Requiem for the American Dream: The Principles of Concentrated Wealth and Power , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 234min
Noam Chomsky is widely regarded as the most influential thinker of our time, but never before has he devoted a major book to one topic: income inequality. "During the Great Depression, things were much worse than they are today, but there was an expectation that things were going to get better. There was a real sense of hopefulness. There isn't today.... Inequality is really unprecedented. In terms of total inequality, it's like the worst periods in American history. But if you refine it more closely, the inequality comes from the extreme wealth in a tiny sector of the population, a fraction of 1 percent.... Not only is it extremely unjust in itself, inequality has highly negative consequences on the society as a whole because the very fact of inequality has a corrosive, harmful effect on democracy."(Noam Chomsky, in Requiem for the American Dream) Requiem for the American Dream is not an essay collection but an entire work of some 70,000 words, based on four years of interviews with Chomsky by the editors. Chomsky considers these to be his final, long-form documentary interviews. It is a book that makes Chomsky's breadth and depth accessible and at the same time gives us his most powerful political ideas with unprecedented, breathtaking directness. It will go down as one of his greatest and most lasting contributions. Requiem for the American Dream is being produced in tandem with the film of the same name that was recently released in selected theaters to rave reviews and standing ovations. It will be on Netflix and touring colleges prior to the book's release. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Donald Corren. The Symphonies of Beethoven, Hörbuch, Digital, 1452min
Ludwig van Beethoven is justifiably acclaimed as one of the most revered composers in the history of Western music-a genius once characterized as a "Titan, wrestling with the gods." There is no better way for you to understand the full impact of that description than to not only listen to all nine of his magnificent symphonies, but to do so with a full understanding of what this great composer was saying and the circumstances that drove him up to and beyond what had once been considered the limits of musical expression. The 32 lectures that make up this detailed introduction to Beethoven explores each of his symphonies in depth, explaining the gifts of musical communication that made this composer unique. Even without any previous musical training, you'll be able to grasp the absolute directness that made his work so accessible, the sheer emotional power that could never be ignored, and the ways in which his ideas were revolutionary on every level. Beginning with an introduction to Beethoven the man and the musical and societal forces that shaped his development, you'll explore his breathtaking innovations: harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, formal, dramatic, self-expressive, and emotional. And you'll come to understand how and why this man was able to lead music into a totally new era as he dispensed with the restraint of 18th-century Classicism to usher in the era of romantic self-expression - even as his own ability to even hear what he was creating was progressively and tragically vanishing. The Big Tease: A Femdom Tease Fantasy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 29min, (USK 18)
It can't be cheating if there's no touching involved. Can it? His young, flirtatious neighbor April is full of life, dressed to tempt, and at his doorstep. "Can I just have some sugar?" must be an innocent request. Yet, even the simplest situations are wrapped up in moral turmoil and mental - and bodily - anguish when his wife's wishes and warnings are continually playing in his mind. But "Queen Nag" isn't home right now, and she must want her husband to play the part of a neighborly gentleman. Right? He's an expert at fooling himself, unable to believe the tight-bodied temptation standing in his own home is anything other than innocent - and just happening to be so petite, pert, and less dressed by the minute. The hunt to locate the sweet sugar April begs to borrow is on, placing this poor husband in one agonizing predicament after another. His arousal is growing to impossibly hard to hide, while April is bending, twisting, and revealing in all manner of provocative ways, more of what's beneath her scant clothes. It's April's constant chatter, her directness, and her game of feigning innocence that are the most dangerous of all. He continually fails to believe that his friendly neighbor knows what her words, confessions, and descriptions do to him, as she shares just what she does with her boyfriend behind closed doors and how she just can't help the effect she has on the opposite sex. Presumed innocence can be the most arousing temptation of all. When April finally leaves, he's relinquished more than just a package of sugar. His unwitting introduction to denial erotica and temptation. Her expert, ruthless teasing. In other words, more and more of us are starting to "wake up" spiritually - to discover entirely new identities beyond the usual sense of who we think we are. But what is spiritual awakening really? How does it happen - and what are the consequences? Is it possible to attune to this dimension of experience at any moment? Clapton: The Autobiography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 631min
