The Eighth Veil: A Jerusalem Mystery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 541min
The Eighth Veil is a mystery set in first-century Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles.A murdered servant girl is found in the palace of King Herod Antipas. The prefect, Pontius Pilate, is in attendance. The populace has already been buzzing over the brutal death of one of their prophets, John, known familiarly as the Baptizer, and scandal is in the air. Pilate wants no trouble and insists that there be an independent investigation into the murder. But Antipas will have none of Pilate’s men in the palace, and Pilate doesn’t trust Antipas. So Pilate turns to Gamaliel, the chief rabbi and head of the Sanhedrin, and coerces him to do the detective work. Gamaliel is a Talmudic scholar, not a sleuth, and he at first struggles; however, he is soon won over to the assignment as he learns more of the dead girl’s background and that of the other major players in the drama, particularly Antipas’ foster brother, Menahem. Soon, Gamaliel, in Sherlockian fashion, begins to fit the pieces together, or, as his “Watson” Loukas says, strips the veils from his “personal Salome.” Pilate, in spite of his impatience with the pace and direction of the investigation, is rewarded when it turns out that the girl is not the mere servant that everyone had assumed. Meanwhile, the Battle of Actium and the fascinating histories of Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Herod the Great, Mark Antony, and Augustus Caesar become critically entwined with the investigation. And the figure of Jesus, the rabbi from Nazareth, with his ragged band of enthusiasts and his habit of annoying Caiaphas, the High Priest, moves enigmatically in the background. ungekürzt. What Is Truth - Part 1 & 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 68min
Christianity is the fulfillment of Judaism, the fulfillment of all that was prophesied in the Old Testament. This week the Christian world celebrates Passover, the triumphal march into Jerusalem - the trial, the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Let me share these events with you as they are seen through the eyes of one who has experienced them. In the 18th chapter of the Book of John, Pilate said: "So you are a king?" and Jesus replied: "You say that I am, but my kingdom is not of this world. For this I was born. For this I came into the world, to bear witness to the truth." Then Pilate asked: "What is truth?" and when there was no response, Pilate left, saying: "I find nothing in this man worth condemnation." Having already claimed: I am the truth, and my word is truth, here we find Jesus making the claim: I came to bear witness to the truth. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Clay Lomakayu. Pontius Pilatus
How on earth could the governor of a rather small Roman province obtain a prominent position in the Christian creed? Who was this Pontius Pilate, now inscribed in the »cultural memory« of Christianity? He was not only a Roman official in the administrative apparatus of the Roman Empire responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus, but his name is also inseparably bound to Jesus' death, which for Christians is the eschatological event of the world's salvation. Is Pilate a hangman and a saint at the same time? The New Testament presents him as a multifaceted personality. This book elaborates various aspects of Pilate's characterization both as a historical figure and with regard to his place in a Christian reading of the Jesus story. It seeks to demonstrate in which way the memory of Pilate contributes to a grounded understanding of the Christian faith.- Shop: buecher

Select Works of Apocrypha (40 Books) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1749min
Apocrypha is a Greek word that means "something hidden". The term is often used for writings of the church that are not generally accepted as authentic or inspired. It is unclear what the motivation was for writing many of these works. But often they fill in gaps of information where the Bible is silent, such as the lives of Mary and Joseph (Protoevangelium of James); the early childhood of Jesus (Gospel of Thomas); and the ministry of various disciples (Acts). The dates of these works is uncertain, but a rough estimated is provided by scholars. The following works are included: Apocalypse of Peter (c. 130) Protoevangelium of James (c. 150). Acts of Paul and Thecla (c. 180) Gospel of Peter (c. 190) The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs (c. 192) Acts of Peter and Paul (c. 200) Gospel of Thomas (c. 200) Acts of Thomas (c. 240) Acts of Thaddaeus (c. 250) Acts of Andrew (c. 260) Acts of Xanthippe and Polyxena (c. 270) Acts of John Acts of Philip (c. 350) Apocalypse of Paul (c. 380) Gospel of Nicodemus The Doctrine of Addai (c. 400) Assumption of Mary (c. 400) History of Joseph the Carpenter (c. 400) Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew (c. 400) Acts of Barnabas (c. 500) Acts of Bartholomew (c. 500) Acts and Martyrdom of St. Matthew the Apostle (c. 550) Arabic Gospel of the Infancy of the Saviour (c. 600) Avenging of the Saviour (c. 700) Apocalypse of John Apocalypse of Moses Apocalypse of Esdras Testament of Abraham Narrative of Zosimus Gospel of the Nativity of Mary Narrative of Joseph of Arimathea Report of Pontius Pilate Letter of Pontius Pilate Giving Up of Pontius Pilate Death of Pilate Apocalypse of the Virgin Apocalypse of ungekürzt. The Gospel of Nicodemus and Christ's Descent into Hell , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 79min
The Gospel of Nicodemus, otherwise known as the Acts of Pilate (Acta Pilati) is not assumed to have been written by Pilate, but rather to have been compiled from the official acts which were preserved in the praetorium at Jerusalem. The original is said to have been written by Nicodemus in Hebrew. The work gained a wide readership in the Middle Ages, with its popularity shown by the number of languages and versions in which it exists. Currently, there are known copies in Greek, Coptic, Armenian and Latin. These Acts are composed of three sections. The first section relates to the trial of Jesus and is similar to Luke 23. The second part regards the Resurrection. Then, in the third part, Christ's Descent into Hell (Descensus ad Infernos), for which there is no known Greek text. In it, Leucius and Charinus, two souls who are raised from the dead after the Crucifixion, tell the Sanhedrin the circumstances of the descent of Christ into Limbo. ungekürzt. Language: English. Ungeschehene Geschichte
The question "What would have happened if ..." is still seen by many historians as a useless dalliance. Alexander Demandt, however, recalls Friedrich Schiller's claim that culture unfolds only through playing games. If this is true, then it is also true for science. The playful occupation with possibilities is as important to science as controled and scheduled work according to tried and true methods. The core of this short volume consists not only of imagining and thinking up historical alternatives - what would have happened if Hitler had died in 1938? What would have happened if the Peasants' War of 1525 had succeeded? What if Pontius Pilate had set Jesus free? If Hannibal had marched on Rome after his victory at Cannae? In original and sometimes "brilliant diction" (Frank Schirrmacher, review in FAZ) Demandt points out that and how the thinking up of unrealized alternatives can be justified as part of the study of history.- Shop: buecher
