Individualität wird kontrastierend zu einer in sich geschlossenen Gesellschaft skizziert, wobei Entwicklungen zu beiden Seiten hingegeben sind, so dass auch subtil-komische Elemente auftauchen - ohne jedoch mit dieser Komik die jeweiligen Protagonisten zu verraten. "Stille Nacht", "Winterwende" und "Worte" beschließen die bei der Erzählung "Maria" sichtbar gewordene innere Wende und bilden in einem Epilog eine Hommage an das Wort.
