Death and the Devil , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 62min
Death and the Devil: A Dance of Death in Three Scenes by Frank Wedekind. Translated by Samuel A. Eliot and Denis Daly. Cast: The Marquis Casti-Piani - John Burlinson; Fräulein Elfriede von Malchus - Amanda Friday; Herr König - Mark Crowle-Groves; Lisiska - Leanne Yau. Stage directions read by Denis Daly. Audio edited by Denis Daly. This play forms part of a tetralogy which focuses on one of Wedekind's obsessive themes: the destructive interplay between primal sexual urges and social convention. Each play revolves around a powerful young female character, who has the power to control and captivate men, but who in turn is destroyed by the exercise of that power. In this play, the dominant female is Fräulein Elfriede von Malchus, an idealistic crusader who visits a brothel operated by the cynical impresario Casti-Piani in order to rescue a young woman who has fallen into his clutches. In a perverse way, Wedekind's plays are morality tales, in which he gives a new twist to the biblical admonition; "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." In most cases, when characters finally do become aware of who they are and what they have done, the knowledge leads to their destruction. In Death and the Devil, Casti-Piani kills himself when he learns that prostitution can actually provide its victims with a path to moral glorification. ungekürzt. Language: English. Control: Exposing the Truth About Guns , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 299min
When our founding fathers secured the Constitutional “right of the people to keep and bear arms”, they also added the admonition that this right shall not be infringed. It is the only time this phrase appears in the Bill of Rights. So why aren’t more people listening? History has proven that guns are essential to self-defense and liberty - but tragedy is a powerful force and has led many to believe that guns are the enemy, that the Second Amendment is outdated, and that more restrictions or outright bans on firearms will somehow solve everything. They are wrong. In Control, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. In doing so, he takes on and debunks the common myths and outright lies that are often used to vilify guns and demean their owners: The Second Amendment is about muskets.... Gun control works in other countries.... Forty percent of all guns are sold without background checks.... More guns mean more murder.... Mass shootings are becoming more common.... These awful massacres are unique to america.... No civilian needs a “weapon of war” like the ar-15.... Armed guards in schools do nothing, just look at Columbine.... Stop fearmongering, no one is talking about taking your guns away. Backed by hundreds of sources, this handbook gives everyone who cares about the Second Amendment the indisputable facts they need to reclaim the debate, defeat the fear, and take back their natural rights. ungekürzt. Three Feet from Gold: Turn Your Obstacles Into Opportunities , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 328min
In 1908, an unknown writer was chosen by Andrew Carnegie, the richest man in the world, to undertake a very special project - interview the most influential and wealthy leaders to determine the common denominator among them for attaining success. That young man was Napoleon Hill, and the book that grew from those interviews was Think and Grow Rich, the bible of personal development and the 20th best-selling book in the history of the world. Exactly 100 years later the Napoleon Hill Foundation selected two gifted individuals to follow in Hill's historic footsteps and modernize his classic work by interviewing the most celebrated and gifted minds of our modern era. Sharon Lechter and Greg Reid focused their query on a core component of the Think and Grow Rich philosophy by asking one simple question: What inspired you despite overwhelming challenges, dismal odds and discouraging setback to persevere on your quest? Now, more than ever, we need a reminder that in order to achieve greatness our determination must be more powerful that any obstacles confronted. Great pains are prerequisites to great gains. There are no shortcuts. First there is a dream, and then there is struggle followed by victory. The admonition is to not be a footnote in history like R. U. Darby. Who was he? He was a miner during the California Gold Rush who threw in the towel and sold his claim for a hundred dollars. The man who bought the claim dug only 'three feet' before striking one of the richest gold veins in history. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan John Miller. Being with Dying: Contemplative Practices and Teachings, Hörbuch, Digital, 447min
