Viking London , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 223min
Viking Britain author Thomas Williams returns with a brief history of the interaction between the Vikings and the British to tell the story of the occupation of London.Nowhere in England suffered more Viking aggression than London. Between 842 and 1016, the city was subjected to serious assault on at least a dozen separate occasions. Sometimes she burned, and sometimes she surrendered; mostly she stood firm when all others had given up hope. And throughout it all she endured, remaking and remodelling herself, growing strong in adversity, unique in economic power, a crucible of cultures, enterprise and political intrigue: a maker of kings, and - ultimately - their capital.London is a city of spectres, of ghosts walking in the footsteps of other ghosts, and the Viking Age is perhaps its most forgotten shadowland. Memories shimmer through the alluvium and radiate through the pores of Museum collections, street names and stories. Viking London is a short book of the hidden history, archaeology and folklore of London in the Viking Age and its echoes through history. The narrative history that can be told is limited, and this book is, therefore, unorthodox and digressive in its structure and its layering of voices, impressions and characters, stories, objects and buildings.Thomas Williams treats the city as a living, breathing entity, one peopled with individuals shaped and warped by the forces that the urban environment exerts on its inhabitants. In this case, however, it is the forgotten ghosts of the Viking Age that provide the gravitational force - the shaping and distorting mass at the city’s heart. ungekürzt. Language: English. Migration into art: Transcultural identities and art-making in a globalised world
Migration into art addresses a topic of increasing importance to artists and scholars: migration as a transformative force that is remodelling artistic and art-institutional practices across the world. Exploring contemporary art's entanglement and critical engagement with migration and globalisation, it sheds light on how these processes are changing identities, cultures, institutions and geopolitics. The book focuses on three areas of interest. The first of these, identity and belonging, looks at how migration challenges both the identities of the people who migrate and those of the communities where migrants settle. The second, visibility and recognition, asks what impact increased mobility has on the art world and the careers and works of artists, and how discursive, structural and artistic changes pave the way for the idea of 'global art' and a growing recognition of artists with a migrant background. The third area of interest is the interrelation of aesthetics and politics, notably how these two fields may be balanced in artistic representations of migration, especially forced migration. Thematically and theoretically wide-ranging, Migration into art features a transnational selection of outstanding artists, including Rina Banerjee, Isaac Julien, Anish Kapoor, Bharti Kher and Danh Vo. It will serve as an excellent entry point for students and scholars alike into the study of an important aspect of the contemporary art world.- Shop: buecher

The Passenger: Ireland (eBook, ePUB)
Fully-illustrated, The Passenger collects the best new writing, photography, art and reportage from around the world.IN THIS VOLUME: The mass is ended by Catherine Dunne and Caelainn Hogan・ The Way Back by Colum McCann・A Trip to Westeros by Mark O'Connell・plus: life on the margins of two unions and right in the middle of Brexit, making war on each other for 30 years while playing on the same national rugby team, emigrating to the great enemy or transforming the country one referendum at a time, digging peat bogs and building cottages, talking of the sea in Gaelic, and much more..... The Passenger sets off to discover a land full of charm and conflict, a country that in just a few decades has gone from being a poor, semi-theocratic society to a thriving economy free from the influence of the Catholic Church. With the 1998 peace agreements, the conflict between nationalists and unionists seemed, if not resolved, at least dormant. But Brexit—with the ambiguous position it leaves Northern Ireland in—caused old tensions to resurface. The Passenger explores their ramifications in politics, society, culture, and sport. Meanwhile, south of the border, epochal transformation has seen a deeply patriarchal, conservative society give space to diversity, the only country in the world to enshrine gay marriage in law through a referendum. And there's a whole other Ireland abroad, an Irish diaspora that looks to the old country with new-found pride but doesn't forget the ugliness it fled from. Memory and identity intertwine with the transformations—from globalisation to climate change—that are remodelling the Irish landscape, from the coastal communities under threat of disappearing together with the Irish language fishermen use to talk about the sea, while inland the peat bogs, until recently important sources of energy and jobs, are being abandoned. From Catherine Dunne to Colum McCann, Mark O'Connell and Sara Baume, Irish (but not only) writers and journalists tell of a country striving to stay a step ahead of time. - Shop: buecher
