I climbed into my orange plastic Kayak and zoomed off to the green shallows of Young Cove. Just what is it that makes paddling this waterway such pleasure? Sometimes I think it is the kayak music. That is the musical sound of the hull traveling through the water on a quiet day. It is constantly changing and it is always calming to me. As I come to the end of the cove I notice that there is no evidence of the shipwreck which had been rusting and disintegrating in the shallows for more than a decade. I don't know who owned the boat, but it is like the couple thousand boats which are abandoned along the 2,000 miles of shoreline in Puget Sound. Somebody's dream had died and the wreck became a persistent reminder of that failure. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Joseph B. Campo. In this environment, Dan "D2" Daniels, a retired army NCO of the old breed, sworn to protect the Constitution, finds a crashed spaceship and learns that Earth will soon be invaded. Using the technology from the spaceship, Dan forms an army of fellow senior veterans with two missions: first to revive the republic they had sworn their allegiance to, and second to save that republic - and the world along with it. The year is 2075, and the vast majority of humanity is dead. The global outbreak of a new strain of virus wiped out over 99% of the population. The lone hope rests on the slim, unready shoulders of Dr. Justin Kaes and a small team of specialists from the Center for Disease Control. The researchers have discovered a cure for the plague in the blood of a cantankerous 102 year old. But there's one minor problem: the old man couldn't care less whether humanity lives or dies. And he most certainly doesn't feel like going on a road trip to sunny California. On the way to the coast lie murderous tribes, cults, voracious animals, and the toxic remains of civilization. They face a world gone backwards, technology and industry reduced to rusting garbage. Their mission seems doomed. But there are a few decent souls still out there, citizens of Plaguesville, USA. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Fleet Cooper. Inside an old German U-Boat rusting on the bottom of the Baltic are millions in gold bars, stolen art, and a secret that could tear NATO apart. In this military political action thriller, the only one who knows the truth is Mike Randall, a battle-scarred American who survived four months in the frozen Hell of northern Germany at the end of the war. When he does speak up, he puts a target on his own forehead, one which the Russians, the West Germans, the U-boat's former owners, the Israeli Mossad, and even his own government quickly take aim at. In this mystery and suspense thriller, some want the gold, some want Randall dead, and some want proof that there is a high-ranking spy inside NATO itself. Randall's wants are much simpler in this sea adventure. Caught between the Kremlin, spies, killers, and a new, deadly, 4th Reich, he wants his revenge and to satisfy some old debts with a steel-jacketed bullet. A fast-moving action adventure, Amongst My Enemies is historical fiction and a Cold War spy thriller from the author of The Undertaker, Thursday at Noon, and Winner Lose All. ungekürzt. More than a thousand years have passed since humankind intentionally destroyed its treacherous technology, choosing to revert back to a primitive tribal state. In this society the rusting brain cases of long-inert robots are considered trophies, and the scant knowledge that has survived is doled out to an inquisitive few in monasterylike "universities". It is at one such center of learning that young Tom Cushing first reads of the legendary "Place of Going to the Stars", rumored to exist on a high butte somewhere in the western part of the land. Driven by enthusiasm and an insatiable need to track the myth to its source, Tom sets out on an amazing trek across what was once called America, teaming up with a witch, the world's last remaining robot, and other odd companions. But all the astonishing discoveries and dangers they encounter along the way will pale before the revelations that await them at journey's end. Clifford D. Simak, award-winning science fiction grandmaster, offers a breathtaking vision of the future that is both dystopian and hopeful in equal measure. In A Heritage of Stars, he boldly displays the heart, intelligence, and awesome imaginative powers that have established him as one of the all-time greatest authors of speculative fiction. ungekürzt. One of my favorite ideas is, never to keep an unnecessary soldier, Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1792. Neither Jefferson nor the other Founders could ever have envisioned the contemporary national security state, with its tens of thousands of "privateers"; its bloated Department of Homeland Security; its rusting nuclear weapons, ill-maintained and difficult to dismantle; and its strange fascination with an unproven counterinsurgency doctrine. Written with bracing wit and intelligence, Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war, with all the financial and human costs that entails. To understand how we've arrived at such a dangerous place, Maddow takes us from the Vietnam War to today's war in Afghanistan, along the way exploring the disturbing rise of executive authority, the gradual outsourcing of our war-making capabilities to private companies, the plummeting percentage of American families whose children fight our constant wars for us, and even the changing fortunes of G.I. Joe. She offers up a fresh, unsparing appraisal of Reagan's radical presidency. Ultimately, she shows us just how much we stand to lose by allowing the priorities of the national security state to overpower our political discourse. Sensible yet provocative, dead serious yet seriously funny, Drift will reinvigorate a "loud and jangly" political debate about how, when, and where to apply America's strength and power - and who gets to make those decisions. ungekürzt.