Eric Clapton is far more than a rock star. Like Dylan and McCartney, he is an icon and a living legend. He has sold tens of millions of records, played sell-out concerts all over the world, and been central to the significant musical developments of his era. His guitar playing has seen him hailed as "God". Tracks such as "Layla", "Sunshine of Your Love", "Wonderful Tonight", and "Tears in Heaven" have become anthems for generations of music fans. Now, for the first time, Eric tells the story of his personal and professional journeys in this pungent, witty, and painfully honest autobiography. Eric was born illegitimate in 1945 and raised by his grandparents. He never knew his father, and until the age of nine believed his absentee mother to be his sister. In his teens his solace was the guitar, and he soon became a cult hero in the club circuits of Britain. With the foundation of the world's first super-group, Cream, in 1966, he became a world superstar. But the rock-star lifestyle has had a darker side. In more than 40 years at the forefront of his profession, he has twice survived near fatal addictions to drugs and alcohol, the death of his four-year-old son, the deaths of friends such as Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon, the break-up of marriage, and the disintegration of relationships with a succession of beautiful women. These are the memoirs of a survivor, someone who has reached the pinnacle of success, who has had it all, but whose demons have never left him. At the age of 62, Eric is now ready to tell his story as it is, hiding nothing, with a directness and searing honesty that will make this book one of the most compelling memoirs of our time. ungekürzt. The Talk: Helping Your Kids Navigate Sex in the Real World , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 167min
Are you having a hard time talking to your kid about sex? Join the club. Alice Dreger, PhD, brings her unique sense of humor and refreshing directness to bear on this landmine of a subject, laying out clear methods that emphasize respect, health, and happiness. After Dreger's live tweeting of her son's abstinence sex ed class went viral, Dreger was asked by many parents how she had managed to raise a 14-year-old so comfortable talking about sex - comfortable enough even to challenge sex ed teachers when they presented misinformation. The Talk is a response to those questions. In it, Dreger explains how you can engage your children in productive conversations about sexual anatomy, sexual behaviors, sexual responsibility, and sexual pleasure and how you can do it in a nonshaming fashion that will support not only your child's well-being but also your long-term relationship with your child. Using the humor and clarity for which she is known, Dreger provides the basic information you need to understand sex development, gender identity, and erotic feelings and behaviors while also giving you a clear method for talking with children about difficult subjects like sex. The Talk gives you examples of how to answer children's questions and even explains how to recover if you screw up a conversation about sex. Whether your child is a preschooler or a teenager, The Talk will help you go forward with more information and less fear. Alice Dreger, PhD, is an historian of medicine, science, and sexuality and an award-winning writer. Her essays on sex have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, WIRED, Slate, The L.A. Times, The Chicago Tribune, Pacific Standard, Fathering Magazine, and Psychology Today, and she has appeared as a sex expert on dozens of broadcast programs, including Oprah, CNN International, NPR's All Things Considered, and Savage Lovecast. The Concept of Anxiety: A Simple Psychologically Oriented Deliberation in View of the Dogmatic Problem of Hereditary Sin , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 366min
This first new translation of Kierkegaard's masterwork in a generation brings an essential work of modern philosophy to vivid life. Although Soren Kierkegaard's death in the fall of 1855 foreshadowed a lasting split between conservative Christians and young contemporaries who saw him as a revolutionary thinker, it was not until the turn of the 20th century - and beyond the borders of his native Denmark - that his lasting significance came to be felt. By transcending distinctions of genre, Kierkegaard brought traditionally separated disciplines to bear on deep human concerns and was able, through his profound self-insight, to uncover the strategies with which we try to deal with them. As a result, he is hailed today as no less than the father of modern psychology and existentialism. While the majority of Kierkegaard's work