How does a man give up his life for someone he never met before? This man has been called by many titles: Saint of World War II, Holy Prisoner, Saint of Concentration Camps, Saint of the Press, Saint of Aviation, Saint of Progress, and Saint of the Poor. But I think the one he would prefer is "Catholic Priest".The devil uses any means to kill us. For so many years, in the United States, the Polish people have been the brunt of very poor ethnic jokes. It gets so bad that the minority - to become one of "the guys" - often pokes fun at itself! And then, most tragically, everyone believes it and the world is cheated of an extraordinary people. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bob Lord, Penny Lord. Stalky & Co. is a book, published in 1899 (following serialization in the Windsor Magazine) by Rudyard Kipling, about adolescent boys at a British boarding school. It is a collection of linked short stories in format, with some information about the charismatic Stalky character in later life. The character Beetle, one of the main trio, is partly based on Kipling himself. Stalky is based on Lionel Dunsterville, M'Turk is based on George Charles Beresford, and Mr. King is based on William Carr Crofts. The school, which is referred to as the College or the Coll., is based on the United Services College in Devon, which Kipling attended. The stories have elements of revenge, the macabre (dead cats), bullying, and violence and hints about sex, making them far from childish or idealized, unlike the typical school story. The critic Edmund Wilson, in The Wound and the Bow, was both shocked and uncomprehending about them. For example, Beetle pokes fun at an earlier, more earnest, boys' book, Eric, or Little by Little, thus flaunting his more worldly outlook. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gideon Emery. In 1972, at the age of 21, John Callahan was involved in a car crash that severed his spine and made him a quadriplegic. A heavy drinker since the age of 12 (alcohol had played a role in his crash), the accident could have been the beginning of a downward spiral. Instead, it sparked a personal transformation. After extensive physical therapy, he was eventually able to grasp a pen in his right hand and make rudimentary drawings. By 1978, Callahan had sworn off drinking for good and begun to draw cartoons.Over the next three decades, until his death in 2010, Callahan would become one of the nation's most beloved - and at times polarizing - cartoonists. His work, which shows off a wacky and sometimes warped sense of humor, pokes fun at social conventions and pushes boundaries. One cartoon features Christ at the cross with a thought bubble reading "T.G.I.F". In another, three sheriffs on horseback approach an empty wheelchair in the desert. "Don't worry," one sheriff says to another, "He won't get far on foot." Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot recounts Callahan's life story, from the harrowing to the hilarious. ungekürzt. The friendship of two tightly knit New York City couples whose bond isn't quite what it seems threatens to unravel after the publication of a story in a well-known literary magazine that bears a strange resemblance to their real life. This wry, urban novelette blurs the lines between love and lust, loyalty and betrayal, laying bare the power of literature to expose parts of ourselves we may not want to see. Christine Benvenuto oh-so-lightly pokes fun at Manhattan's privileged class, and her observations are all the more biting for their subtlety. Christine Benvenuto is the author of Sex Changes: A Memoir of Marriage, Gender, and Moving On, and Shiksa: The Gentile Woman in the Jewish World, both from St. Martin's Press, and her short stories and essays have appeared in many publications. She won the Brooklyn Film and Arts Festival's Brooklyn Nonfiction Prize for the story "Death in Brooklyn", was awarded a research fellowship to the Five College Women's Studies Mount Holyoke College, and won a Vogelstein Award for fiction. She is currently writing a novel. This is a short audiobook published by Shebooks - high-quality fiction, memoir, and journalism for women, by women. ungekürzt. Language: English. This inspiring true story of a single dad's long journey home pokes gentle (and not so gentle) fun at our frail human efforts to gain from our losses, and begin again. A returning son makes three promises to his ailing mother to be a good man after his wife attempts to replace him over Christmas. When the divorce - and a legal maneuver to separate him from his children - is filed on the day his mother dies, he is unprepared to defend himself against the male stereotypes he must fight to remain an equal parent. Too late to save his marriage, he confronts a different kind of divorce from something he has held onto much longer than his wife; his own father's expectations. Only his three small children can teach him again what he has ceased believing about himself, about keeping his promises, and about being their only dad. This revealing and emotion-packed story is about every flawed parent's daily quest for imperfect redemption told from inside one man's skin as he attempts the impossible - to become a good enough dad by going home. ungekürzt.
