Tackling faith, doubt, and transformation, National Book Award winner Pete Hautman explores a boy's unraveling allegiance to an insular cult. A world within a world... Seven square miles of paradise, surrounded by an eight-foot chain-link fence: this is Nodd, the land of the Grace. It is all seventeen-year-old Jacob knows. Beyond the fence lies the World, a wicked, terrible place, doomed to destruction. When the Archangel Zerachiel descends from Heaven, only the Grace will be spared the horrors of the apocalypse. But something is rotten in paradise. A wolf invades Nodd, slaughtering the Grace's sheep. A new boy arrives from outside, and his scorn and disdain threaten to tarnish Jacob's contentment. Then, while patrolling the borders of Nodd, Jacob meets Lynna, a girl from the adjoining ranch, who tempts him to sample the forbidden Worldly pleasures that lie beyond the fence. Jacob's faith, his devotion, and his grip on reality are tested as his feelings for Lynna blossom into something greater, and the End Days grow ever closer. Eden West is the story of two worlds, two hearts, the power of faith, and the resilience of the human spirit. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Todd Haberkorn. A conservative historian defends America’s past by debunking four dozen common liberal myths In this follow-up to the best-selling A Patriot’s History of the United States, Professor Larry Schweikart once again challenges liberal historians and their shameful attempts to distort our country’s legacy. This time he takes on authors of popular textbooks who, in an effort to be politically correct, tarnish America’s image in the eyes of our high school and college students. The problem isn’t that liberal authors present their opinions or interpretations of history from an obvious left-wing bias. The problem is authors who actually distort facts and manipulate data in an effort to appear objective and unbiased while furthering their leftist objectives. Students learn, for example, that the Founding Fathers were elitists who drafted the Constitution in order to protect their own economic interests; that Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation only because he needed black soldiers; That racist groups such as the KKK represented our society in the early twentieth century; that the failures of capitalism caused the Great Depression. All false, as readers will discover. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Pratt. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/peng/001603/bk_peng_001603_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

When Jamie Rutherford takes a temporary assignment as lieutenant of Boston Fire's Engine 59, she doesn't anticipate any problems. She's been in the fire service for a long time, and, even though she's fairly new to Boston, she knows how to make any firehouse her home. What she's not prepared for is her reaction to firefighter Scott Kincaid. Scott is looking for a wife. It's been a fun ride as a single guy, but he's tired of being the third wheel, and nearly losing his brother-in-law finally made him realize just how much he wants a family of his own. When the new guy at the firehouse turns out to be a capable, confident, and very attractive woman, his plan is completely derailed. Hooking up with a fellow firefighter has never been part of Jamie's plan, but she's tempted by Scott - even though getting involved with him could tarnish the reputation she's worked so hard for. And Scott can't stop thinking about Jamie, despite the fact that she's his superior and not sticking around. Chemistry can crush the best-laid plans, though, and while Jamie and Scott might not be each other's future...there's no resisting the right now. ungekürzt. Language: English. I first critiqued Ken Wilber on his misunderstanding of evolution back in 1996, right after his book A Brief History of Everything was published. It has now been 18 years and if anything, Wilber has become even more firmly entrenched in his new brand of creationism, which ironically mimics much of what Christian fundamentalists object to about Darwinianism. And Wilber doesn't have to look far for alternative theories about how the universe came into being (see Stephen Hawking's Grand Design or Sean Carroll's From Eternity to Here for starters) without resorting to Eros pushing Chaos aside inside an atom so it can mate with others and create anew. Yes, we can debate the merits of evolution and astrophysics in trying to understand how the universe and life came into being. But in so doing, it is important to accurately present the arguments we oppose. Wilber has shown a tendency to abdicate that responsibility in his rush to push his creationist agenda. In so doing, and by avoiding the pertinent criticisms of Frank Visser and others, Wilber continues to tarnish his intellectual reputation. This book contains a series of essays analyzing Ken Wilber's views on evolution and intelligent design. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jim D Johnston. Space travel is so overrated. Bounty hunting isn't any better, but it's what Sloane Tarnish needs to do if she wants to fix the rundown spaceship her uncle dumped on her. So she can find him and dump it right back. Problem A: Her uncle also ditched his motley crew-made up of a cranky ace pilot and an extraneous mad scientist-and they don't exactly see her as the captain. Problem B: Her ship's too broken to leave the most dangerous system in the galaxy, where a recent power vacuum is turning the place into one orbiting cluster of fugitives, thugs, and swindlers. When Sloane sets her sights on a bounty with a reward that will solve all her problems, the Commander of the Galactic Fleet himself shows up in pursuit of the same man. The last thing Sloane needs is to get tangled in a web of galactic politics-but she won't let her prize go, either. The payoff is just too big to give up. But as dangers close in on all sides, she can't help wondering if she'll live to claim her prize… Chaos Zone is the first installment in a new space opera series full of reckless women, messy worlds, and big adventures-perfect for fans of Guardians of the Galaxy and the Mandalorian.
