The Syrian Peddler , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 316min
As a reader, I love historical fiction. Among my favorites is The Shoemaker’s Wife by Adriana Trigiani. Although captivated by Trigiani’s characters, Enza and Ciro, my thoughts never veered far from my grandfather’s story as I read and reread the book. My Gidu had a similar story to tell and I only heard bits and pieces of what I believe was a fascinating life. My father’s father, Sam, arrived in the New York harbor and Ellis Island about the year 1905 from Damascus, Syria. This marked the beginning of the remarkable success of a young man who was 17 at the time. Sam began work as a peddler in the coal mining settlements during the era when men became millionaires from investments in coal, coke, and steel. He eventually becomes the proprietor of Hanna’s Department Store where he embodied the Syrian values of hard work, honesty, and trust. The central setting for The Syrian Peddler is in southwestern Pennsylvania including Pittsburgh, Uniontown, New Salem, and Masontown, spanning the years between 1905 and 1958. The story is historical fiction as not all facts were available. As much as possible, the writing is factual. My research included visits to Ellis Island, The Hotel Wolcott, New York City; The Family History Museum, Salt Lake City, Utah. I went back to places in Pennsylvania that were familiar to me: Masontown, where I went to kindergarten and St. Ellien of Homs, Syrian Orthodox Church in Brownsville. I have met several people who have emigrated from Syria. One young man came six years ago and settled in Austin, Texas, where I now live. He is saddened by the destruction of majestic buildings and the war itself. So many lives lost. I cannot begin to imagine what Sam would think today. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Complete Little Women Series: Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men, Jo's Boys (4 books in one) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 2243min
Little Women is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888). The book was written and set in the Alcott family home, Orchard House, in Concord, Massachusetts. It was published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. The novel follows the lives of four sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March – and is loosely based on the author's childhood experiences with her three sisters. The first volume, Little Women, was an immediate commercial and critical success, prompting the composition of the book's second volume, entitled Good Wives, which was also successful. Both books were first published as a single volume entitled Little Women in 1880. Alcott followed Little Women with two sequels, also featuring the March sisters: Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). Little Women was a fiction novel for girls that veered from the normal writings for children, especially girls, at the time. Little Women has three major themes:” domesticity, work, and true love. All of them are interdependent and each is necessary to the achievement of a heroine's individual identity. Little Women itself “has been read as a romance or as a quest, or both. It has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth.” Little Women has been read “as a means of escaping that life by women who knew its gender constraints only too well.” Alcott “combines many conventions of the sentimental novel with crucial ingredients of Romantic children's fiction, creating a new form of which Little Women is a unique model.” Elbert argued that within Little Women can be found the first vision of the “American Girl” and that her multiple aspects are embodied in the differing March sisters. Little Men, or Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott, first published in 1871. The novel reprises characters from Little Women and ungekürzt. Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 820min
Barton Gellman shared the Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for a keen-edged reckoning with Dick Cheney's domestic agenda in The Washington Post. In Angler, Gellman goes far beyond that series to rake on the full scope of Cheney's work and its consequences, including his hidden tole in the Bush administration's most fateful choices in war: shifting focus from aI Qaeda to Iraq, unleashing the National Security Agency to spy at home, and promoting "cruel and inhuman" methods of interrogation. Packed with fresh insights and untold stories, Angler describes a man of deep conviction and remorseless will who reshaped his office and his times. Dick Cheney played a paramount role in decisions that ranged from war and peace to the economy, the environment, and the meaning of the law. His hand was often unseen even by colleagues. Gellman parts the curtains of secrecy to show how the vice president operated and what he wrought.Angler tracks Cheney's trajectory through two terms as a loyal and valued adviser who nonetheless posed dangers to the president he served. In one riveting narrative, Gellman describes a lengthy crisis over NSA surveillance in which Cheney's close hold on information left even George Bush out of the loop. BlackBerry messages, contemporary notes, and on-the-record interviews rake us inside urgent meetings in the vice president's office, the Situation Room, the White House counsel's living room, and the president's private study. In documentary detail, Gellman shows how Cheney's unyielding course brought Bush to the brink of ruin before the president veered away. Cheney redefined his job before he even joined the ticket in 2000. Angler offers vivid details of his selection as running mate, his command of the presidential transition, and his habit of "reaching down" to steer Bush's options. September 11 amplified Cheney's importance, and Gellman shows how he guided the "war on terror" to Iraq, do ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Brian Keith Lewis. The Story About Peter Wells , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 80min
