Opto-Mechanical Systems Design, Fourth Edition is different in many ways from its three earlier editions: coauthor Daniel Vukobratovich has brought his broad expertise in materials, opto-mechanical design, analysis of optical instruments, large mirrors, and structures to bear throughout the book; Jan Nijenhuis has contributed a comprehensive new chapter on kinematics and applications of flexures; and several other experts in special aspects of opto-mechanics have contributed portions of other chapters. An expanded feature-a total of 110 worked-out design examples-has been added to several chapters to show how the theory, equations, and analytical methods can be applied by the reader. Finally, the extended text, new illustrations, new tables of data, and new references have warranted publication of this work in the form of two separate but closely entwined volumes. This first volume, Design and Analysis of Opto-Mechanical Assemblies, addresses topics pertaining primarily to optics smaller than 50 cm aperture. It summarizes the opto-mechanical design process, considers pertinent environmental influences, lists and updates key parameters for materials, illustrates numerous ways for mounting individual and multiple lenses, shows typical ways to design and mount windows and similar components, details designs for many types of prisms and techniques for mounting them, suggests designs and mounting techniques for small mirrors, explains the benefits of kinematic design and uses of flexures, describes how to analyze various types of opto-mechanical interfaces, demonstrates how the strength of glass can be determined and how to estimate stress generated in optics, and explains how changing temperature affects opto-mechanical assemblies.

Much of contemporary philosophy, especially in the analytical tradition, regards aesthetics as of lesser significance than epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and the philosophy of language. Yet, in Aesthetic Dimensions of Modern Philosophy, Andrew Bowie explores the idea that art and aesthetics have crucial implications for those areas of philosophy. In the modern period, the growth of warranted scientific knowledge is accompanied both by heightened concern with epistemological scepticism and a new philosophical attention to art and the beauty of nature. This suggests that modernity involves problems concerning how human beings make sense of the world that go beyond questions of knowledge, and are reflected in the arts. The relationship of art to philosophy is explored in Montaigne, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Schelling, the early German Romantics, and Hegel. This book also considers Cassirer's and the hermeneutic tradition's exploration of close links between meaning in language and in art. The work of Karl Polanyi, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Adorno, Dewey, and others is used to investigate how the modern sciences and the development of capitalism change both humankind's relations to nature and the nature of value, and so affect the role of art in human self-understanding. The aesthetic dimensions of modern philosophy can help to uncover often neglected historical shifts in how 'subjective' and 'objective' are conceived. Seeing art as a kind of philosophy, and philosophy as a kind of art, reveals unresolved tensions between the different cultural domains of the modern world and questions some of the orientation of contemporary philosophy.

Throughout our daily life, manipulation has always been received with pure disgust, utter contempt, and forgotten hatred by both the public and the individuals who have had it utilized on them. Anybody who isn't fluent in picking up vocal and body language will always be the main target for manipulation. These reactions are rightfully warranted, and people who abuse such a thing should be disregarded. However, in the words of Sun Tzu, "To know your enemy, you must become your enemy". Your manipulator will always have a hard time getting control of you if you can spot them out quickly. This audiobook will enhance your mind's keenness to not only spot these kinds of behaviors but also see who are most susceptible to enact on them and how to do them yourself.  The information in this book is backed with factual evidence and scenario, the various forms of manipulation, ways to use counter-tactics against them, the types of people who could potentially have serious mental problems (such as narcissists and borderlines, associated with these behaviors), how far successful manipulation can take you, and the great leaders who utilized it, and how manipulation is used by salespeople. Why do people manipulate others? Cited by the words of renowned psychologist Carl Jung: "The ability or the want to manipulate can sometimes stem either from the dissonance of what ego wants and what the self needs or from what the shadow dictates to feed its unsensational hunger".This book will help you engage in most activities with manipulative people, to the point where they may not notice you're playing them at the same game in a way that can help you avoid damage accrued by them. Most of the tactics focused here have to do with identifying manipulative tactics.See, knowledge is power, and you must learn what manipulative behavior looks like and how it functions. When you do, you are better prepared and suited to defend yourself against it. