Book of Daniel Audiobook: From the Revised Geneva Translation , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 86min
This is a full, unabridged, uninterrupted version of the Book of Daniel, read by best-selling faith-based narrator Steve Cook. It contains no commentary or other human adornment; only the pure, living Word of God, profitable for teaching, convicting, correcting, and instructing in righteousness. The reading is taken from the Revised Geneva Translation of the Holy Bible. The RGT is a 21st-century update of the 1599 Geneva Bible. It eliminates archaic and potentially distracting 16th-century words, phrases, and punctuation, while at the same time maintaining the strict attention to original intent for which that version of the Holy Bible has always been known. In scholarly terms, it is a formal equivalency, featuring elements of both the Alexandrian and Byzantine text-types, predominantly the latter (e.g. it excludes the doxology of Matthew 6:13b, but includes Mark 16:9-20, John 7:53-8:11, and the Johannine Comma of 1John 5:7). Examples of translations which use the Alexandrian text-type include the NIV, NASB, and ESV. Examples of the Byzantine text type include the KJV, NKJV, and the 1599 Geneva Bible. In addition, the RGT strives to preserve the textual cadence and poetry that is so essential to Elizabethan literature. Just as in all preceding centuries, Biblical text in the 1500s was meant to be heard and seen as much as read because so many of those who received it were illiterate and needed to memorize it and speak it back to each other often in order to facilitate meditation. For that reason, the living and active characteristic of God’s word is very much kept in mind on these recordings. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Steve Cook. Verona, Vicenza, Lake Garda & the Veneto: Travel Adventures , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 441min
Italy's northernmost zone, the Veneto includes Padua, Verona, Vicenza, plus Venice itself, which once ruled the area. Some 5,000 Renaissance villas still stand, many by Palladio. A food- and wine-lover's paradise, it's also the most artistically rich region in Italy, and the most romantic, with the art of Giotto and Mantegna in Padua, the Roman ruins in Verona, the canals and palaces in Venice itself. Bellini, Tintoretto, Veronese, and Titian worked here. Experience their art and be part of their world, with the insights of an insider. Every detail is here about the foods, the sights, the best places to stay and eat. Vicenza is an essential stop on the itineraries of architecture lovers and Palladio's followers, but is unfortunately bypassed by many tourists traveling through the Veneto region who don't realize what it has to offer. This well-kept secret has made remarkable cultural and economical contributions to the region and merits a visit, if only for a few hours. Vicenza is an important Renaissance city with an impressive number of buildings dating back to the 1500s, many of them attributed to Andrea Palladio. It was during this period that Andrea di Pietro della Gondola came to Vicenza as a 16-year-old stone mason and through a combination of his own talent and a fine network of mentors, grew to be the great architect who dramatically transformed Vicenza's urban image. Palladio was commissioned to build palazzi for the city's wealthy residents, redesign several buildings which had been badly damaged by the League of Cambrai and to make the city better reflect the influence of the Republic of Venice. His finest works in the city include the Teatro Olimpico, the Basilica Palladiana, and the Palazzo Chiericati. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Angelo. Male Life Expectancy: How Men Can Live Longer , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 52min
It is the desire of all humans to live long on earth and fulfill their purpose for existence. Many have desired to live up to 80, 90, 100, and some even wish to live longer. While this desire to live long is a legitimate one, it often happens that people die when they least wished or expected. Historically, women live longer than men and this trend may continue for centuries and perhaps longer. Even with the sizable risk conferred by childbirth, women lived longer than men in 1900, and it appears that women have out-survived men at least since the 1500s, when the first reliable mortality data were kept. Sweden was the first country to collect data on death rates nationally; in that country's earliest records, between 1751 and 1790, the average life expectancy at birth was 36.6 years for women and 33.7 years for men. Death rates in less developed countries, whose citizens have limited access to cars, guns, and maternal care, also provide a measure of mortality before modernity. At present, the only countries in which male life expectancy exceeds that for females are those with long-standing sexual discrimination - including Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan - where social pressures and practices such as female infanticide and bride-burning result in unique losses of females. The fact that women live longer than men does not necessarily mean that they enjoy better health than men. It could be that women live with their diseases, while men die from them. Indeed, there is a difference between the sexes in disease patterns, with women having more chronic non-fatal conditions - such as arthritis, osteoporosis and autoimmune disorders - and men having more fatal conditions, such as heart disease and cancer. ungekürzt. The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness, and Recovery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 757min
