Bent , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 106min
My back story began one fateful day in 1984 in health class. This particular day would be anything but routine, for a fifth grader who was about to take a routine test at school, required of all its students. We were asked to stand in a single file. Lined up for what, we didn't know. But it wasn't for the daily morning roll call. At first I wasn't worried, not until we had to lift our shirts so the nurse could check our back for unevenness. To perform what is otherwise known as the Adams Forward Bend Test. Screenings were performed during physical education classes. It took approximately one minute per student. Boys were screened separately from girls. During the screening you were asked to stand straight, but relaxed, with your arms hanging loosely at your sides at about the level of your knees, keeping your feet together, while looking straight ahead. Two screenings were required before parents were notified to see an orthopedist. What seemed like a simple examination was difficult for my young mind to understand. When it was finally my turn I was nervous, but I didn't have a chance at relief when it was over. The nurse pulled me aside from the rest of the group. She wanted to take a closer look at an "area of concern." I don't know what was more troubling, hearing her words, or being the only one of my peers to have to hear them. The right side of my body was more pronounced than my left. Another wards, I had what could only be described as a hump in my back. I would have to see a specialist for further assessment. Needless to say, I was stunned. All I could do was stand there in silence, isolated with my own thoughts. I didn't know what to think. I had never heard of scoliosis, much less knew what it was. I was filled with apprehension at the thought of seeing a doctor. At the doctor's office they took a series of x-rays of my midsection, checking for abnormalities. What they concluded was I had a curvature of the spine measuring between 40-4 ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Amanda Oswalt. F Scott Fitzgerald's last and unfinished novel, a gorgeous, excruciating, heady tale based on his painful experiences working as a Hollywood screenwriter. The London Nobody Knows , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 13min
Geoffrey Fletcher's London was not the big landmarks, but rather 'the tawdry, extravagant and eccentric'. He wrote about parts of the city no-one ever had before. This could be an art nouveau pub, a Victorian music hall, a Hawksmoor church or even a public toilet in Holborn in which the attendant kept goldfish in the cisterns. He was drawn to the corners of the city where 'the kids swarm like ants and there are dogs everywhere'.This classic book was originally published in 1962 and has been in and out of print ever since. In 1967 it was turned into an acclaimed documentary film starring James Mason. Following a series of sold out screenings at the Barbican and the ICA, the film was re-released on DVD in 2008. This book is a must-have for anyone with an interest in London, and will surprise even those who think they know it well. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Cruickshank. Fighting in the Great Crusade: An 8th Infantry Artillery Officer in World War II , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 551min
Fighting in the Great Crusade combines the terse clarity of George E. Schwend's World War II combat journals with Gregory Daddis's expert commentary on the greater context of that conflict. The result is the rare military work that counterpoints historical and strategic analysis against a foxhole-level view of the war in Europe as US soldiers experienced it.Schwend's story, which typifies that of young American citizen soldiers on whom the Allied cause depended, follows a draftee through the rigors of basic training and Officer Candidate School and into the grim theater of the European campaigns in 1944 and 1945. The accretion of detail forms a grittily realistic day-to-day account of military life, while Daddis's expansive historical backdrop invests with poignance even such routines as Schwend's faithful attendance at movie screenings as the soldier - and listeners - anticipate the fateful Normandy invasion.Schwend observes that despite the rigors of his training nothing could have prepared him or his comrades for the savagery of the actions in which they fought. The book is published by Louisiana State University Press. ungekürzt. Overdiagnosed: Making People Sick in Pursuit of Health , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 577min
Going against the conventional wisdom reinforced by the medical establishment and Big Pharma that more screening is the best preventative medicine, Dr. Gilbert Welch builds a compelling counterargument that what we need are fewer, not more, diagnoses. Documenting the excesses of American medical practice that labels far too many of us as sick, Welch examines the social, ethical, and economic ramifications of a health-care system that unnecessarily diagnoses and treats patients, most of whom will not benefit from treatment, might be harmed by it, and would arguably be better off without screening. Drawing on 25 years of medical practice and research, Dr. H. Gilbert Welch and his colleagues, Dr. Lisa M. Schwartz and Dr. Steven Woloshin, have studied the effects of screenings and presumed preventative measures for disease and pre-disease. Examining the social, medical, and economic ramifications of a health care system that unnecessarily diagnoses and treats patients, Welch makes a reasoned call for change that would save us from countless unneeded surgeries, debilitating anxiety, and exorbitant costs. ungekürzt.
