The Roman Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE: The History and Legacy of Rome's Destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 82min
[T]hey ran every one through whom they met with, and obstructed the very lanes with their dead bodies, and made the whole city run down with blood, to such a degree indeed that the fire of many of the houses was quenched with these men's blood. And truly so it happened, that though the slayers left off at the evening, yet did the fire greatly prevail in the night, and as all was burning, came that eighth day of the month Gorpieus [Elul] upon Jerusalem; a city that had been liable to so many miseries during the siege, that, had it always enjoyed as much happiness from its first foundation, it would certainly have been the envy of the world. Nor did it on any other account so much deserve these sore misfortunes, as by producing such a generation of men as were the occasions of this its overthrow. - Josephus The Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE is arguably the most important event in Jewish history. First, it was the central battle in the First Jewish-Roman war. Second, the failure of the siege on the Jewish side resulted in the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, a disaster that would eventually prove both permanent and catastrophic, since it was never rebuilt. Third, it permanently altered the diaspora of Judaism in the ancient world. Fourth, because it was indecisive in breaking the power of the Jewish revolt permanently, it was also inconclusive and led to further, inevitable revolts that broke Judean identity completely. The siege of Jerusalem was a classic case of two opposing and incompatible worldviews. It was not the first time the Romans had conquered the capital of the kingdom, nor was it the first time Jerusalem had been sacked by a foreign power. It was unusual for the Romans, however, because it was not the final act that such a conquest generally was. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. I Stood with Wellington , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 748min
In February, 1815, after nine months in exile, Napoleon Bonaparte, the deposed Emperor of the French, escaped from the Isle of Elba. Seizing the initiative while the European powers bicker amongst themselves at the Congress of Vienna, Napoleon advances towards Belgium with an enormous army, where the combined forces of Prussia and England are cantoned. The French Emperor knows that if he can achieve a decisive capture in Brussels, it will shatter the already fragile European alliance. Leading the allies is Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington; the venerable British field marshal who defeated Napoleon's best generals in Spain, yet who the emperor had never personally met in battle. Napoleon knows that if he can draw away Wellington's chief Prussian ally, Gebhard von Blucher, and destroy his army first, he can unleash his entire might against the British. A victory over the unbeaten Wellington will cripple the alliance even further, as it will then deprive them of both English soldiers and financing. In Belgium, Captain James Henry Webster has finally returned to a line regiment after being terribly wounded at the Siege of Badajoz three years prior. He is given command of a line company within the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, the elite of the British Infantry. A series of indecisive clashes will lead to a collision between the two greatest military minds of the age and the bloodiest single day of the entire century, as Wellington and Napoleon lead their armies to either immortality or oblivion. For Captain Webster, he fights for both his nation and to protect his young daughter in Brussels. Along with the rest of the Guards Division, he finds himself at the apex of the battle, where the fate of the entire world will be decided; at a place called Waterloo. ungekürzt. Language: English. Horsemanship Through Life: A Trainer's Guide to Better Living and Better Riding
"Chances are real good that if a person is indecisive, angry, scattered, hesitant, belligerent, argumentative, bossy, or impatient in everyday life, he is bound to bring those same qualities to his horsemanship, and in turn, his horse will tend to reflect those qualities. By the same token, if a person is patient, calm, willing, quiet, self-confident, focused, and dependable, it is more than likely to be those qualities the horse will reflect." -Mark Rashid Here is compelling meditation from renowned horseman Mark Rashid on all the ways that the principles we apply in our dealings with fellow humans can apply to our relationships with our horses, and vice versa. Rashid describes how his discovery of the Japanese martial art aikido helped reenergize his commitment to positive horse training and self-improvement at a time when his dedication was flagging, with negative consequences for his health. He began taking classes in aikido and, with dedicated training, came to recognize its transformative effects on his sense of self. He found his mental and physical communication with others had improved greatly, and understood the incredible benefits that aikido might hold for greater emotional balance and understanding between a horse and its rider during training. By sharing his examples from personal experience with horses in the lively and engaging style that has made his earlier books so successful, Rashid