Lourdes: The History and Legacy of France's Most Famous Christian Pilgrimage Site , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 90min
They say that judgment does not exist in Lourdes. Once one sets foot on this hallowed soil, all barriers of race, social status, background, and religious differences cease to exist. One is no more than a humble soul in search of a renewal of one's connection to God. In a statement released to the French press in mid-August of 2008, Father Jacques Nieuviarts guaranteed the following: "Those who touch the rock at the grotto in Lourdes.... Perhaps they are praying to be imbued with the strength of this rock. Those who drink the water from the fountain feel that their inner thirst is being quenched, that they have been changed, and that the water has purified them.... In lighting the candle, they open themselves up to the clarity that comes from God, and when they depart leaving a burning candle, their prayer continues in union with the prayers of all the other people who have placed their lighted candles at the grotto...." Given these promises of inner peace and spiritual awakenings, not to mention the countless cases - both claimed and "verified" - of miraculous healing this supernatural town is teeming with, it comes as no surprise that this once unassuming town has now become the second most popular tourist destination in France, following Paris. Over the years, this formerly quaint, but rinky-dink, gray-roofed cottage town has more than succeeded in putting itself on the map through its mystical sanctuaries built on miracles, but how exactly did they achieve such a designation? And how much truth, if any at all, is there in these so-called miracles? Lourdes: The History and Legacy of France's Most Famous Christian Pilgrimage Site chronicles the remarkable history of the site and the religious influence it has had over the centuries. ungekürzt. France's Yellow Vests (eBook, ePUB)
The most comprehensive book on the Yellow Vests, and from the journalist who knows them the best. The second is a complete analysis of the causes and victories of the truly progressive and totally misrepresented Yellow Vest movement. With over 100 quotations from actual, marching Yellow Vests no book gives their view such pride of place - decide for yourself. France 1940: Defending the Republic , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 256min
In this revisionist account of France's crushing defeat in 1940, Philip Nord argues that the nation's downfall has long been misunderstood. Nord assesses France's diplomatic and military preparations for war with Germany, its conduct of the war once the fighting began, and the political consequences of defeat on the battlefield. Ultimately, he finds that the longstanding view that France's collapse was due to military unpreparedness and a decadent national character is unsupported by fact. Nord reveals that the Third Republic was no worse prepared and its military failings no less dramatic than those of the United States and other Allies in the early years of the war. What was unique in France was the betrayal by military and political elites who abandoned the Republic and supported the reprehensible Vichy takeover. Why then have historians and politicians ever since interpreted the defeat as a judgment on the nation as a whole? Why has the focus been on the failings of the Third Republic and not on elite betrayal? The author examines these questions in a fascinating conclusion. ungekürzt. Language: English. Raymond Depardon, Communes
Communes is a photographic essay by Raymond Depardon exploring the villages of France's Mediterranean inland region. Its 80 black-and-white photographs were taken by Depardon in the summer of 2020, after France's first lockdown, and cover the departments of Aveyron, Lozère, Gard and Hérault. These villages are timeless havens of peace, where tranquility and cool prevail. Witnesses to history, they were threatened by the 'Nant concession', a shale gas extraction project, but the inhabitants protested and the project was abandoned in 2015. The villages, with their cobbled streets, old houses with jagged facades and rustic construction, are once again thriving. The photographs are accompanied by a text by Salomé Berlioux, president of the association Chemins d'Avenirs, an association that accompanies and promotes thousands of young people from isolated areas. Berlioux is also the author of Les Invisibles de la République. Comment sauver la jeunesse de la France périphérique? (Robert Laffont, 2019) and Nos campagnes suspendes. La France périphérique face à la crise (Editions de l'Observatoire, 2020).- Shop: buecher
