American Salvage , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 389min
The fiction of Bonnie Jo Campbell has been honored with the Pushcart Prize, the AWP Award for Short Fiction, and Southern Review’s Eudora Welty Prize. In this stunning collection - a National Book Award finalist - Campbell’s rural Michigan characters are both as jagged as rusty metal and as delicate as the light brush of fading dreams. American Salvage is rich with local color and peopled with characters who love and hate extravagantly. They know how to fix cars and washing machines, how to shoot and clean game, and how to cook up methamphetamine, but they have not figured out how to prosper in the 21st century. Through the complex inner lives of working-class characters, Campbell illustrates the desperation of post-industrial America, where wildlife, jobs, and whole ways of life go extinct and the people have no choice but to live off what is left behind. ungekürzt. The Shore , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 568min
The Shore. A collection of small islands sticking out from the coast of Virginia into the Atlantic Ocean that has been home to generations of fierce and resilient women. Sanctuary to some but nightmare to others, it's a place they've inhabited, fled, and returned to for hundreds of years. From a brave girl's determination to protect her younger sister as methamphetamine ravages their family to a lesson in summoning storm clouds to help end a drought, these women struggle against domestic violence, savage wilderness, and the corrosive effects of poverty and addiction to secure a sense of well-being for themselves and for those they love. Their interconnecting stories form a deeply affecting legacy of two island families, illuminating the small miracles and miseries of a community of outsiders and the bonds of blood and fate that connect them all. Dreamlike and yet impossibly real, profound and playful, The Shore is a richly unique, breathtakingly ambitious and accomplished debut novel by a young writer of astonishing gifts. ungekürzt. A new street drug on American shores is already claiming victims up and down the West Coast. A potent new form of methamphetamine called Red Ice is being produced and used not by an ordinary criminal gang, but a unit of North Korean Special Forces soldiers with a plan to reignite the Korean War on American soil. Enter OUTCAST (Operational Undertaking to Counteract Active Stateside Threats) - six ex-operatives from six of America's most powerful organizations. Each has been unceremoniously released by their respective former employer for alleged misdoings that leave their pride wounded but their essential skillsets untouched. For god and country—or simply for god? - The United States is holding an election whose results will determine how it wages the war on terror. He attends church faithfully, plays in a Christian rock band, and wonders if he's falling in love with the pastor's niece. But his decision to campaign for the church-supported candidate has unexpected consequences. He soon finds himself forced to answer an age-old question: what do you do when following your faith means breaking the law?As good intentions lead to dirty tricks—and a frightening revelation of one group's terrifying plan to take over the country—Seth learns that the Heartland isn't so far from the halls of power. Four Seconds: A Memoir , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 427min
“I’m not going to try it,” I said. “You’ll like it,” she argued. “I know I’ll like it,” I said. “That’s why I’m not going to try it.” “Try it just this once and I’ll never ask you to do it again.” That was a deal. I slipped back into the driver’s seat while Pam corn-rowed two neat lines of the silky white powder on the back of a plastic cassette tape cover. Fifteen hundred dollars every month, an abusive boyfriend, a molested child, a lost family, hotels for houses, a ruined leg, a gun to my head, a knife to my butt, and a jail cell all my own. Black eyes, bruised days, broken hours. Looking back, it seems strange what I gave up to get my roommate off my back.In her debut memoir, Andrade tells of her years with cocaine and crystal methamphetamine using, then selling, until all she had left of the life she wanted was a chalk outline and a pack of cigarettes. This is the story of her use and recovery, of the people who frustrated and inspired her, of the decision to leave the drug world. It is the story of her slow, often unsteady walk home. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Belinda Lams. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/193631/bk_acx0_193631_sample.mp3. Bangkok 8, Hörbuch, Digital, 317min
Electrifying, darkly comic, razor-edged - a thriller unlike any other. Under a Bangkok bridge, inside a bolted-shut Mercedes: a murder by snake - a charismatic African-American Marine sergeant killed by a methamphetamine-stoked python and a swarm of stoned cobras. Two cops - the only two in the city not on the take - arrive too late. Minutes later, only one is alive: Sonchai Jitpleecheep - a devout Buddhist, equally versed in the sacred and the profane - son of a long-gone Vietnam War G.I. and a Thai bar girl whose subsequent international clientele contributed richly to Sonchai’s sophistication. Now, his partner dead, Sonchai is doubly compelled to find the murderer, to maneuver through the world he knows all to well - illicit drugs, prostitution, infinite corruption - and into a realm he has never before encountered: the moneyed underbelly of the city, where desire rules and the human body is no less custom-designable than a raw hunk of jade. And where Sonchai tracks the killer - and a predator of an even more sinister variety.Thick with the authentic - and hallucinogenic - atmosphere of Bangkok, crowded with astonishing characters, uniquely smart and skeptical, literary and wildly readable, Bangkok 8 is one of a kind. Please note: This is the abridged edition. An unabridged version is also available. Language: English. Narrator: B.D. Wong. Addict Chick: Sex, Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 454min, (USK 18)
Addict Chick: Sex, Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll is brutally honest, sexually graphic, and completely real. At 34, Amanda Meredith had it all - A successful career, a home, a child, and everything that should have made her happy. She was also crazy in love; his name was Cage, and their love would become her first addiction - but not her last. Some would say that love destroyed her, but what she let ravage her mind, body, and soul had nothing to do with love and everything to do with a deep-seated need to destroy herself. With the prick of a needle, and a shot of methamphetamine, she lost everything- her child, her career, and she lost Cage. Homeless and alone on the streets of Dallas she became a statistic. A broken nobody that had hit the gutter and licked it. Her story is not for the faint of heart. Addict Chick: Sex, Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll is her heartbreak, her sorrow, and the story of how she fought like hell to save herself, with a little help from the man above. In this memoir, one woman proves that no matter who you are, and no matter how far you have fallen, nobody is beyond redemption. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stephanie Rose. On Street Fighting: Lessons Learned in a Violent Subculture , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 150min
For years, I was a violent sociopath as a direct result of my childhood and then experiences as a soldier. My adventures in the methamphetamine culture certainly exacerbated that. I am not proud of this. I'm just saying what it is; that being said, this book will articulate that experience in a series of amusing anecdotes and thoughts that explain the important lessons that I learned during that time; lessons I learned with contusions, abrasions, a couple of lacerations, my own blood, some jail time, a lot of craziness, and a great deal of pain.I highly recommend this book for martial artists, as their training does not cover, or even understand, the social dynamics of violence, aspiring street fighters that will gain a great deal of real world knowledge on this subject, anyone interested or fascinated by violence and/or fringe subcultures, and any fan of Taratino movies and/or Bukowski writing. Nothing like this has every been written before. You will learn how to substantially damage other people with some of this knowledge, among other things. I do not recommend this lifestyle and am no longer part of it, but I also regret nothing. This book is for educational purposes only. Neither the author nor the publisher assumes any responsibility for the use or misuse of the information contained in this book. Fighting is both dangerous and illegal. ungekürzt. Language: English.
