Although Thomas Henry Huxley is most commonly known as Charles Darwin’s Bulldog (Pitbull, today?), the fact remains that he was one of the most insightful thinkers to ever write about the nature of science and its methods.Huxley coined the common usage of the word agnostic (as in “not” or “un” knowing) in contradistinction to the more commonly used Greek word gnosis (as in “knowing” or “to know”). He was an eminently rational man, who though critical of dogmatic religion and believed in the high ethical standards of Judaism and Christianity in terms of how we should treat one another. This small book contains 100 aphorisms from a much larger collection culled by Henrietta A. Huxley at the beginning of the 20th century and published in London, England, in 1908. Our hope is that these penetrating thoughts (occasionally Koan-like in their import) will serve as guideposts on how to become a better critical thinker in all endeavors, scientific or otherwise. ungekürzt. For fans of Eckhart Tolle - a guide to mastering self-awareness through direct experience, not old presumptions or harmful thought patterns.Through decades of martial arts and meditation practice, Peter Ralston discovered a curious and paradoxical fact: that true awareness arises from a state of not knowing. Even the most sincere investigation of self and spirit, he says, is often sabotaged by our tendency to grab too quickly for answers and ideas as we retreat to the safety of the known. This "Hitchhiker's Guide to Awareness" provides helpful guideposts along an experiential journey for those Western minds predisposed to wandering off to old habits, cherished presumptions, and a stubbornly solid sense of self. With ease and clarity, Ralston teaches listeners how to become aware of the background patterns that they are usually too busy, stressed, or distracted to notice. The Book of Not Knowing points out the ways people get stuck in their lives and offers listeners a way to make fresh choices about every aspect of their lives - from a place of awareness instead of autopilot.  ungekürzt. Sabra Ciancanelli has long shared her love of family through the captivating storytelling and insightful writing in the best-selling devotional book Daily Guideposts. Thin Places, her first book, reveals how her sister's sudden death at age 45 catapulted her into numbing grief. To her great surprise, however, it opened her eyes to "thin places" - moments when the spiritual realm felt close, immediate, and even tangible. Sabra discovered that the more she took notice, the more present the thin places seemed to be. What's more, she became convinced that her sister was still lovingly present in her life. In this audiobook Sabra and others share their own incomprehensible glimpses of God and experiences of thin places. Through these accounts of God's divine guidance, mysterious comfort from beyond, inexplicable protection, immeasurable reassurance, answers that came in dreams and visions, and angels who give aid at the exact right moment, you will move through your own hard times and feel God's blessings again and again. You will come to know that the veil between heaven and Earth is very thin and that it parts at times, giving us glimpses of eternity. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sabra Ciancanelli. We all know that perfect parenting does not exist, yet we still struggle with the social expectations that teach us that being imperfect is synonymous with being inadequate. These messages are powerful and we end up spending precious time and energy managing perception and the carefully edited versions of the families we show to the world. On The Gifts of Imperfect Parenting, Dr. Brené Brown invites us on a journey to transform the lives of parents and children alike. Drawing on her 12 years of research on vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame, she presents ten guideposts to creating what she describes as "wholehearted" families where each of us can continually learn and grow as we reach our full potential. "It's actually our ability to embrace imperfection that will help us teach our children to have the courage to be authentic, the compassion to love themselves and others, and the sense of connection that gives true purpose and meaning to life," states Dr. Brown. The Gifts of Imperfect Parenting is a practical and hopeful program for raising children who know that they are worthy of love, belonging, and joy. Language: English. Narrator: Brené Brown, PhD. We all come into this world full of promise and possibility. For some, when born into a healthy and highly functional family, the journey is quite easy, with guideposts and directions given freely. However, that is a very small population of people. Most of us were born into families that were in their own way struggling for independence, accomplishment, safety, or security. For the millions of people who grew up in painful families, whether by absent parents, abusive parents, or those who were ill-equipped, noted therapist Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse shows that they do not have to follow a family tradition of compulsion or addiction. In the revised edition of the classic Learning to Love Yourself, Wegscheider-Cruse explains that it is possible to create our own self-worth at any time in our lives, even as adults. She guides listeners on a journey to greater self-worth, explaining how to eliminate toxic, self-defeating messages; how to choose healthier, new perspectives; and how to reinvent yourself each day, open to a world of possibilities. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio. ungekürzt. Language: English. In Radical Hope and the Healing Power of Illness, Jungian analyst Bud Harris PhD helps listeners examine the emotional impact of illness and the life lessons, self-knowledge, and freedom that coping with difficult circumstances can provide. Jungian psychology teaches that illnesses and problems can help people grow - to move beyond "normal" existence and the myth of "the good life". Harris guides listeners toward a transformation in thinking - to a more holistic, authentic way to process the emotional effects and the deeper meanings of illness. This guide's goal is not to "fix" sufferers or ignore and bury their emotional challenges. Rather, it leads them through a step-by-step process aimed at letting hardship open their minds and hearts to the possibilities of life, uncover inner strength, and become their own authentic selves. Along the journey, Harris provides guideposts - checkpoints that help listeners examine their reactions to what they've been learning and apply the concepts to their own lives. Because physical illness has a heartfelt effect on the patient's entire support network, loved ones, caregivers, and medical practitioners can also use this guide to connect with, better understand, and impactfully process illness and loss - toward a renewed, reenergized outlook on life. ungekürzt. The editor-in-chief of Guideposts magazine presents life-changing stories - including his own recovery from addiction and depression - that demonstrate the simple keys to personal change and fulfillment. Years of listening to other people's stories of going through tough times, hoping to overcome difficult odds, or trying to find a way to make a difference in the world brought Edward Grinnan to the understanding that personal change is vital to achieving success. In each chapter of The Promise of Hope, Grinnan weaves the tales of other people with his own story to reveal how each of us can learn about the keys to powerful personal change: honesty, willingness, imagination, commitment, faith, forgiveness, acceptance, resilience, and love. He shows these principles at work in his own never-before told personal struggle with alcoholism, and how he has learned through his own missteps to accept change and become the person he was meant to be. Through the telling of these stories, each of us can find inspiration and a positive approach to daily living. By listening to the real-life experiences of Edward Grinnan and others, each of us can find a way to change and grow. As we share Grinnan's struggles and eventual triumphs, each of us will be invited to share our own stories and consider how the nine keys can make a true difference. ungekürzt. Language: English.