On his deathbed Plato was asked to summarize his life's work. He replied, "Practice dying." In the 2,000 years since Plato offered this wise admonition, we have developed many practices associated with living. But what of the practices associated with dying? Being with Dying is a response to this question: an approach to death that is kind, open, and dignified and that allows us to explore the meaning of death in the experience of our own lives and through the lives of others. Founded by Joan Halifax, Being with Dying began as a project to help health-care professionals and their patients learn to see death and know life in terms of compassion and awakening. Distilled from this influential program, the Being with Dying audio learning course combines Eastern and Western psychology, philosophy, and contemplative practices from many spiritual traditions. This innovative, hands-on approach has taught medical professionals, social workers, clergy, community activists, and spiritual seekers an elegant path for taking the fear out of the dying experience. In gently caring for the dying, we also learn to more wisely care for the living - and for life itself. Often in our culture, life is equated with success and death with failure. Being with Dying honestly examines death and dying not in terms of medical success or failure - but as a possibility for awakening. Join Joan Halifax and learn key practices for creating a calm, mindful, sacred space where life and death are brought into the full light of awareness. Language: English. Narrator: Joan Halifax. Jehoshaphat: Worldliness, Book 17 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 55min
Jehoshaphat: Worldliness looks at the life of this Old Testament king of Judah and encourages us to examine ourselves in the light of his mistakes. When a Christian enters into connection with the world, he lays himself open to be "persuaded" by the world - to enter upon an unchristian course of action. "Keep thyself pure" is a valuable admonition for us all. "Come out from among them, and be ye separate." Let us ask ourselves, can our association with the world go hand in hand with our fellowship with God? This is really the question. The man who conforms to the world will be the enemy of Christ and the enemy of Christ's people. It cannot be otherwise. "The friendship of the world is enmity with God; whosoever, therefore, will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." How fully was this proven in the case of King Jehoshaphat! He became the friend and companion of Ahab, one of the most evil kings in history. The beginning of evil is like the letting out of water. Small beginnings lead to fearful results. Dear Christian listener. Let us, with the Lord's help, endeavor to shake off the world's influence and purge ourselves from its ways. We have no idea how insidiously it creeps in upon us. "Take heed what ye do." "Come out, and be separate." We cannot, by any possibility, mix ourselves up with the world and allow ourselves to be governed and led by its maxims and principles without suffering in our own souls and marring our testimony. ungekürzt. Princess of Wands , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 689min
Audie Award Nominee, Fantasy 2013 Special: distinguished by some unusual quality... Circumstances: a piece of evidence that indicates the probability or improbability of an event... Barbara Everette, a homemaker living in a small town in Mississippi, had the perfect life. Perfect husband, perfect children, perfect house, perfect Christian Faith. She cooked and cleaned perfectly and managed all of the chores of the modern suburbanite, toting the kids, running the PTA, teaching kung-fu in the local dojo... perfectly. But perfection has a price, and the day came when Barbara snapped. She simply had to have "one weekend off". God had to grant her that much. It said no where that she was a slave. Waving goodbye to her hapless, entirely undomestic husband, she set out on the quest for a weekend of peace and maybe some authentic Cajun food. Detective Sergeant Kelly Lockhart, New Orleans Homicide, had a perfect record on his latest case: not a single suspect. And there should be at least five or six, given the DNA traces on the many bodies. Furthermore, his sole really outstanding clue, a mysterious fish scale, had disappeared into the recesses of the FBI Crime Lab. But the old fortune-teller was sending him into the bayou, down in the land of authentic Cajun food, on the track of a mysterious pimp with the admonition to "watch for the Princess". Or die. Barbara and Kelly were heading to a rendezvous that might be fate and might reveal the hand of God. There was more cooking in the swamps than jambalaya. Unknown to either, the mystery of the Bayou Ripper had Special Circumstances. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Suzy Jackson. Personal Struggles, Conflict and Spiritual Growth, Hörbuch, Digital, 148min
