Tales from Bow Street , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 427min
Bow Street Magistrates Court is justly famous as the birthplace of an efficient system of summary jurisdiction. Less well-known are some of the fascinating characters who have taken part in the court's dramas over the years. Most people know of the early pioneer stipendiary magistrates Henry and John Fielding. But what of Nicholas Bond, the ambitious and devious Bow Street Runner who (under John's patronage) became a clerk of the court and later a Bow Street Magistrate? And what of the 'noted highwayman Hawke', who had escaped prison in 1774 and now terrorised the wealthiest Londoners? Not to mention Mary Scroote, who brutally felled the man who refused her advances. At the turn of the 19th century, Bow Street took on a legally armed Britain. Tales from Bow Street is a gripping narrative of the history of London’s policing. Join Joan Lock as she delves into the criminal underworld of 18th-century London, a city riddled with pickpockets, prostitutes, highwaymen and murderers. From the hanging murders of the 1700s through to Cold War espionage and the birth of the 1950s policewoman, Lock’s book is rich in periodic detail, listenable history and enlightening anecdotes. ungekürzt. High adventure from a master storyteller about one boy's attempt to fend for himself among cruel orphan masters, corrupt magistrates, and conniving thieves. In the seaside town of Melcombe Regis, England, 1724, Oliver Cromwell Pitts wakes to find his father missing and his house flooded by a recent storm. He's alone in his ruined home, with no money and no food. Oliver's father has left behind a barely legible waterlogged note: he's gone to London, where Oliver's sister, Charity, is in trouble. Exploring damage to the town in the storm's aftermath, Oliver discovers a shipwreck on the beach. Removing anything from a wrecked ship is a hanging offense, but Oliver finds money that could save him, and he can't resist the temptation to take it. When his crime is discovered, Oliver flees, following the trail of his father and sister. The journey is full of thieves, adventurers, and treachery - and London might be the most dangerous place of all. Steel Trapp: The Academy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 499min
Steven "Steel" Trapp has been placed in an East Coast boarding school for gifted kids by his FBI agent father. He soon discovers that there's a clubby element of the faculty and upper classmen that is very secretive and protective. To his surprise, his friend Kaleigh arrives to board at the school, and it isn't long before the two realize that this is not your normal boarding school. It seems a select few students are recruited, while still minors, to serve as special "translators" for the US Government. People - including diplomats and dignitaries - will say things around kids that they wouldn't otherwise dare speak outside of embassies. The willing student "agent" takes a semester abroad and ends up spying for his country. But there are dark elements at play at the school. Foreign agents may have penetrated the school's secrecy and may have sleepers in place: kids spying on future kid spies. And there is conspiracy and competition among the elite faculty that threatens security. As Steel and Kaleigh are recruited for their first test run - trying to break a ring of pickpockets in a Boston hotel - things go impossibly wrong. Betrayal and conspiracy cloud what should have been a straightforward assignment. And all too soon, their very lives are in danger. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: William Dufris. Oliver Twist , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 891min
Oliver Twist, or The Parish Boy's Progress, is the second novel by English author Charles Dickens, and was first published as a serial, 1837 - 39. The story is of the orphan Oliver Twist, who is born in a workhouse, and then sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets, led by the elderly criminal, Fagin. Oliver Twist is notable for its unromantic portrayal by Dickens of criminals and their sordid lives, as well as for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century. The alternate title, The Parish Boy's Progress, alludes to Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, as well as the 18th-century caricature series by William Hogarth, A Rake's Progress and A Harlot's Progress. In this early example of the social novel, Dickens satirizes the hypocrisies of his time, including child labor, the recruitment of children as criminals, and the presence of street children. The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of working as a child laborer in a cotton mill, was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own youthful experiences contributed as well. Oliver Twist has been the subject of numerous adaptations for various media, including a highly successful musical play, Oliver!, and the multiple Academy Award-winning 1968 motion picture. Disney also put its spin on the novel with the movie called, Oliver & Company, in 1988. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tadhg Hynes. Travel Tales Monthly: No. 8 FEB 2015 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 182min
The February 2015 issue samples the sorts of cons and scams experienced by travelers - their quest to travel safely, securely, and relatively comfortably, without falling victim to the innumerable schemes, scams, shams, and rip-offs perpetrated upon them at just about every turn in their travels (as well as, all too often, even in their own home countries). Unfortunately travel today for anyone, and particularly for relatively naive, younger, and inexperienced travelers, has increasing challenges, what with the growing numbers of people relegated to begging, scheming, thieving, and having to do whatever they need to do to survive and get by. All too often it has just about become almost the norm for people of all persuasions and varieties to try to somehow dispossess unknowing and unsuspecting foreign travelers of their money, passports, personal possessions and effects, and travel accouterments, simply because it's the easiest way for them to get by. It's often easier to steal than to work. And work overseas is not always easy to come by for those who want or need it. And not only are there the usual local legions of pickpockets, thieves, and muggers on the prowl to contend with who are looking for victims; there are plenty of other fellow travelers guilty of doing such things as well. Often travelers find themselves in difficult and sometimes dire situations, such as running out of money, getting into trouble, contending with being far away from home, maybe even strung out on drugs, or just having difficulty surviving. Some of these travelers, as a result, find themselves succumbing to and joining the ranks of con artists and scammers who prey upon other travelers and sometimes even the locals. ungekürzt.
