooden box, and let's face it, it was the greatest television EVER. Four hours and four boxes of tissues later. It was dramatic and powerful and several hours later we got to see the star turn. No, not Elton. We had already seen him, but Her Majesty. The Queen did make her appearance later in the proceedings. This was a very big deal, because she walked out of Buckingham Palace as the coffin passed and she made a historical neck bow as it passed. This was a big deal because no Queen, especially not this Queen, had ever done such a thing. Not ever before in the history of Queens. It's always amazing to me that millions of people will turn out from all over the world to see a woman who doesn't sing, dance or tell jokes, and usually doesn't even smile; but merely waves a gloved hand under a wide brimmed hat. There is no-one else alive today who can command that type of universal acclaim or interest. No politician, rock star or actor. It is a phenomenon. In the book Royally Screwed, we examine the thousand year institution to which this particular Queen b ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jacalyn Flax.