In our struggles, we might become uneasy when we experience strong emotions. Especially anger. In Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, he says: “Be angry and sin not.” How do we live this Christian admonition? How do we attain spiritual growth in struggle, in conflict, and with feelings that overwhelm us? Carole Riley, C.D.P., Ph.D., looks at conflict as a Eucharistic engagement. When we apply the skills and techniques she discusses in this presentation, we may better understand the mystery of life and reach harmony. Talk 1: “Personal Struggles”, provides the basics of conflict assessment. Conflict happens because a situation is frustrating. Riley covers issues of personal identity, cultural outlook, personality styles and our perception of God. She says that naming the conflict is an opportunity for spiritual growth, and she discusses dimensions that affect choices in our struggles. We can feel hurt and angry, but as God’s gentleness permeates us, we can choose to wish good things for another. In Talk 2, “Resolving Workplace Conflicts”, Riley looks at different leadership and resolution styles in group situations. To facilitate spiritual awakening, she encourages us to acknowledge our blind spots and appreciate people’s differences. She covers guidelines for resolving group conflict, examines threats to collaboration and discusses roles of individuals in the process. Conflict is healthy when we listen with our hearts, break free of “shoulds” and become pure of heart. Then, fear of struggle will be turned over to God and engagement with life and conflict becomes a holy process. Riley offers questions for us to examine our own conflicts and explore recommended skills. Language: English. Narrator: Sr. Carole Riley, Ph.D.. Letters From Skye: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 494min
A sweeping story told in letters, spanning two continents and two world wars, Jessica Brockmole’s atmospheric debut novel captures the indelible ways that people fall in love, and celebrates the power of the written word to stir the heart. March 1912: 24-year-old Elspeth Dunn, a published poet, has never seen the world beyond her home on Scotland’s remote Isle of Skye. So she is astonished when her first fan letter arrives, from a college student, David Graham, in far-away America. As the two strike up a correspondence - sharing their favorite books, wildest hopes, and deepest secrets - their exchanges blossom into friendship, and eventually into love. But as World War I engulfs Europe and David volunteers as an ambulance driver on the Western front, Elspeth can only wait for him on Skye, hoping he’ll survive. June 1940: At the start of World War II, Elspeth’s daughter, Margaret, has fallen for a pilot in the Royal Air Force. Her mother warns her against seeking love in wartime, an admonition Margaret doesn’t understand. Then, after a bomb rocks Elspeth’s house, and letters that were hidden in a wall come raining down, Elspeth disappears. Only a single letter remains as a clue to Elspeth’s whereabouts. As Margaret sets out to discover where her mother has gone, she must also face the truth of what happened to her family long ago. Sparkling with charm and full of captivating period detail, Letters from Skye is a testament to the power of love to overcome great adversity, and marks Jessica Brockmole as a stunning new literary voice. ungekürzt. The Right Time , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 549min
Filled with heartbreak and betrayal, triumph and fulfillment, The Right Time is an intimate, richly rewarding novel about pursuing one's passion and succeeding beyond one's wildest dreams. Abandoned by her mother at age seven, Alexandra Winslow takes solace in the mysteries she reads with her devoted father - and soon she is writing them herself, slowly graduating to dark, complex crime stories that reflect skill, imagination, and talent far beyond her years. After her father's untimely death, at 14 Alex is taken in by the nuns of a local convent, where she finds 26 mothers to take the place of the one she lost, and the time and encouragement to pursue her gift. Alex writes in every spare moment, gripped by the plots and themes and characters that fill her mind. Midway through college, she has finished a novel - and manages to find a seasoned agent and then a publisher. But as she climbs the ladder of publishing success, she resolutely adheres to her father's admonition: men read crime thrillers by men only - and so Alexandra Winslow publishes under the pseudonym Alexander Green, her true identity known only to those closest to her and creating a double life that isolates her. Her secret life as the mysterious and brilliantly successful Alexander Green - and her own life as a talented young woman - expose her to the envious, the arrogant, and Hollywood players who have no idea who she really is. Always, the right time to open up seems just out of reach and would cost her dearly. Once her double life and fame are established, the price of the truth is always too high. ungekürzt.