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Smith. An influential contributor to social theory, political theory, and political economy, his conception of liberty justified the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state control. He was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by Jeremy Bentham, although his conception of it was very different from Bentham's. Hoping to remedy the problems found in an inductive approach to science, such as confirmation bias, he clearly set forth the premises of falsification as the key component in the scientific method.Mill was also a Member of Parliament and an important figure in liberal political philosophy. John Stuart Mill’s view on liberty, which was influenced by Joseph Priestley and Josiah Warren, is that the individual ought to be free to do as he wishes unless he harms others. Individuals are rational enough to make decisions about their good being and choose any religion they want to. Government should interfere when it is for the protection of society.Mill explains, “The sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection. That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant. He cannot rightfully be compelled to do or forbear because it will be better for him to do so, because it will make him happier, because, in the opinion of others, to do so would be wise, or even right...The only part of the conduct of anyone, for which he is amenable to society, is that which concerns others. In the part which merely concerns him, his independence is, of right, absolute. Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign.” Language: English. Narrator: Jamey Lewis. The original purpose of the Select Committee's investigation was to determine how four Americans died and what measures could be taken to prevent it from happening again. More specifically: How the United States of America, the most powerful nation in the world: 1. Failed to provide adequate security for more than 30 Americans put in harm's way in one of the most dangerous places on earth 2. Failed to send or assist in any defense or rescue effort after they came under attack 3. Failed to provide an evacuation plan should they survive an ongoing attack from more than 100 terrorists with very bad intentions who were armed with automatic weapons, RPGs, and mortars. In my humble opinion, I find it difficult to understand how detractors of the investigation or any fair-minded person for that matter could say this investigation was not warranted, or even that it was a total waste of time. Unfortunately, partisan politics entered the picture. The Obama administration was facing re-election, and the Democratic Party wanted to prevent any bad news from hampering their chances to gain power in the House and Senate. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton knew that her department failed to adequately protect the diplomatic compound and the ambassador, even though countless requests for more security were denied. Of course she also did not want to ruin her potential bid to run for president in 2016 by showcasing her incompetence. On the other hand, fair-minded observers cannot overlook the fact that the Republican led Congress wanted to seize this opportunity to damage the Democratic party to not only gain control of the White House, but maintain control over the House and Senate as well. Of course, I would be remiss in not acknowledging that the Republicans were going to take advantage of this situation as much as possible. That doesn't negate the fact that it was also the right thing to do. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Leonard Bustos. "On the eve of Christmas Eve...” Paul Auster writes, "Tyler Kobe Nichols collapsed onto the sidewalk with three knife wounds in the front of his torso and one in the back.” His death soon followed. With it, the twenty-one-year-old joined the ranks of young people killed by senseless violence in America. Tyler's death warranted just two paragraphs in the New York Daily News. And yet with each death, a new story begins that is rarely if ever told; one that centers around the fallout from traumatic loss. This story, as Tyler's mother Sherma Chambers keenly observes, is generational, with no clear end in sight. Long Live King Kobe began with a mistake. Photographer Spencer Ostrander had arrived at the funeral for Tyler believing he was a victim of gun violence, and hoping to include him in an ongoing project Ostrander had created to document the lives of gun victims. Instead, he met Sherma Chambers, and a week later a collaboration, which soon included Paul Auster, had begun--one in which a pair of strangers would join a family in their sorrow. Thanks to the generosity of the entire Nichols/Chambers family, Long Live King Kobe invites us to join them in their intimate grief in the weeks that followed Tyler's death. The family's response to his murder, including their creation of a foundation dedicated to counteracting street violence with love, is one that presents their tragedy as a means for our society to grow. Long Live King Kobe offers a privileged journey into the power of community for all who have felt outrage, confusion, sadness, and deep despair at the epidemic of violence in our country. It also provides reason to hope. The Long Live King Kobe Foundation, started by Sherma Chambers, will support nonviolence initiatives to keep youth safe. Proceeds from this book will benefit the foundation.
