SOUTH LEBANON
2001, in Southern Lebanese village of Rashaya, at one of two last potteries there, the old man stumped the mould of clay with his bare feet ahead of the manual formation process on the rotator. His wife spoke about a forgotten history and a bloom of the South. Weaving a table cloth, the woman spoke of a time when her family worked hard to satisfy a demanding market for pottery. Rashaya had more than a dozen factories that kept everyone busy. The woman sipped her cardamom-blended coffee and reminisced about the times when their pottery was sold to Palestine, out of Bassa (a once thriving Palestinian village, now Shlomi in northern Israel). Their products were also sold to Damascus, and the Druze Mountain, and to the land of Matawleh (Shi'a) including Tyre and Nabatiyeh. By 1948 Israeli Arab war and the occupation of Palestine, South Lebanon, once a central thriving region among its neighbors, became isolated at the neglected periphery of Lebanon. Neglect was then complicated with conflict where Southerners kept trying to find their place among contesting Lebanese groups. The competition continues to this date.- Shop: buecher

Baghdad Sketches (eBook, PDF)
Freya Stark first journeyed to Iraq in 1927. Seven years after the establishment of the British Mandate, the modern state was in its infancy and worlds apart from the country it has since become. During her many years in Iraq, Freya Stark was witness to the rise and fall of the British involvement in the country as well as the early years of independence. Typically - and controversially - she chose to live outside the close-knit western expatriate scene and immersed herself in the way of life of ordinary Iraqis - living in the 'native' quarter of the city and spending time with its tribal sheikhs and leaders. Venturing out of Baghdad, she travelled to Mosul, Nineveh, Tikrit and Najaf, where she perceptively describes the millennia-old tensions between Sunni and Shi'a, time not having dissipated their hatred. In the 1940s she returned again, this time travelling south, to the Marsh Arabs, whose way of life has now all but disappeared; north into Kurdistan and later, Kuwait, in the days before the oil boom. Painting a portrait of both the political and social preoccupations of the day as exquisitely as she does the people and landscapes of Iraq, Baghdad Sketches is a remarkable portrait of the country as it once was.- Shop: buecher

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards: The History of Iran's Elite Military Organization , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 120min
In early November 2016, Salar Abnoush, a leader in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stated that the IRGC "will be in the US and Europe very soon." This quote came just before the US presidential election, a time when President Barack Obama was winding down his presidency and American society was busy reflecting on his past actions over the eight years of his presidency. Of those actions that incoming President Donald Trump has decided to focus on, "tearing up" the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (also more commonly known as the Iran Nuclear Deal) was near the top of the list. The crux of the deal focuses on Iran's agreement to roll back uranium stockpiles and enrichment capabilities in exchange for the ending of nuclear-related sanctions against Iran. Due to the IRGC's current involvement in the Iranian economy, they stand to gain from the ending of the sanctions. Possible threats to the deal by the incoming Trump Administration are of concern in Iran, and the threat of the IRGC spreading in western countries is a concern as well. The impact of the changing of terms to the Iran Nuclear Deal is just one concern among many of members of the IRGC. The multi-party conflict of the Syrian Civil War has pulled Iran deeper into this global conflict, as the numbers of refugees and internally displaced people rise. Through it all, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has held a position of power and prestige in Iranian society and has inspired both revolution and concern around the world. The IRGC is notable for its involvement in conflicts around the Middle East, particularly in supporting Shi'a groups through military training and finance, as well as backup support on the battlefield. This is not to say the IRGC enters into conflicts for the sake of being involved, but rather, they see these particular situations as serving the interests of Iran and furthering their brand of Shi'ism, a sect of Islam. The IRGC sees itself as a protector of Is ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Gallagher. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/078083/bk_acx0_078083_sample.mp3.
