Love, Laura and the Bomb
A Mood of Tradition and Imagery - Where has traditional American music gone? Is it lost in the noise and mainstreams of talentless icons? Are the moods of snowy mountains, railroad tracks, people on American Main Streets drinking coffee in a diner looking out a window, deep in thought or, a quiet walk through a snowy path in a Northeast forest, remembering a past love, disappearing from the music of today? The soulful themes have a refreshing renaissance upon hearing "Love, Laura and the Bomb", the new album from Luke Mitchem. After listening to the masterpiece several times, historic emotions have re-surfaced in me laced with the imagery of winter, love, love lost and any town America. Fiddles swell behind up-beat acoustic guitar and smiling lyrics like, "I was born in a house down on Main Street and 'till this day, that's where my daddy sleeps!". Haunting songs with solemn moods like "...love...", which starts out with the sound of a man walking through snow, and "Weeping Willow Tree", which traces the memory of a loss lost tragically, are beautifully intertwined on Luke's third album release in the past 18 months. The musical arrangements include a variety of harmonicas, pianos, guitars, violins, cellos, drums and Luke's trademark male/female harmonies throughout the album. Folk singers, new and old, would be proud of this artists' expanding musical vision. In short, the album is a 'must have' for those willing to truly listen to memories and images in shades of, silent hills, winter railroads, the sea and lost loves.- Shop: odax

1. Dan's Hands/The Pipefitters Jig/The Niagara/Convey's Reel/Jigs. English/Irish Caitriona's Fancy by Dan Hands already appears on the CD, 'The Twilight Shift' by Steamradio the folk/rock outfit featuring myself on Fender Telecaster and Dan on fiddle along with Andy McLaughlin, Dave Pratt, Tony Martin and Steve Farrow. This Latin inspired rendition is a more acoustic version and features the wonderful Amanda Lewis on fiddle. Caitriona's reel is followed by The Pipefitters Jig, which also appears on 'The Twilight Shift' and is followed by 'The Niagara' which was written during Cuig's 2002 tour of USA & Canada. Convey's is named after my oldest friend (we started school together) and sometime hill walking and drinking companion, Brian Convey. 2. The Burnhope Bhangra/The Glass Fiddle Reels...well, sort of!! Indian/English The Burnhope Bhangra was inspired by the playing of Julian Sutton. Julian and I were members of the occasional band 'The North Country Dance Band' and this Bollywood arrangement was written to compliment a particularly fiery lamb curry. I take the lead on Fender Stratocaster, and former neighbour and Feast of Fiddles fiddler, Tom Leary originally from Burnhope, County Durham is to be found chipping in with atmospheric drones while the main fiddle melody is carried by Dan Hands. During the Rub I composed the Stone Fiddle as a 48 bar jig with Paul Archer. I rewrote the melodic theme, put it into 4/4 time, and gave it a new title hence The Glass Fiddle. 3. La Maison Jaune Musette Waltz. Anglo/French. A nod to James Hill's Hornpipe composition and Django Reinhardt's swing jazz in one set!! The tune title refers to a wonderful holiday spent with Donal, Kate and Maria at my cousin Eileen's house in Grimaud Village on the Golf de St Tropez, France. The melodic inspiration comes via the hornpipe 'The Factory Smoke' by James Hill. Fellow Rub and Steel String Band member, sometime co composer and maker of my bouzouki and Selmer Style jazz guitars, Paul Archer, joins me on fiddle. 4. Dr Cate Matthew's/Randy's Jig/O'Boyle's trip to Durham Jigs. Irish. The first jig is named for my daughter Cate. Whilst studying medicine at Sheffield University, the original title was to be 'The Anticipation Jig' but the album has been so long in the making I've renamed it after her professional title. Between 2000 and 2007 I had the pleasure of being principal banjo and mandolin tutor for the new Folk and Traditional Music Degree at Newcastle University. When my former student, Damian O'Kane, graduated in July 2005, he played a measured slow version of 'Dr. Cate Matthews' in his finale concert. It was a lovely setting so I have tried to follow suit. Randy's is named after Cuig-tour-organiser, mate and piano player extraordinaire, Randy Andropolis, Sean added the Hammond organ in his honour. Dan Hands joins me in Randy's and the final tune, O'Boyle's jig. This 48 bar jig is named for my sister in law, Carmel and her husband, Manus O'Boyle, after a recent visit from Ireland and a nostalgic trip to Durham Cathedral. 