Up from Slavery is the 1901 autobiography of Booker T. Washington detailing his slow and steady rise from a slave child during the Civil War, to the difficulties and obstacles he overcame to get an education at the new Hampton University, to his work establishing vocational schools - most notably the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama - to help Black people and other disadvantaged minorities learn useful, marketable skills and work to pull themselves, as a race, up by the bootstraps. He reflects on the generosity of both teachers and philanthropists who helped in educating Blacks and native Americans. He describes his efforts to instill manners, breeding, health and a feeling of dignity to students. His educational philosophy stresses combining academic subjects with learning a trade (something which is reminiscent of the educational theories of John Ruskin). Washington explained that the integration of practical subjects is partly designed to reassure the white community as to the usefulness of educating Black people. ungekürzt. Language: English. Welcome to the Museum of Everything; feel free to wander round our many galleries and experience the history of everything. Children are welcome, but please keep them in the bags provided." Here is the critically acclaimed comedy sketch show written and performed by Danny Robins, Dan Tetsell, and Marcus Brigstock - the team behind BBC2's We Are History. Based on the successful Edinburgh Festival show, it's a sketch show in disguise, themed around the world of museums, galleries, guided tours, stately homes, historial re-enactors, and obsessive collectors, and set in the vaguely mystical and apparently infinite environs of the Museum of Everything. Our guides are a pair of long-suffering, underpaid West Country museum attendants, who pop up to remind us of museum rules, announce forthcoming attractions, and reassure us that it's never far to the promised land of the gift shop, where you can buy leather bookmarks, novelty pencil sharpeners and fudge in the shape of Jane Austen. ungekürzt. Fifty-six-year-old Grace faces her worst nightmare: the death of her son. When Grace’s daughter confesses she’s at fault, Grace knows she should reassure her. But she can’t. Virgil is about to leave for his once-a-year cross-country trip, building inventory for his doll shop. In a haze of grief, Grace asks if she can go along. Sixty-five-year-old Virgil is gay and unsure how he feels about the gay rights battle. His longtime long-distance lover proposes marriage, something never before possible. But it would require Virgil to give up his home and business. Their journey takes them to a farm with five-legged cows and two-headed calves and a factory that makes the sweetest candy corn. Their futures are predicted over leftovers in a roadside diner, and they forage in flea markets and auctions and old barns. Together, Grace and Virgil cross road after crossroad, trying to find home and family. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Doug Greene. Accept it, he is dead. No, it's not true. It is. Everyone thinks so except you. When the family home in London is bombed in the early 1940s, Maddie and her two young daughters take refuge in Norfolk, in the country house where Maddie's husband Philip spent the summers of his childhood. But Philip is gone, believed to have been killed in action in northern France. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Maddie refuses to give up hope that she and Philip will some day be reunited. Something happened at Knyghton one summer years before. Something unresolved, that involved Philip, his cousin Lyle and a mysterious young woman named Flora. Maddie's curiosity, which turns to desperation to find out the truth, is shut down at every turn. No one will speak about it, and no one will reassure Maddie that Philip will ever return to Knyghton. A beautifully rendered novel about loyalty and betrayal, hope and despair, a husband and wife separated by secrets as well as by distance, One Moonlit Night is the extraordinarily powerful new novel from the bestselling author Rachel Hore.

Still, it’s just a matter of getting Gabriel’s help and investigating the man’s past to reassure herself that he’s guilty. He must be. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be a target. What is my calling? It is a question wrestled with throughout every stage of life but perhaps felt most acutely by the 20-something population. As Christians we might know that life to the fullest is experienced when we respond recklessly and wholeheartedly to the call of God. But how do we know what that is? And how do we pursue it once we do? This book tells the story of Rich Wilson and the growth Fusion, a movement that serves over 2200 churches across Europe in reaching students. Packed full of stories of ordinary people caught up in a much bigger God charged-movement, this book will inspire, challenge, reassure and encourage readers that God has a call and a plan for every single life. Exploring the adventures and adversity we face as we dare to live out a faithful response to the call to follow Jesus, these God encounters, ignition moments, dead ends, and failures will show how God can use all things to become tools for transformation and forge faith in the journey. ungekürzt.
