    Das Paradies und die Peri
    Robert Schumann selbst betrachtete sein 1843 in Leipzig uraufgeführtes Oratorium Das Paradies und die Peri als eines seiner gelungensten Werke. Bereits zu Lebzeiten gehörte es zu seinen am häufigsten aufgeführten Kompositionen und kam sogar bereits 1848 in New York und 1851 in Kapstadt zur Aufführung. Dass dieses Meisterwerk sowohl im Konzertsaal als auch auf Tonträger heute eher ein Schattendasein führt, liegt bestimmt nicht an der Musik, sondern vielmehr an dem zu sentimental angehauchten Text von Emil Flechsig nach dem 1817 erschienenen Orient-Epos Lalla Rookh von Thomas Moore. Peris sind geflügelte Geisterwesen der persischen Mythologie, die aus dem Paradies verstoßen wurden. Eine Peri erbittet dennoch Aufnahme und soll dafür 'des Himmels liebste Gabe' bringen. Nach zwei gescheiterten Versuchen (der letzte Blutstropfen eines sterbenden Freiheitskämpfers und der letzte Atemhauch einer sich opfernden Liebenden) öffnet sich für sie die Himmelspforte, als sie die Träne eines reumütigen Verbrechers darbringt. Die Musik gehört zweifellos zum Inspiriertesten, was Schumann geschaffen hat. Seine Erfahrung als Liedkomponist ermöglichte eine ausgewogene, bestens disponierte Partitur, in der die lyrischen Momente zwar eindeutig im Mittelpunkt stehen, die großangelegten Chöre sich aber keineswegs als Fremdkörper erweisen. Im September 2017 wird Sir Simon Rattle neuer Chefdirigent des London Symphony Orchestra. Sozusagen als Vorwegnahme seines offiziellen Einstandes bei den Londonern hat er hier ein vehementes Plädoyer für dieses immer noch viel zu selten gespielte Werk vorgelegt. Seine Mitstreiter sind neben dem London Symphony Chorus renommierte Solisten wie z.B. Sally Matthews, Bernarda Fink, Mark Padmore und Florian Boesch, die sich alle hörbar vom Enthusiasmus des Maestros haben anstecken lassen.