5. Aycliffe Richard's Waltz The first part of Aycliffe was written by Paul Archer and started life as a Schottische. Re-cycling the melody as a waltz and completing it with a fresh B part, I think I have ended up with a tune which would not be out of place at a Sicilian wedding...any remake of The Godfather, Paul and I are listening to offers. 6. The White House Mazurka/The Lerwick Reel/Sully's no6/Rocks in your Head Mazurka/Reels. Irish. Norman's tune is a little gem of melodic simplicity and leads into The Lerwick reel, which I wrote prior to playing Shetland Folk festival with THE RUB in 1989. Former All Ireland banjo champion, composer of many tunes in the traditional style and supplier of my Bohee tenor banjo, Tony Sullivan wrote the oft-played tune, the No 6. 'Rocks' was so named after a comment by one time RUB member, Bob Fox, who declared 'You must have rocks in your head', for composing this meandering Bb reel. Randy Andropolis accompanies the set on piano. I supplied chord suggestions and asked for a typical vamp piano style, which he thankfully supplied in spades. 7. The Gower Slip Jig/The Shannon Bumblebee Slip Jigs. Irish. The Gower was written after an enjoyable appearance by Cuig at Gower folk festival in 2001. The Shannon Bumblebee was written for Mary Shannon. I met Mary at a Sharon Shannon and the Woodchoppers gig in The Arc, Stockton on Tees with Norman Holmes, Geoff Hughes & Vin Garbutt. After the concert, which was epic, she was very complimentary about the original Champion String Band Album and admitted to borrowing a James Hill tune from it for a Bumblebees Album. I thought she could do with another, hence this Slip jig. 8. Slow Steel/The Steel Reel/The Shooting Star/The Gluepot Reels. Irish. The setting for these and many other compositions was originally aired at the long running Monday night session in the Colpitts Hotel, Durham. That session has now transferred to the Elm Tree a few hundred yards away. Slow Steel is a stately, melancholic version of The Steel Reel. Steel, is the name given to the rural town land around Whitley Chapel near Hexham. Whitley Chapel is also the site of the workshop and home to the maker of some of my finest instruments, Stefan Sobell. Paul Archer wrote the second reel, The Shooting Star, which many rate as his finest tune to date. Paul, an all round Renaissance man as well as being one of my oldest friends is a prodigious fiddler, guitarist, luthier, band co-member and occasional co-composer. The Gluepot Reel is written by friend, Rub and Cuig member also occasional co- composer, brilliant flute player and flute maker, Norman Holmes. I have slightly altered the A part from the original, for which I ask Norman's forgiveness. 9. Maria's Waltz Scots/American. Written for my wife, Maria. Apart from providing the original guide track and some accompaniment on guitar, I happily left the performing duties to Dan Hands and Champion String Band co-member Chuck Fleming on fiddles. Dan leads us into the waltz with the first phrase followed by Chuck, thereafter it's turn and turn about before they play in unison. Randy's piano playing is exactly what I requested with a very Shetland/Nashville take on a country waltz, and Sean completes the line up on bass. 10. O'Hanlon's Crooked Road Reel/Waltz. American Bluegrass. This tune is named for my sister in law Kate, and husband Donal O'Hanlon, my Irish playing partner of many years. Donal and I along with Maria and Kate toured America and played 'The Crooked Road' Appalachian bluegrass trail in the summer of 2007. This is my take on a reel with an old time/bluegrass feel, and the set concludes using the same melody in waltz time. I didn't own a bottle-neck, so Sean's tin whistle proved a useful substitute. 11. The Unresolved Reel/The Cunningham's of O'Hagan Drive Reels. Irish. The first reel I found difficult to give a natural ending, hence The Unresolved. I named the second reel for my sister Geraldine and her husband Pat & family who live in Toronto, Canada. I was fortunate to be able to persuade piano whiz and multi instrumentalist, Randy Andropolis to accompany during one of his visits from America to meet up with his daughter Christi, when she was a student on the Newcastle University Folk Music degree course. Amanda Lewis again joins me on fiddle. 12. The Toneneave/Colin Tom's/Julian's Jig Schottische/Horo/Jig. Scots/Hungarian/English. This is my attempt at a new genre for 21st century folk. Welcome to the Ethno Techno category. Toneneave or Tom & Dave as Bob Fox often announced it, was the name of the town land where my forbears lived and farmed in Magheracloone near Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan prior to emigration to England and America. The second tune was named for fiddler Tom Leary who has over the years chided and cajoled me into getting this album out. It has been written to compliment the double time accompaniment of the schottische and is meant to hav- Shop: odax

