Among the elite of Canadian pianists, Bruce Vogt is a unique and dynamic performer. He appears regularly in concert within Canada, but has also inspired audiences in England, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Norway, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, China, and Japan. Born in Southern Ontario, Bruce completed his initial musical studies with Damjana Bratuz and Anton Kuerti. Later he studied in the United States, England, Switzerland, and Italy, working with a number of celebrated musicians including Gyorgy Sebok, Louis Kentner, Fou Ts'Ong, and Dario de Rosa. Bruce Vogt's repertoire is extremely diverse, encompassing music from the sixteenth century to the present. He has consistently championed the music of contemporary composers, and has commissioned and premiered a number of new works by such Canadian luminaries as Murray Adaskin and Alfred Fisher. He is also an enthusiastic and dedicated performer on period instruments, one of his recordings features music of Robert Schumann performed on a restored 1864 Erard. His other recordings include two volumes of the music of Franz Liszt, which have established for him an enviable reputation as a Liszt interpreter. Bruce has been performing with violist Yumiko Yamamoto since 1996 in Canada and Japan. Melodiya Chamber Ensemble
The Melodiya Chamber Ensemble has been in existence for nearly 20 years. It's three main participants were soloists of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Violinist Adolf Bruk was the concertmaster of the Bolshoi Theater as well as the director of the Bolshoi Chamber Orchestra for 15 years, performing in some of the best concert halls in the former Soviet Union. The orchestra has many recordings, among which are those with renowned singers of the sixties and seventies including Eugene Nesterenko, Elena Obraztsova, and Irina Arkhipova. Harpist Olga Ortenberg-Rakitchenkov, the niece of Adolf Bruk was the principal of the Bolshoi Orchestra. In 1974 she won first place in the International Harp Competition in Geneva Switzerland. She has toured with European and Russian orchestras, performed solo recitals, and made recordings for both radio and television. Her husband, violist Sergey Rakitchenkov, was the winner of the Soviet Union-wide viola competition in 1980 and worked as principal of the viola section in the Bolshoi Theater. In December 1979, Adolf emigrated from the Soviet Union with his wife Inga and their two children. They ended up settling in the San Francisco Bay Area where Adolf became the associate concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. After being denied permission for many years, Olga, Sergey and their daughter Liza were finally allowed to immigrate in 1987. Nearly 8 years had passed, but their families were reunited at long last. In 1988 Sergey obtained a permanent position in the viola section of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, and in 1989 Olga too joined the orchestra. They continue to work there today, Sergey as Associate Principal and Olga as Principal. The idea to form Melodiya Chamber Group was a natural outcome of the longed-for family reunion. In concert, the group has performed pieces written for ensembles, one or two instruments. An expansive and varied collection of music, spanning styles and centuries, has been the result of this collaboration. Some of the works they've played are by Tomaso Vitali, Arcongello Corelli, Rameau, Marin Marais, Purcell, Telemann, J.S. Bach, J.C. Bach, W.F. Bach, C.P. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Franz Joseph Hayden, Rossini, Alessandro Rolla, Hummel, Brahms, Spohr, Schubert, Schumann, Max Bruch, Mikhail Glinka, Glazunov, Debussy, Ravel, Max Reger, Ernst Toch, Carlos Salzedo, Hindemith, Bartok, Frank Bridge, Prokofiev, Alexander Baltin, and Piazzola to name a few. The contemporary composer Dmitry Smirnov, who currently resides in England, also wrote and dedicated several compositions to the ensemble. This CD includes studio recordings as well as live performances and is the result of numerous requests of Melodiya patrons and fans. Melodiya Group apologizes for the ambient noise audible in several of the recordings, but feels that it is important to preserve the feeling of a live music atmosphere.- Shop: odax

Aria
The Bologna Cello Project came into existence in January 2009 among the historical walls of the Giovanni Battista Martini Conservatory in Bologna as a didactic course, developed on Maestro Antonio Mostacci's initiative and formed by cello students. The repertoire ranges from arrangements of famous pieces from XVI to XX century to compositions specifically dedicated to the cello ensemble. Many contemporary composers were fascinated by the group's warm sonority and they dedicated original compositions to the Bologna Cello Project. One of them is Diego Conti, violinist and composer from Pescara, who dedicated his seven variations on the theme of Heidi to the group, as well as three fantasies for a single cello and cello ensemble, the Bologna Cello Project debuted with these fantasies in a concert entirely dedicated to the support of Emergency, the project of surgeon Marcello Zavatta, who is working at a hospital in Goderich, Sierra Leone. Also, the composer Gian Paolo Luppi wrote a cello sextet with a vocal recitation. Honouring the intimate bond between the tone of the cello and the human voice, the repertoire also includes a number of pieces with a vocal soloist, the ensemble, therefore, establishes collaboration with some singers. In September 2009 the Bologna Cello Project welcomed the American violist Brett Deubner during his Italian tour and performed with him at some important shows in Emilia-Romagna.- Shop: odax

Spring & Fall
The music presented on this CD represents a selection of my songs and chamber pieces, most of which were written within the past seven years, but with a few going back as far as twenty-four. All are recorded here for the first time. The earliest works recorded here are a group of songs--'Dust of Snow,' 'My Love Is In A Light Attire,' and 'The Night Will Never Stay,'--written in 1981, during my student years. The remaining 7 songs date from 1999 and later. 'Spring and Fall' was originally sketched as a piece for treble chorus in 1999, but I revised it a couple of years later as a solo song. 'O You Whom I Often And Silently Come,' was written on the afternoon of December 31, 2000, making it my last twentieth-century work. In 2003, the song was the first winner of the Ned Rorem Award for Song Composition. 'I Sing Of A Maiden,' and 'The Angel's Song' are the first of what I hope will be a series of original Christmas Songs. All the songs are performed by Sarah Stone, mezzo-soprano, and my wife Martha Krasnican, piano. 'Prelude and Bacchanal' for violin, horn, and piano, was commissioned by hornist Brian Kilp, who premiered it during a tour of Bangkok and Singapore. He, Martha, and I have since performed it several times around the US, and the three of us appear on this recording. The title, I think, is self-explanatory. The three piano pieces were all written for Martha. 'Silent Delight' was written in 1992 shortly after we first met. The title comes from the Blake poem "Night": "The moon like a flower/In heaven's high bower,/With silent delight/Sits and smiles on the night." 'Chorale' and 'Scherzino' were both written in 2004. 'Reading Issa' for viola and harp was commissioned by harpist Vanessa Gong, who premiered it with violist Nai-Ying Liao in 2002. The title was suggested by a chance encounter with a website devoted to the haiku of Kobayashi Issa, which I came across after the piece was already under way. After completing each movement, I searched the site for an Issa poem that seemed appropriate, and placed it in the score in lieu of a title heading. I play viola on this recording, and Vanessa Gong plays harp. 'In Silence Under Many A Star' was commissioned by clarinetist John Spicknall, who premiered it in 1998 with his wife Sharilyn on violin and Martha on piano. The title comes from Whitman, it is taken from a stanza of the "Death Carol" section of his "When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom'd." Here, as in many of his poems, Whitman depicts Death as something kind, gentle, and comforting. In my composition, a recurring passage, marked "Very slow, delicate, and caressing," is identified in the score as a Danse Macabre. I play violin, Martha plays piano, and the clarinettist is Trina Gross.- Shop: odax