The author of the best seller The Disappearing Spoon reveals the secret inner workings of the brain through strange-but-true stories. Early studies of the human brain used a simple method: Wait for misfortune to strike - strokes, seizures, infectious diseases, horrendous accidents - and see how victims coped. In many cases their survival was miraculous, if puzzling. Observers were amazed by the transformations that took place when different parts of the brain were destroyed, altering victims' personalities. Parents suddenly couldn't recognize their own children. Pillars of the community became pathological liars. Some people couldn't speak but could still sing. In The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons, Sam Kean travels through time with stories of neurological curiosities: Phantom limbs, Siamese twin brains, viruses that eat patients' memories, blind people who see through their tongues. He weaves these narratives together to create a story of discovery that reaches back to the 1500s and the high-profile jousting accident that inspired this book's title.* With the lucid, masterful explanations and razor-sharp wit his fans have come to expect, Kean explores the brain's secret passageways and recounts the forgotten tales of the ordinary people whose struggles, resilience, and deep humanity made neuroscience possible. *"The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons" refers to the case of French king Henri II, who in 1559 was lanced through the skull during a joust, resulting in one of the most significant cases in neuroscience history. For hundreds of years scientists have gained important lessons from traumatic accidents and illnesses, and such misfortunes still represent their greatest resource for discovery. Lost Land of the Dodo (eBook, PDF)
The Mascarene islands in the southern Indian Ocean - Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues - were once home to an extraordinary range of birds and reptiles. Evolving on these isolated volcanic islands in the absence of mammalian predators or competitors, the land was dominated by giant tortoises, parrots, skinks and geckos, burrowing boas, flightless rails & herons, and of course (in Mauritius) the Dodo. Uninhabited and only discovered in the 1500s, colonisation by European settlers in the 1600s led to dramatic changes in the ecology of the islands; the birds and tortoises were slaughtered indiscriminately while introduced rats, cats, pigs and monkeys destroyed their eggs, the once-extensive forests logged, and invasive introduced plants from all over the tropics devastated the ecosystem. The now-familiar icon of extinction, the Dodo, was gone from Mauritius within 50 years of human settlement, and over the next 150 years many of the Mascarenes' other native vertebrates followed suit. The product of over 30 years research by Anthony Cheke, Lost Land of the Dodo provides a comprehensive yet hugely enjoyable account of the story of the islands' changing ecology, interspersed with human stories, the islands' biogeographical anomalies, and much else. Many French publications, old and new, especially for Réunion, are discussed and referenced in English for the first time. The book is richly illustrated with maps and contemporary illustrations of the animals and their environment, many of which have rarely been reprinted before. Illustrated box texts look in detail at each extinct vertebrate species, while Julian Hume's superb colour plates bring many of the extinct birds to life. Lost Land of the Dodo provides the definitive account of this tragic yet remarkable fauna, and is a must-read for anyone interested in islands, their ecology and the history of our relationship with the world around us.- Shop: buecher

It contains no commentary or other human adornment; only the pure, living word of God; profitable for teaching, convicting, correcting, and instructing in righteousness. The reading is taken from the Revised Geneva Translation of the Holy Bible. The RGT is a 21st-century update of the 1599 Geneva Bible. At this writing, the RGT is one of only two major modern translations of the Holy Bible to do so. The other is the NKJV. Gospel of Matthew Audiobook: From the Revised Geneva Translation , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 166min
The Revised Geneva Translation (RGT) is a 21st-century update of the very first widely distributed version of the Holy Bible in English, The Geneva Bible.Just as in all preceding centuries, Biblical text in the 1500s was meant to be heard and seen, as much as read, because so many of those who received it were illiterate (especially Gentiles) and needed to memorize it and speak it back to each other often in order to facilitate meditation. To that end, the RGT strives to preserve the textual cadence and poetry that is so essential to Elizabethan literature, while at the same time eliminating archaic and potentially distracting 16th-century words, phrases, and punctuation. There is no commentary or other human adornment, only the simple, powerful, illuminating word of God (John 12:48-50).In scholarly terms, it is a formal or complete equivalency, based on the Byzantine text-type family of manuscripts. At this writing, the RGT is one of only three major modern translations of the Holy Bible to be so (the others being the NKJV and MEV), and the only one based primarily on the Received Text, rather than the Majority. All other modern translations, including the NASB, ESV, NIV, and NLT, use the shorter Alexandrian text-type family of manuscripts as their base text, which, in addition to excluding passages such as Mark 16:9-20, John 7:53-8:11, and the "Johannine Comma" of 1 John 5:7-8, also contains hundreds of other undocumented omissions from the Received Text.It is our hope that this project will be a living and active Bible for this generation, built for hearing and doing (Matthew 7:24), and that it will be profitable for teaching, convicting, correcting, and instructing in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16)...."...that your faith might not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God."