shows us how the things he learned can be applied to guide you further on your path with horses. This is a book you'll want to share with your friends and relatives, whether they are horse lovers or not. Every reader will find something new about how to form a more mutually communicative relationship with a horse you have, or hope to have one day in the future. Horsemanship Through Life is about awareness, learning, teaching, honesty, integrity, and much more. It is about more than tips or technique; it is about principles to live by. It is about taking responsibility for our lives and our relationships with horses and humans. It doesn't take long to read, but will be with you for life. The Ancient Roman Sieges of Jerusalem and Masada: The History of the First Jewish-Roman War's Most Famous Battles , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 178min
The Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE is arguably the most important event in Jewish history. It was not the first time the Romans had conquered the capital of the kingdom, nor was it the first time Jerusalem had been sacked by a foreign power. It was unusual for the Romans, however, because it was not the final act that such a conquest generally was. With few exceptions, such as the Carthaginians and the Celts, the Romans had not encountered an opponent who refused to remain defeated. Roman generals and governors found this stubborn resistance unnerving and that may have contributed to an increased cruelty toward the local Jewish population, not that the Romans generally required an excuse to be brutal. To the Romans' bewilderment, the Jews were absolutely, adamantly opposed to worshiping any deity above God (in the universal form of Yahweh), or even alongside or beneath God. At this point in their theological history, the Jews had become strict monotheists. Worshiping the Emperor as a deity would imperil their immortal souls. Therefore, they absolutely refused to do this and were willing to die for their faith. The Jewish refusal to tolerate the cult of the emperor in their main place of worship was a direct challenge to Roman political power. The Roman refusal to recognize Jewish monotheism was a direct challenge to Jewish theology. The clash of ideologies would result in many casualties. Josephus, a primary source ungekürzt. Preface to Wang Du-Lu's Anthology (eBook, ePUB)
Wang Du-Lu was a writer who was once forgotten. Many people in mainland China recalled him or just knew his name only because of the Academy Award-winning film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". However, watching the film is certainly no replacement for reading the original! and without reading the novel. Wang Du-Lu is the founder of knight-errant and tragic romance novels in China. The first novel Wang consciously wrote with this style was "Precious Sword, Golden Hairpin". Although this was the first one, it was a ground-breaking master-piece work based on his many years' profound accumulation of fine products of social, romance and Wuxia, hence, the author had established his indisputable status as the founding master of novels of this style. The male and female knight warriors in these love stories had superb martial arts skills, but they were only human beings, not supermen. When the author didn't give them a great task of protecting the country or saving the people, but only let them to fight to defend the "right to love", they were often fearful, troubled, hesitant or indecisive on how to deal with the love life. Although they were invincible in Jianghu, and they dared to violate the law by force if necessary, they had scruples about breaking their own moral law. Eventually, they found that the most terrifying "enemy" they faced were themselves. In Wang's social novels, tragedy often occurred to the weak who was living in lower-class, while in his knight-errant and tragic romance novels, the strong, i.e. a knight-errant, often suffered a tragedy which was tragedy of the heart.Wang Du-Lu expressed his preference for "tragic ending" over "happy ending". He wrote: "Nothing is perfect. Flaw is always a part of beauty. A 'perfect ending' is always less memorable than 'a beauty with a flaw'". Besides, life is always bitter, how could there be so many perfect things?" The "flaws" in "Dancing Crane, Singing Phoenix" and "Colorful Phoenix, Silver Snake" were the death of the heroines and the sadness of the heroes; in "Precious Sword, Golden Hairpin", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", and "Iron Knight, Silver Vase", the "flaws" were not the death of the hero or heroine, but rather their heart wounds that will never heal; while in "The Double Dragon Sword" and "A Hero at Luoyang", Wang used a touch of comedic light to antithesise their pathos. Wang made a great contribution to the Chinese martial arts literature. The elevation of Wuxia-romance novels to the realm of profoundly psychological tragedy literature by Wang was a great contribution to the Chinese martial arts fiction. Just like Sigmund Freud once indicated: "The painful struggle between different impulses was carried on in the mind of the protagonist. At the end of the struggle was not the death of the protagonist, but rather the suppression of one of these impulses". Although this impulse "disappeared" because of the protagonist's renunciation, the turbulent waves of sorrow were always hidden deep in his/her heart for the rest of his/her life.- Shop: buecher
