Nach seiner Versetzung zum Gebirgsjägerregiment 98 des späteren Generalfeldmarschalls Ferdinand Schörner stieg er sehr schnell zum Ausbildungsleiter des Sohnes des chinesischen Marschalls Chiang Kai-shek auf.Nach dem "Blumenkrieg" gegen Österreich zeichnete er sich während des Zweiten Weltkrieges zunächst im Polen- und dann im kurzen Feldzug gegen Jugoslawien aus, bevor er im Russlandfeldzug am 15. November 1941 als Oberleutnant und Chef der 7. Kompanie des Gebirgsjägerregiments 98 das 660. Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes für die erfolgreiche Verteidigung der eingeschlossenen Ortschaft Alexandrowka verliehen bekam.Seine militärischen Erfolge bei den Gebirgskämpfen im Hoch- und Waldkaukasus wurden am 23. Dezember 1942 nicht nur mit der Verleihung des 164. Eichenlaubes zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes als Hauptmann und Führer des II. Bataillons/Gebirgsjägerregiment 98 gewürdigt, sondern er wurde darüber hinaus auch bevorzugt zum Major befördert.Nach dramatisch verlaufenden Einsätzen auf dem Balkan als Kommandeur des Gebirgsjägerregiments 98 wurde Harald von Hirschfeld als jüngster General des Heeres zum Kommandeur der 78. Volkssturmdivision ernannt. Am 18. Januar 1945 kam er in dieser Funktion am Dunajec westlich von Tarnów (Polen) bei einem sowjetischen Luftangriff ums Leben.
