Mandolin Moods
About the Takoma Mandoleers The Mandoleers have been playing and performing continually since 1923, when seven members of the Nordica Club (founded in 1907) decided to start their own ensemble. The group originally met and practiced at the home of Judge Harry I. Houston in Takoma Park, Maryland, hence the name. One of the founding members, Herman von Bernewitz, was elected conductor in 1926. His dedication and energy, and that of his wife, Francine, kept the group alive. After the Nordica Club folded, the Mandoleers expanded into an orchestra. When Herman moved to Arlington, Virginia, the orchestra came with him. Herman relinquished the ba- ton to his daughter, Karen, in 1993. Since 2000, the orchestra has been headed by David A. Ruppert, a native of Little Falls, New York and a graduate of the University at Albany, where he studied conducting with William Hudson. David plays all the mandolin family of instruments and is active in the Classical Mandolin Society of America. The orchestra's repertoire comes mostly from the golden age of mandolin orchestras, roughly 1880-1930. This music has been preserved by the von Bernewitzes and orga- nizations that support mandolin orchestras, such as the Classical Mandolin Society of America, the Fretted Instruments Guild of America, and the Nagano Mandolin Orchestra archive. Two of the works on this recording were found in the Library of Congress collection.- Shop: odax

Scattered Hearts
Patrick has performed as a guitarist for the past 18 years in oDD CamP, Solaris Guitar Trio, and the electronic music duo FingerPaint. FingerPaint achieved critical acclaim and has been featured on radio programs in the US and Europe. His works for dance have been performed in New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, and the JFK Center for Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Patrick has turned to solo acoustic guitar in the past five years. Scattered Hearts is the fruit of these efforts: fourteen instrumental pieces composed and performed by Patrick on steel string guitar. Scattered Hearts is a broad and personal musical vision expressing life's joys, sorrows, and mysteries. Bert Lams of the California Guitar Trio has this to say about Scattered Hearts: 'This music takes you places. Like Haiku in music: graceful, simple, powerful, evocative. This is a heartfelt and inspiring piece of work on the guitar, I'd recommend this CD to my friends and students. Congratulations!' In the words of producer Tony Geballe (Trey Gunn Band and The League of Crafty Guitarists) "The days Patrick and I spent at his home in Takoma Park, Maryland, recording and working on this album, were a constant revelation to me. Despite having known Patrick and his sensitivity and generosity for many years, I was somehow surprised by the large spirit that pervades these pieces, and that hovered over and supported our work together. This music springs from an intensely personal vision and feeling. Patrick can often relate his music in an almost one-to-one correspondence with particular events, circumstances, or people. To work out this musical vision with clarity and precision requires a great commitment. What is remarkable to me is that these nearly literal personal statements are mediated by a wonderfully wide and expressive musical language, which while equally personal is also immediately understandable, not esoteric or difficult. This is rare. Patrick presents here a musical vision that is not simple, but it is direct. I am grateful and happy to help make this music available."- Shop: odax
