2018 Serego Alighieri Possessioni Rosso Rosso del Veronese IGT
Der Serego Alighieri Possessioni Rosso ist eine Rotwein-Cuvée aus den Rebsorten Corvina, Sangiovese und einem eigenen Molinara-Klon namens Serego Alighieri. Seine Farbe ist von lebhaftem Rubinrot. Das volle und fruchtige Bukett duftet nach der Marasca-Kirsche, die aus Kroatien stammt und eine Variante der Sauerkirsche ist. Zudem vernimmt man süßliche Nuancen von Pflaumen und Zimt. Der Wein ist sehr schön vollmundig und leicht würzig. Am Gaumen zeigt er sich gut strukturiert und ausbalanciert. Sein langer Abgang ist von Kirsch- und Vanilletönen geprägt. Das Weingut, das diesen schmackhaften Wein herstellt, heißt Serego Alighieri und ist das älteste in der Valpolicella-Region. Es gehört zu den Masi Estates, auf denen immer wieder beachtliche Weine entstehen, wie der elegante Possessioni Rosso. Painted in 1563, the Renaissance picture had been immediately hailed as a masterpiece. Veronese had spread the scene across the end wall of the monastery's refectory and filled it with some 130 figures, lavishing color on the canvas to build the illusion that the biblical banquet was taking place on a terrace in sixteenth-century Venice. Once it was pulled from its frame, the canvas crossed the Mediterranean rolled on a cylinder, bound for Paris; soon after, artworks commandeered in Venice and Rome were triumphantly brought to the French capital. In 1801, the Veronese went on exhibition at the Louvre, the new public art museum founded during the Revolution, in the former palace of the French kings. As Saltzman tells the larger story of Napoleon's looting of Italian art and its role in the creation of the Louvre, she reveals defining traits of his character: his desire for greatness and his ruthlessness in getting whatever he sought. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, the Duke of Wellington and the Allies forced the French to return many of the paintings and sculptures they had seized. I love Venice but preferably well out of season. February there is nice. Not too many people on the vaporetti. The museums are not too crowded. You can see the paintings by Veronese in San Sebastiano (my favorite Venetian church) without being jostled. You can get a table in any restaurant - though Venetian food, permanently tainted by the demands of mass tourism, is never a reliably good as it is in the rest of Italy. If you want to be sure of eating well, take a day trip out of Venice to one of the nearby cities of the terra firma: Padua, Verona, Vicenza.But thank God I wasn’t in Venice for the opening of this year’s Biennale, even though I had a number of artist friends who were exhibiting there. The crowds to get into the main shows are fierce, with queues at all the main national pavilions. So is the social competition. “Have you been invited to this?” “Have you got a ticket for that?” Elbows out. Armour-plated ego at the ready.The truth is, from the numerous reports coming in on my computer, I’m obviously better off sitting at my desk, looking at a screen.