Fiddleride
Clarke Wright has been playing music in some form or another since the early 1970s. He worked with David Ferretta and the Sunday River Boys in Denver in the mid '70s and appears on their Biscuit City recording "You Can Dress 'Em Up, But You Can't Take 'Em Out." If you ask Clarke how long he has been playing fiddle he will tell you, "Long enough to where you would say, 'Wow, shouldn't you be better than that?'" He has spent over 30 years with The Hollywood Rodeo Band and later their pared down acoustic version, High, Wide and Handsome. HRB/HWH recorded 7 albums and has toured extensively, visiting over 40 nations and territories, entertaining our nation's Armed Forces. He picked up the fiddle 'sometime back in the 20th Century', and is self taught. "When I hit a wrong note or clam-out a break I just blame my teacher," Clarke says. Originally from Minnesota and the son of an Episcopal Priest, Clarke has evolved into "A Heckuva Fiddle Player" (AHFP). Clarke plays mostly fiddle and guitar, but also mandolin and bass sometimes. He plays 4 and 5-string fiddles and gets his inspiration and is influenced by Byron Berline, Bob Wills, Tommy Jackson, Leon Rausch, Tom Morrell and the Time Warp Tophands, Johnny Gimble, Vassar Clements, Chet Atkins, Randy "Snuffy" Elmore...- Shop: odax

Fiddling Thomsons, Music for Both Hands
Lively tunes in styles from England, Hungary, Ireland, USA, Scotland, Germany, Canada, and Tex/Mex. The Fiddling Thomsons, Brennish and his father Ryan, have been involved together with fiddling, dance, and music since Brennish was an infant. Ryan is a right handed former northeastern USA Fiddle champion who taught himself how to play violin all over again left handed after he suffered a disability involving his right shoulder. As Ryan was relearning how to play the violin he often brought Brennish to his various performances along with a blanket for Brennish to sleep on as evenings drew late. At home he would often play his violin next to Brennish's crib. One day, at 18 months of age, Brennish unexpectedly grabbed the violin bow from his father's hand and began drawing it across the violin strings in a slow deliberate manner. As he learned to talk he began asking for a violin to play. When Brennish turned 2 his father bought him a tiny 1/32 sized violin and taught him to play the country fiddle tune - Boil Them Cabbages Down. As Brennish got older he began performing with his dad at various events including concerts, dances, and at teaching workshops. At 13 years of age Brennish and his dad won the Twin Fiddle award at Lowell National Historical Park, in Lowell, Massachussetts, USA. On this album, at age 14, Brennish plays fiddle/violin, French Canadian wooden spoons, seed pod percussion, frotoire, (zydeco rub board) and beatbox vocals. His Dad plays fiddle/violin, banjo, accordion, pennywhistle, cajun triangle, wooden flute, and piano/keyboard. In order for the two of them alone to play all of these different instruments, Ryan and Brennish first recorded each of 18 different tunes as a duet using two of their instruments. After that they recorded additional tracks which included the other instruments. Each tune on this album was learned in the traditional way, by ear, from the playing of other musicians.: 1. Scottish - Lord MacDonald's Reel, "Leather Britches," 2:11 Ryan and Brennish play this lively reel here as an unaccompanied twin fiddle duet. Lord Macdonald's Reel is the Scottish name, and Leather Britches is the name often used in the southern mountains of the USA. They play the tune for square and contra dances, or as an instrumental piece during a bluegrass performance. 2. French Canadian set - Gaspe, La Bastringue, Pays de Haut, 5:02 French folk music is popular in New England and these tunes serve well for traditional contra dances and French quadrilles. This medley of Quebecois tunes (from the Canadian province of Quebec) was first recorded as a twin fiddle duet. Brennish added wooden spoons and vocals, and his dad added piano and wooden flute. 3. Irish - Egan's, Rattlin Bog, (Kerry polkas) 2:40 Brennish plays fiddle and his dad plays pennywhistle on this set of fast polkas often used for Irish set dancing. 