leading up to The Concept of Anxiety dealt with the intersection of faith and knowledge, here the renowned Danish philosopher turns to the perennial question of sin and guilt. First published in 1844, this concise treatise identified - long before Freud - anxiety as a deep-seated human state, one that embodies the endless struggle with our own spiritual identities. Ably synthesizing human insights with Christian dogma, Kierkegaard's "psychological deliberation" suggests that our only hope in overcoming anxiety is not through "powder and pills" but by embracing it with open arms. Indeed, for Kierkegaard, it is only through our experiences with anxiety that we are able to become truly aware of ourselves and the freedoms and limitations of our own existence. While Kierkegaard's Danish prose is surprisingly rich, previous translations - the most recent in 1980 - have tended either to deaden its impact by being excessively literal or to furnish it with a florid tone foreign to its original directness. In this new edition, Alastair Hannay re-creates its natural rhythm in a way that will finally allow this overlooked ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Rapkin. Omar Khayyam , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 51min
John Pollen (1855-1923) was an official in the Indian Civil Service. A keen linguist, he learned Russian, Esperanto, and Persian and in 1915 published an English translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. His collection contains 158 quatrains and includes a set of seven prefatory quatrains by Andrew Lang and a foreword by the Aga Khan. John Pollen was a keen activist against discrimination against Indians, and his translation of the Rubaiyat was published to raise funds for the welfare of Indian soldiers engaged in World War I. In the foreword, the Aga Khan wrote: 'The charm of the Rubayiat, which lies in the intensely human spirit pervading them, is enhanced by the poet's inimitable directness of expression, his terse and incisive phrases and a simple grace of style, with that unrivalled and untranslatable music of words to which the sonorous language of Persia peculiarly lends itself. To reproduce these subtle features of the original in a translation is not an easy undertaking. FitzGerald succeeded in a remarkable degree in bringing out the spirit of Omar's quatrains in his famous translation; which in some respects transcends the beauty of the original, but to achieve this end he had to diverge from the letter of the Rubayiat as well as from the sequence of the verses. Dr. John Pollen in his more faithful translation has accomplished a task of greater difficulty, and has done justice both to the letter and to the spirit of the original. In its simple and attractive garb the version now offered to the public, for the benefit of the Indi an soldiers who are now laying down their lives for the Empire on the battlefields of three continents, deserves to find a place on the bookshelves of the numerous admirers of the poet in the English-speaking world.' ungekürzt. Known and Unknown: A Memoir, Hörbuch, Digital, 830min
Like Donald Rumsfeld, Known and Unknown pulls no punches. With the same directness that defined his career in public service, Rumsfeld's memoir is filled with previously undisclosed details and insights about the Bush administration, 9/11, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It also features Rumsfeld's unique and often surprising observations on eight decades of history: his experiences growing up during the Depression and World War II, his time as a Naval aviator; his service in Congress starting at age 30; his cabinet-level positions in the Nixon and Ford White Houses; his assignments in the Reagan administration; and his years as a successful business executive in the private sector. Rumsfeld addresses the challenges and controversies of his illustrious career, from the unseating of the entrenched House Republican leader in 1965, to helping the Ford administration steer the country away from Watergate and Vietnam, to bruising battles over transforming the military for the 21st century, to the war in Iraq, to confronting abuse at Abu Ghraib and allegations of torture at Guantanamo Bay. Along the way, he offers his plainspoken, first-hand views and often humorous and surprising anecdotes about some of the world's best-known figures, from Margaret Thatcher to Saddam Hussein, from Henry Kissinger to Colin Powell, from Elvis Presley to Dick Cheney, and each American president from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George W. Bush. Rumsfeld relies not only on his memory but also on previously unreleased and recently declassified documents. Thousands of pages of documents not yet seen by the public will be made available on an accompanying website. Known and Unknown delivers both a fascinating narrative for today's listeners and an unprecedented resource for tomorrow's historians. Donald Rumsfeld is donating his proceeds from sales of Known and Unknown to military charities supported by the Rumsfeld Foundation. Language: English. Narrator: Donald Rumsfeld.
