How much of our fate is tied to the status of our parents and grandparents? How much does this influence our children? More than we wish to believe. While it has been argued that rigid class structures have eroded in favor of greater social equality, The Son Also Rises proves that movement on the social ladder has changed little over eight centuries. Using a novel technique - tracking family names over generations to measure social mobility across countries and periods - renowned economic historian Gregory Clark reveals that mobility rates are lower than conventionally estimated, do not vary across societies, and are resistant to social policies. The good news is that these patterns are driven by strong inheritance of abilities and lineage does not beget unwarranted advantage. The bad news is that much of our fate is predictable from lineage. Clark argues that since a greater part of our place in the world is predetermined, we must avoid creating winner-take-all societies. Clark examines and compares surnames in such diverse cases as modern Sweden, 14th-century England, and Qing Dynasty China. He demonstrates how fate is determined by ancestry and that almost all societies - as different as the modern United States, Communist China, and modern Japan - have similarly low social mobility rates. These figures are impervious to institutions, and it takes hundreds of years for descendants to shake off the advantages and disadvantages of their ancestors. For these reasons, Clark contends that societies should act to limit the disparities in rewards between those of high and low social rank. Challenging popular assumptions about mobility and revealing the deeply entrenched force of inherited advantage, The Son Also Rises is sure to prompt intense debate for years to come. Discover the hidden history of the Crusades and the many conspiracy theories that followed! What led to the crusades and why the effects of the Crusades still resonate on Christianity and Islam religions today. The Crusades are events which have marked the middle ages for Europe as well as for the Arabian world, yet at times we seem to not know nearly enough as what we should. Explore why this could be so while learning of what has transpired during the centuries of confrontation between the two most widespread religions of the world. For centuries, the meaning of and the reason behind the Crusades has shifted, depending on who is telling the narrative. In the days of Voltaire, in which resentful Renaissance writers were often more than ready to impugn the Catholic Church, the Crusades were often depicted as acts of medieval stupidity in which drunken, belligerent, and debauched masses of Europeans were blinded by religious intolerance, and goaded to attack others. Then, by the 19th century, the Crusade narrative shifted again, and in the world of far-flung European colonies the Crusades were seen and understood through the lens of imperialism, and many explained the Crusades as nothing more than an early attempt at colonialism. This mythical narrative of unwarranted European aggression continued to promulgate itself through the years until it was widely believed that the Islamic world was a completely innocent victim of the Crusades. Many came to believe that the Muslims did nothing at all to provoke the West and instead were the sole arbiters of high civilization and knowledge in a dark age, who were unfairly targeted by militant Western barbarians. But by the early 21st century, perceptions began to change again as modern examples of Muslim extremists began to make front page news with increasing frequency. When the brutally extreme conquering hordes of ISIS came on the scene, routinely making mass murder, rape, enslavement, ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charles D. Baker. Nobody is more disturbed, said President Truman, three days after the destruction of Nagasaki in 1945, "over the use of the atomic bombs than I am, but I was greatly disturbed over the unwarranted attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor and their murder of our prisoners of war. The only language [the Japanese] seem to understand is the one we have been using to bombard them. When you have to deal with a beast you have to treat him as a beast. It is most regrettable but nevertheless true." The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed more than 100,000 instantly, mostly women, children, and the elderly. Many hundreds of thousands more succumbed to their horrific injuries later, or slowly perished of radiation-related sickness. Yet the bombs were "our least abhorrent choice", American leaders claimed at the time - and still today most people believe they ended the Pacific War and saved millions of American and Japanese lives. Ham challenges this view, arguing that the bombings, when Japan was on its knees, were the culmination of a strategic Allied air war on enemy civilians that began in Germany and had till then exacted its most horrific death tolls in Dresden and Tokyo. The war in Europe may have ended but it continued in the Pacific against a regime still looking to save face. Ham describes the political manoeuvring and the scientific race to build the new atomic weapon. He also gives powerful witness to its destruction through the eyes of 80 survivors, from 12-year-olds forced to work in war factories to wives and children who faced it alone, reminding us that these two cities were full of ordinary people who suddenly, out of a clear blue summer's sky, felt the sun fall on their heads. ungekürzt. Have you ever heard your child or your partner constantly say "I can’t" or "no" or "I won’t." Do you have a habit of turning down everyone who approaches you with a request? Do you feel that other people’s requests are unwarranted, unwanted, or unreasonable? Do you hate doing things for other people? Do you feel that other people put too much pressure on you? Does your child fight you at every turn? Does your partner only do things that he or she wants to do? Do they refuse to do anything that you want them to do? Do you have a partner who does everything but what you ask of him or her? Does he or she seem primed to fight about every little thing? Do you seem to bicker or fight every time you are out because plans change and the demand avoidance adult couldn’t cope with the change in his or her routine? Do you feel like the child or adult in your life is "no fun"? Do you think they are a "stick-in-the-mud", never stepping outside their boundaries or comfort zone to do anything exciting? Or, do they only do something "fun" when it is their idea of fun, but reject any invitations to join in with what other people deem as "fun"? Most people don’t realize, but the behavior they refer to as "stubborn" or "disagreeable" in others might actually be classified as pathological demand avoidance or oppositional defiant disorder. People with these conditions might have deficits in their memory, attention, or learning. They may struggle with demands that use too much of their mental energy. They may have a preference for tasks that are easier or things they have done repetitively. They tend to like to do things that they know, and they often detest doing anything that is "different" or "new". Pathological demand avoidance and oppositional defiant disorder can be a real burden for parents and teachers. The child doesn’t want to do anything he or she thinks they "can’t" do. The child doesn’t want to do anything except what he or she ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lenhard Hardie. Art is a distinct entity. It has its own characteristic, its own function, its own role to play in society. It must be afforded the status and identity it rightly deserves in a world that is becoming ever more needful of its existence.“Art”, however, has increasingly become a catch-all term. Almost any product of the modern world shelters under it's umbrella. And thus, the word has become meaningless. There is little doubt that art is a powerful commodity of inestimable value. Yet that power is diluted and that value distorted by the inclusion of unnecessary elements into the field for which there is no justification. It is impossible to clearly define a term which has become so confused with unwarranted associations. Therefore, elucidation can be obtained by removing them. We need to distinguish what art is not, before we can begin to see what it is. Many artists and enthusiasts have been misled into focusing on specious goals. But you can know all that you need to know about art, and, inherently, you probably know more than you realise already. Clearing away the false information can dissipate the mystique. Such an unveiling should ultimately enable us to love art all the more, whatever our engagement with it.Intended primarily for artists of all colours and flavours, as well as art appreciators, this audiobook aims to free up the thinking of the artist – or indeed anyone – by opening their eyes to many unexamined assumptions, and thereby questioning the validity of strongly-held views on the subject of art and the ways in which it is perceived. Eleven Things That Art is Not isolates these points of contention in a sometimes shocking, often counter-intuitive, yet thoroughly reasoned onslaught against conventional wisdoms, all in a quest to discover the true purpose of art. This quest takes the reader on a meandering journey through quantum physics, psychology, Zen Buddhism, philosophy, mathematics and ancient civilisations. PDF supplement at www. ungekürzt.
