The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell burners, Earth joined a vast empire that spanned the Milky Way. Our only worthwhile trade goods are our infamous mercenary legions, elite troops we sell to the highest alien bidder. In the fourth book of the series, James McGill is up for promotion. Not everyone is happy about that, and McGill must prove he's worth his stripes. Deployed to a strange, alien planet outside the boundaries of the Galactic Empire, he's caught up in warfare and political intrigue. Earth expands, the Cephalopod Kingdom launches ships to stop us, and a grand conspiracy emerges among the upper ranks of the Hegemony military. In Machine World McGill faces an entirely new kind of alien life, Galactic prosecution, and thousands of relentless squid troopers. He lives and dies in the falling ashes of the empire, a man of unique honor at the dawn of humanity's resurgence. Machine World is a military science fiction novel by best-selling author B. V. Larson. (To find the first book in the series, search for Steel World by B. V. Larson.) ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Boyett. When you're cooking, you're a chemist! Every time you follow or modify a recipe you are experimenting with acids and bases, emulsions and suspensions, gels and foams. In your kitchen you denature proteins, crystallize compounds, react enzymes with substrates, and nurture desired microbial life while suppressing harmful microbes. And unlike in a laboratory, you can eat your experiments to verify your hypotheses. In Culinary Reactions, author Simon Quellen Field explores the chemistry behind the recipes you follow every day. How does altering the ratio of flour, sugar, yeast, salt, butter, and water affect how high bread rises? Why is whipped cream made with nitrous oxide rather than the more common carbon dioxide? And why does Hollandaise sauce fall for "clarified" butter? This easy-to-follow primer even includes recipes to demonstrate the concepts being discussed, including Whipped Creamsicle Topping (a foam), Cherry Dream Cheese (a protein gel), and Lemonade with Chameleon Eggs (an acid indicator). It even shows you how to extract DNA from a Halloween pumpkin. You'll never look at your graduated cylinders, Bunsen burners, and beakers the same way again. ungekürzt. Language: English. Charcoal is the main source of energy for over 90% of the population. Its production generates little income and negligible taxes. Its production remains unsustainable. To remedy this, it is necessary to identify the factors associated with its sustainability. A survey was conducted among 40 charcoal producers in Kasenga. The major socio-demographic factors negatively influence deforestation. Indeed, all the charcoal burners had a low level of education, making it difficult to learn new carbonization technologies. The study showed, on the one hand, enormous ease of access to the resource and, on the other hand, a strong mismatch between the ecological value of the resource and the economic value of the product. Indeed, the grinding stones used are small (40 bags of 65Kg per month for a unit price not exceeding 5$). In addition, the technology used affects the low yield (less than 18%) as well as the income. It is important to develop strategies ranging from controlled felling to reforestation through improved carbonization techniques in order to make the activity profitable.

In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers…someone had to do their dirty work for them, their fighting and dying. I, James McGill, was born in 2099 on the fringe of the galaxy. When Hegemony Financial denied my loan applications, I was kicked out of the university and I turned to the stars. My first campaign involved the invasion of a mineral-rich planet called Cancri-9, better known as Steel World. The attack didn't go well, and now Earth has entered a grim struggle for survival. Humanity's mercenary legions go to war in Steel World, best-selling author B. V. Larson's latest science fiction novel. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Boyett. The murder of Millroad Catholic Academy's resident genius Aaron Nguyen shuts down student life at the boarding school in rural North Carolina... for about a week. With the resilience of youth, the student body bounces back, and the memory of murder is nothing but a streamer of caution tape fluttering in the breeze. Unfortunately for them, Aaron's spirit has some resilience as well. The school priest's exorcism fails, and before long Aaron is breathing chills down the students' necks and hurling Bunsen burners at nuns. Georgia Collins doesn't give a shit about ghosts. All she wants is a story to prove her underground school news blog is more than a gossip column, closure on her one-sided relationship with her best friend Hiroki, and a vanilla latte. She wasn't expecting Aaron Nguyen's death to be anything more than a cold spot in the science hall, but since Hiroki has the curse of Spectral Sight, he is the only person who can see and speak to Aaron. As the ghost's demands for attention become increasingly violent, Hiroki wants Georgia to help him investigate the crime, claiming that Aaron isn't likely to budge until his killers are caught. Still hoping for spontaneous romantic combustion, she agrees to help bring Aaron's murderers to justice and set the vengeful spirit free... but it's not quite the close encounter she's hoping for. ungekürzt. Revenge isn't the only dish served cold....  Ali Reynolds' longtime friend, Taser-carrying nun Sister Anselm, rushes to the bedside of a young pregnant woman hospitalized for severe injuries after she was hit by a car on a deserted Arizona highway. The girl had been running away from The Family, a polygamous cult with no patience for those who try to leave its ranks. Something about her strikes a chord in Sister Anselm, reminding her of a case she worked years before, when another young girl wasn't so lucky. Meanwhile married life agrees with Ali. But any hopes that she and her husband, B. Simpson, will finally slow down and relax now that they've tied the knot are dashed when Ali's new daughter-in-law approaches her, desperate for help. The girl's grandmother, Betsy, is in danger: She's been receiving anonymous threats, and someone even broke into her home and turned on the gas burners in the middle of the night. But the local police think the elderly woman's just not as sharp as she used to be. While Ali struggles to find a way to protect Betsy before it's too late, Sister Anselm needs her help as well, and the two race the clock to uncover the secrets that The Family has hidden for so long...before someone comes back to bury them forever. From the New York Times best-selling author hailed for her "inimitable, take-no-prisoners style" (Kirkus Reviews), Cold Betrayal forces Ali to confront the face of evil and the women who are being hunted.  ungekürzt.
