Miranda Rollins has a wild spirit to match the land she loves. Her older brothers had sent her back east, hoping finishing school would do her some good, but she insisted on veterinary school instead. Now she's home again, hoping to hang her shingle, but the proud ranchers of Austin, Texas, refuse let a female near their livestock. Dylan Wrightman was attracted Miranda the first time they met, but he was on assignment, working undercover as a ranch hand until he found out who was rustling cattle and driving honest folk off their land. She was a distraction he could do without. It was just his luck that she was part owner of the very ranch where he'd be working. There was more than one way to deal with a headstrong woman - and tossing her over his lap for a sound spanking was sure to end any sparks that might flare between them. Or not. Based in part on the life and times of World War II US Navy dive-bomber hero Rear Admiral John Blitch, Jackson “Pop” Harrison returns from the war to his ancestral homestead on Sullivan’s Island near Charleston, South Carolina, where he finds himself without family...except those in the family plot under the spreading oak tree. There, like so many other Americans who had survived years of intense conflict, he goes about picking up the pieces of his shattered life while haunted by nightmares of his childhood and military combat.Almost immediately upon hanging up the shingle on “Pop’s Place”, the family residence-turned-boardinghouse, Pop is immersed in adventure after adventure with romance and betrayal, life and death, challenges and victories, and the drama of post-war low country.Confident in battle as a warrior, Pop is curious in discovering that he is suddenly unsure of himself outside the cockpit - particularly with his best friend’s beautiful young daughter who has matured while he was away at war. Though he narrowly escaped countless close calls in a war that claimed the lives of so many others, true to his selflessness, courage, and strength of character, Pop decides between life and making the ultimate sacrifice for the one he loves. ungekürzt. Learning the fundamentals of accounting is like learning a new language. Becoming "literate" in accounting doesn't take quite as long as learning Russian, Spanish, or Chinese, but the advantages are indeed comparable. It's safe to say that many people fear numbers - "I was terrible at math in school!" - so the word "accounting" calls up, for many, memories of days spent struggling over high school algebra. They prefer to leave the accounting to those who hang a CPA shingle outside their door, confident that the professionals will do a much better job of managing their money. But the fact remains that everyone should have a little accounting knowledge and, truly, the math involved isn't all that difficult. Nonetheless, knowing the basics, from how to balance your checkbook to learning to keep good financial records for tax purposes, can go a long way, whether you're a small business owner, investor, manager, lender, or just in charge of the household finances. Having a clear knowledge of your business's financial life is important. No one should be in the dark about their overall financial picture. That's a disaster waiting to happen. However, with a perfunctory knowledge of basic accounting principles, including assets and liabilities, creating financial statements, budgeting, and more, you'll be on the road to healthier relationship with your money. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio. ungekürzt. Language: English. In mid-1943 James Megellas, known as "Maggie" to his fellow paratroopers, joined the 82nd Airborne Division, his new "home" for the duration. His first taste of combat was in the rugged mountains outside Naples. In October 1943, when most of the 82nd departed Italy to prepare for the D-Day invasion of France, Lieutenant General Mark Clark, the Fifth Army commander, requested that the division's 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Maggie's outfit, stay behind for a daring new operation that would outflank the Nazis' stubborn defensive lines and open the road to Rome. On January 22, 1944, Megellas and the rest of the 504th landed across the beach at Anzio. Following initial success, Fifth Army's amphibious assault, Operation Shingle, bogged down in the face of heavy German counterattacks that threatened to drive the Allies into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Anzio turned into a fiasco, one of the bloodiest Allied operations of the war. Not until April were the remnants of the regiment withdrawn and shipped to England to recover, reorganize, refit, and train for their next mission. In September, Megellas parachuted into Holland along with the rest of the 82nd Airborne as part of another star-crossed mission, Field Marshal Montgomery's vainglorious Operation Market Garden. Months of hard combat in Holland were followed by the Battle of the Bulge, and the long hard road across Germany to Berlin. Megellas was the most decorated officer of the 82nd Airborne Division and saw more action during the war than most. Yet All the Way to Berlin is more than just Maggie's World War II memoir. Throughout his narrative, he skillfully interweaves stories of the other paratroopers of H Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The result is a remarkable account of men at war. It is 1946, and Frank O'Brian is a gumshoe in New York, in other words a private investigator. Having just qualified as a lawyer when the US entered WWII, he quits to work as a field agent for the Office of Strategic Services in Europe. On returning to New York, he found the notion of returning to the law too tame and hung up his PI shingle. In his first big case, the Vanowen case, he is involved in murder, blackmail, and double dealing. Using his wide range of skills, O’Brian quickly solves the mystery. Following the high-profile case, O’Brian is able to pick and choose his next case. When a retired general visits him, distraught that his daughter has been kidnapped, O’Brian agrees to take the case. Is General Simpson’s distress an act? Hired to pay the ransom, things spiral out of control for O’Brian, and he realizes he hasn’t been told the truth, and all is not as it seems. In the third case of this trilogy, the Sandover twins case, one of the twins hires O'Brian to find her missing sister. The girls are actresses, and Frank is dragged into the New York theater world, where it is not all glamour, fame, and riches. Were the twins tipped for the top? Frank knows time is of the essence. With the support and help of his assistant, Zelda, and his new partner, Luis Garcia, a Cuban immigrant and ex-cop, he sets out to find the missing girl. As with all Henke novels, the twists and turns of these stories continue right up to the end. ungekürzt.