4. Hungarian - Friss Czardas, "Fast Dance," 2:46 Brennish learned this gypsy tune on his violin and then taught it to his dad. They recorded it as a fiddle and banjo duet and then Ryan added on a piano part. 5. Swedish - Gärdebylåten, a Ganglat "Walking Tune," 2:56 This tune is commonly used as a processional march for weddings. Ryan and Brennish recorded it with twin fiddles and then Ryan added a piano accompaniment. 6. USA - Kitchen Gal, a southern square dance tune, 2:10 The Thomsons first recorded this as a twin fiddle duet and then Ryan added on old time clawhammer style banjo. 7. Irish - Connaughtman's, My Darling Asleep, Morrison's, jigs, 4:38 Ryan and Brennish recorded this Irish jig medley as a twin fiddle duet. Brennish then added wooden spoons and his dad added pennywhistle, flute, and piano. 8. English - None Such, dance tune from the 1600's, 1:43 The Thomsons first recorded this ancient English country dance tune as a twin fiddle piece. Ryan then added keyboard and Brennish added beatbox vocals as percussion. The 1600's meet the 21st century. 9. USA - Rag Time Annie, Bluegrass, 2:12 The Thomsons recorded this hot tune first with twin fiddles and then Ryan added piano. It's a staple of old time southern square dancing and an essential tune in the repertoire of country and bluegrass fiddlers. 10. Canadian - Ookpik "Eskimo" Waltz, 3:06 Ryan learned bits and pieces of this beautiful tune by ear in Idaho from other fiddlers in the 1970's. He assembled and customized it in his own fashion and style of playing. He discovered 30 years later that the original composer was a musician from British Columbia named Frankie Rodgers. Brennish learned it from hearing his dad play it, and they often perform it together in concerts and for dances. They recorded it first with twin fiddles and then Ryan added piano. 11. Irish - Trip to Durrow, a reel, 3:42 Ryan learned this tune at Irish pub sessions and contra dances. Brennish heard his dad play it, liked it, and then quickly learned it by ear. They recorded it with twin fiddles and then Ryan added the piano part. 12. French cajun - Bayou Two Step, 3:04 Ryan learned this tune from cajun fiddler Michael Doucet. Brennish picked it up from his dad. The Thomsons first recorded it as twin fiddles playing similar versions of the melody. Brennish added a third fiddle part playing a low rhythm accompaniment along with frotoire for percussion rhythm. Ryan added a cajun triangle. 13. Scottish - The Mason's Apron, a reel, 2:17 Ryan learned this tune from fiddler Aly Bain, and Brennish learned it from his dad. Ryan and Brennish first recorded this fast and lively reel with twin fiddles and then Ryan added piano. 14. Tex/Mex polka - Sean's Squeezebox, by Ryan Thomson, 1:25 Ryan composed this Texas/Mexican style tune on keyboard accordion and named it in honor of his nephew Sean Thomson, whom he had given a small accordion as a gift. Brennish learned it on fiddle and they have recorded it here as a fiddle and accordion duet. Brennish added percussion using a dual set of south sea islands seed pods as shakers. 15. USA - Soldier's Joy, a southern square dance tune, 2:11 Ryan Thomson originally learned this old time mountain tune on banjo and then transfered it to fiddle. Brennish learned it from hearing his dad play it on fiddle. On this track Brennish plays fiddle while his dad plays clawhammer banjo. 16. German - Huntsman's Chorus, 2:14 Ryan learned this tune from the Canterbury Country Dance Orchestra. This folk dance tune has a melody similar to an excerpt from Carl Maria Von Weber's famous opera - Der Freischutz. Von Weber called it the 'Hunter's Chorus,' ('Jagerchor,' in German) and it pertains to the joy of hunting. Ryan and Brennish play it often for folk dancers. They recorded it with twin fiddles and then Ryan added piano. 17. French cajun - Lake Arthur Stomp, 3:13 Ryan learned this cajun two step from the Balfa Brothers cajun band. On this recording the Thomsons started with twin fiddles. Ryan fiddles the melody while Brennish plays a second fiddle as accompaniment. Brennish then added frotoire, and his dad added cajun triangle. 18. USA - Dickson County Blues, a Tennessee fiddle tune, 2:37 Ryan learned this melody by ear from another fiddler many years ago and then shaped it into his own style. That fiddler had learned it from an old 78 disc record of a recording of fiddler Arthur Smith. Brennish picked it up from hearing his dad play it. They play it here on unaccompanied twin fiddles. The Thomsons are available to travel anywhere to perform and lead educational workshops in the styles of music that they play. They reside in New England, USA, and can be contacted through their web site at captainfiddle.com.- Shop: odax