Peter Wells was 26, his partner was 18. Because this was England in 1974, when the gay age of consent was 21, Wells was sentenced to two and a half years in jail. There, he was assaulted and abused by guards and inmates alike. On release from prison, he was interviewed by Gay News just as songwriter Tom Robinson was composing "Glad to Be Gay". He devoted a verse to Wells' case, and that inspired this biography. As a generation comes of age who are incredulous that homosexuality was ever illegal, it is important to remember our social history. Robinson had highlighted it topically but, nearly 40 years on, this book was conceived to do it historically, illustrating injustice with a typical life story. However, like all of us, on closer inspection Peter Wells turned out to have a more complicated life than first appeared. Beyond the man himself, the Peter Wells story illuminates not only our persecution of gay men but other dark areas of our recent past too. His early years were fraught with tragedy, losing two sets of parents before his teens, after which he was sent to the barbarity of a "training ship" for orphaned and delinquent youths. Damaged youngsters were berated rather than counselled and the Victorian brutalization of children continued well into modern times. Peter Wells was a victim of it all. Living in an affluent Surrey village in the late 1970s, behind his ostentatious social veneer he launched an anonymous case at the European Courts of Human Rights challenging the British government's age discrimination against gay men. It was pioneering work that paved the way for eventual parity. But, scarred by his abusive background, his life veered and he would not live to taste the liberty he initiated. Trawling archives, tracing and speaking to many people who knew Wells, including the only interview his partner has ever given, this book uncovers the man and the times. ungekürzt. Language: English. Trad’s hooves beat a loud tattoo against the hard dirt, but she could hear the noise of pursuit rising in the distance. The sound of the pursuing horses grew to a low thunder as she and Trad burst onto the main road. She leaned low over Trad’s neck as the big horse veered right and lengthened his stride. The shouting of the men grew louder. Their curses carried through the woods, echoing between the trees.Kira urged Trad to quicken his pace. They had to put more distance between them and Toril’s men. At the sound of hooves behind her, she glanced back. Through the deepening shadows she saw movement. One of the men charged onto the main road, his horse a dark shadow moving beneath him. An arrow whizzed past, low and to the left. She sucked in her breath and hunched down in the saddle, squeezing tightly with her knees as Trad ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bree Welch. I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story, Hörbuch, Digital, 212min
On March 23, 2003, Private First Class Jessica Lynch was crossing the Iraqi desert with the 507th Maintenance Company when the convoy she was traveling in was ambushed, caught in enemy crossfire. All four soldiers traveling with her died in the attack. Lynch, perhaps the most famous P.O.W. this country has ever known, was taken prisoner and held captive in an Iraqi hospital for nine days. Her rescue galvanized the nation; she became a symbol of victory, of innocence and courage, of heroism; and then, just as quickly, of deceit and manipulation. What never changed, as the nation veered wildly between these extremes of mythmaking, was her story, the events and the experiences of a nineteen-year-old girl caught up in what was and will remain the battle of her life: what she saw, what she felt, what she experienced, what she survived. I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story is the story this country has hungered for, as told by Lynch herself to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Rick Bragg. In it, she tells what really happened in the ambush; what really happened in the hospital; what really happened, from her perspective, on the night of the rescue. More than this, the collaboration between Lynch and Bragg captures who she is and where she's from: her childhood in Palestine, West Virginia, a lovely, rugged stretch of land always referred to as the hollow, where she rode horses, played softball, and was crowned Miss Congeniality at the Wirt County Fair. And it describes what happened to the Lynch family in the agony of Jessica's capture and captivity; the terror and disbelief that cascaded through an entire town at the news of her disappearance into enemy hands; the joy of her rescue; and the long work of healing and recovery that lie ahead. Jessica Lynch has won the hearts and minds of Americans. In the hands of Rick Bragg, a renowned chronicler of American lives, her tale is told at last, with grace, and care, and astonishing candor.
