The Melodiya Chamber Ensemble has been in existence for nearly 20 years. It's three main participants were soloists of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Violinist Adolf Bruk was the concertmaster of the Bolshoi Theater as well as the director of the Bolshoi Chamber Orchestra for 15 years, performing in some of the best concert halls in the former Soviet Union. The orchestra has many recordings, among which are those with renowned singers of the sixties and seventies including Eugene Nesterenko, Elena Obraztsova, and Irina Arkhipova. Harpist Olga Ortenberg-Rakitchenkov, the niece of Adolf Bruk was the principal of the Bolshoi Orchestra. In 1974 she won first place in the International Harp Competition in Geneva Switzerland. She has toured with European and Russian orchestras, performed solo recitals, and made recordings for both radio and television. Her husband, violist Sergey Rakitchenkov, was the winner of the Soviet Union-wide viola competition in 1980 and worked as principal of the viola section in the Bolshoi Theater. In December 1979, Adolf emigrated from the Soviet Union with his wife Inga and their two children. They ended up settling in the San Francisco Bay Area where Adolf became the associate concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. After being denied permission for many years, Olga, Sergey and their daughter Liza were finally allowed to immigrate in 1987. Nearly 8 years had passed, but their families were reunited at long last. In 1988 Sergey obtained a permanent position in the viola section of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, and in 1989 Olga too joined the orchestra. They continue to work there today, Sergey as Associate Principal and Olga as Principal. The idea to form Melodiya Chamber Group was a natural outcome of the longed-for family reunion. In concert, the group has performed pieces written for ensembles, one or two instruments. An expansive and varied collection of music, spanning styles and centuries, has been the result of this collaboration. Some of the works they've played are by Tomaso Vitali, Arcongello Corelli, Rameau, Marin Marais, Purcell, Telemann, J.S. Bach, J.C. Bach, W.F. Bach, C.P. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Franz Joseph Hayden, Rossini, Alessandro Rolla, Hummel, Brahms, Spohr, Schubert, Schumann, Max Bruch, Mikhail Glinka, Glazunov, Debussy, Ravel, Max Reger, Ernst Toch, Carlos Salzedo, Hindemith, Bartok, Frank Bridge, Prokofiev, Alexander Baltin, and Piazzola to name a few. The contemporary composer Dmitry Smirnov, who currently resides in England, also wrote and dedicated several compositions to the ensemble. This CD includes studio recordings as well as live performances and is the result of numerous requests of Melodiya patrons and fans. Melodiya Group apologizes for the ambient noise audible in several of the recordings, but feels that it is important to preserve the feeling of a live music atmosphere.
