Family Man
Family Man is the culmination of more than forty years of study and planning, and almost three years of nurturing the process of birth. Of course, the process was Skipper's actual life. He was destined to make this album. As a teenager, Skipper would be late for school because he had to listen again, to a new R&B tune he had recently purchased. He fronted a band called 'The Fascinations' that played the local teen scenes during the early years, replicating the styles of James Brown, Tommy Hunt, Jackie Wilson, Jerry Butler and various other artists of the period. Garnering acceptance and popularity while honing his craft, he graduated to a vocal group called 'The Avalons'. This group based on the style of The Platters, was like going from high school to college. Here he practiced harmonies, choreography and, because of the multiple lead vocals, he acquired the eclectic depth of styles he now possesses. Skipper then went on to join 'The Platters', touring the world replicating the magic that the original Platters was famous for and absorbing other styles to create his own. All of this life experience is what can be found in every track of Family Man. The artistry of the lead vocals, Skipper's life experiences in the collaborations of the original selections and his heartfelt emotions in 'At This Moment' and 'When Something's wrong with My Baby'. Those that have been privileged to listen to this compilation in it's early stages have commented: It is obvious that Skipper has spent a long time honing his craft, An interesting mix of songs, with a really fresh approach, I really like the 'real' feeling. Not engineered to death, It is like being at a live concert in a really great room. Beautiful. Family Man will take you through an emotional journey. It will cause you to reflect on your life and relationships. It will ask you to consider the state of our world ecology and it will command you to boogie in your seat. We hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as we enjoyed creating it.- Shop: odax

Sound of One
Andy Garbi Debut solo album: the sound of one Label: Adventures in Sound Catalogue: AIS CD1001 "Inspirational...Garbi's extraordinary, multi-octave vocal range dazzles" Metro "Melodies turn into natural phenomena, into a foggy morning or a swelling ocean. Yet they are all pervaded by a glowing grace, a sublime beauty and dignity" Zillo Magazine "This is a remarkable album...It moves with much deeply felt sensitivity and beauty: with echoes of Samuel Barber's famous Adagio and Debussy's Des Pas sur la Neige plus Brian Eno's old school ambient" Newmusicreviews. Co.UK "Superb music" Musician Magazine "Beautiful" Hans Joachim Roedelius A deeply moving experience from the multi-award winning vocalist and composer, this haunting music embodies Garbi's experiences of extreme emotional and geographical environments. Featuring Andy's distinctive voice that spans almost four octaves and former Jazz Musician of the Year James Hesford on Cello, Violin and Viola, the sound of one is a Neo-classical work, reminiscent of the "holy minimalism" of Arvo Pärt, John Tavener and Henryk Górecki and also the crafted ambience of EG, 4AD and ECM labels. Recently featured on Radio 3's Late Junction, Classic FM's 'The Chill', '21st Century Classics' and The Chiller Cabinet playlist, Andy's dark, emotive style has been selected twice already to represent the UK for music internationally - gaining letters of commendation from the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Arts Council of England. * WINNER * - PRS Foundation For New Music ATOM Award - (Advances Toward Original Music) - Channel 4 Ideasfactory Film Music Award - (selected by oscar winning film composer Stephen Warbeck) - Birmingham Conservatoire Masters Prize - About Andy Garbi Once Upon a Time... there was a zonally deaf boy whose ears bled. Doctors tried to convince his mother that he could not hear at all but she knew different. He was just prone to being lost in his own head - that still happens but that was then and this is now. Strange that he should choose music to fill his life - here's how it all came about... Voice Andy is no stranger to experimenting with voice. A sparsely equipped sound studio at Art College was the catalyst for him to start producing soundscapes for his films using nothing more than what he could create vocally. In the studio there was no equipment available that could produce anything remotely akin to what he wanted so instead he sang into samplers and used chants and breath to create percussion and texture. He developed these techniques whilst fronting bands and sang whatever came naturally to him. This included using unorthodox techniques and scales which enhanced this 'other-worldly' feel. Although he had no previous exposure to vocal techniques of different cultures the press started to compare him to singers such as Natasha Atlas and Lisa Gerrard. Keen to know more Andy sought out Invaders of the Heart and the 4AD label and also began to look at Bulgarian music, Hindustani classical, Mongolian throat singing and Arabic muezzine styles finding something of what he already did in all of them. This sparked off a journey to India in 2000 to explore this inherent quality in his voice. Andy spent time in Calcutta with vocal master Santanu Bandyopadhyay and even joined a band in the Himalayas comprising Tibetan and Ghurkha musicians (click here for more info). Andy's voice has been mapped out at spanning almost four octaves and not being trained in any particular genre has allowed him to experiment and develop his own idiosyncratic style. Sometimes he uses lyrics, at other times he uses phonetics, even singing invented words. Occasionally lyrics just seem to get in the way - this is when he prefers to create pure sounds because they seem somehow more raw, more direct than words. Andy has sung with the following artists/bands: Nigel Kennedy Live performances Cellorhythmics Starcatcher (Rise of the Cellorettes), Live Performances Suns of Arqa Live Tours Headhunters Lead Vocalist/Co-founder Celtarabia Lead Vocalist / Live Tours Celluloid Backing Vocalist ACE Dance & Music Vocalist/Composer Music Andy's musical world is a retinal image of film, fairy tale and cult children's TV. As well as using his voice Andy loves to use found sounds that he records binaurally in different locations from the clamour of industrial sites to the eerie stillness of remote areas of the world. He manipulates these in the studio and uses them as another instrument alongside classical and traditional instruments from several cultures together with music technology. His dark emotive style has been featured on Classic FM's Chiller Cabinet and Late Night Lisa, also garnering acclaim from the spheres of stage, screen and dance. Although he is currently exploring the ambient neo-classical world, his background in World Dance, Urban Fusion and his own Anglo-Asian heritage means that he is always seeking out new territory. It is this passion that has gained the support of leading artists in all fields of the performing arts. In just five years he has worked with the violin virtuoso Kennedy, award-winning playwright Chris O'Connell, and Birmingham Royal Ballet. He has also made headline appearances at festivals across Europe. Andy has always felt privileged to perform. As co-founder of the group Headhunters he has headlined one of the largest stages at Glastonbury Festival as well as European festivals such as Terschelling's Oerol in the Netherlands. With Headhunters, Suns of Arqa and Celtarabia he has performed at festivals such as The Big Chill and Trans Musicale in France on the same bill as The Prodigy, Jah Wobble, Roni Size, Loop Guru, Trans Global Underground, Banco de Gaia, System 7, Square Pusher, Mix Master Morris, Peat Bog Fairies, Baka Beyond, Kangaroo Moon and Roy Harper. Through his successes of working internationally with music from different cultures Andy was offered a prestigious invitation in 2003 to represent the UK for music. The commission was from a groundbreaking Anglo/Dutch performing Arts initiative and the resulting composition/performance earned him a commendation from both the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Arts Council of England (click here for more information). Also in 2003 and despite having no formal training in music Andy was invited to study for a Masters degree in composition at Birmingham Conservatoire. He graduated with distinction in 2005 and was also awarded the Conservatoire Masters Prize. In the same twelve-month period Andy also won two other awards for composition from Channel 4 and the PRS Foundation (click here for more information). As well as his solo work Andy has always welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with other artists which has brought his style to an increasingly diverse audience. He sang at the BAC Burst festival (May '05) with physical Theatre group Gecko and progressive band Cellorhythmics and has most recently sung with guests from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Several new projects will see Andy working with Japanese Taiko Drumming, experimental theatre and a new Suns of Arqa album (see news page for up and coming collaborations). Better Part of You
Hailing from Saskatoon Canada, Ash Jones combines the Goo Goo Dolls and Ben Harper with a strong undertone of Axl Rose, carving out a musical niche all of his own. Combining the essential elements of poetry, pop sensibility, innate musicianship and powerful thought invoking melody, Ash fishhooks listeners with raw emotion and sincerity. 'Everything I write comes from personal experience, I'm basically just trying to delve inside people and connect with the array of emotions life has to offer.' After years of honing his craft in the trenches of the Saskatchewan acoustic scene, Ash released his debut independent release "Crashing Down" in 2002. The title track was instantly well received, earning Ash a place in the top 12 out of 10,000 entries in the 2003 Canadian National Songwriting Competition. After the competition Ash enlisted Veteran Canadian rockers Angelo Frassetto, Steve Bunka, and Kyle Kildaw from the Touchtone Gurus to perform on and help produce his album "Better Part of You'. Like all great laid plans and intentions, the album was to be released in 2007 once Ash had moved to the London, England but the 'perfect mix' seemed to elude the project for the next few years. Ash continued to live and perform in London throughout 2006 and 2007 garnering great performance reviews. On why "Better Part of You" took so long to complete, Ash states " I had a vision in my mind of how I wanted this album to sound and a plan for how I wanted to achieve it but with so many players and their often competing visions to contend with, a lot of the plans overtime, became unglued. At the end of the day it is the album I've always wanted and dreamed of making. It sounds exactly as I intended and regardless of the time it took to create, I stand proud behind it and will now release it into the atmosphere and let fate take it's course." "Better Part of You" will be internationally released on Nov 20th 2010.- Shop: odax

Music for Voice
THE OWL AND THE PUSSY-CAT AND OTHER SONGS OF LOVE Here are eight songs by diverse poets. Among them are Edward Lear's whimsical yet touching nonsense-romance, "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat," Conrad Aiken's plaintive remembrance of a life partner, "Music I Heard with You," and Daniel Ladinsky's exuberant "There Is a Wonderful Game," an invitation to realize the transcendent unity of all mankind. FOUR SONGS OF EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY This cycle includes "Recuerdo", one of Millay's most familiar poems, in which the poet recalls a happy night traveling back and forth on the Staten Island Ferry, and "Afternoon on a Hill", a song of youthful delight in nature. SANCTUS This is a portion of the Mass, in Latin. Composed in five sections, the short text becomes a full canvas of personal, spiritual feeling: from rapturous praise, to quiet and steadfast faith, to a sense of urgent pleading that we, on earth, become aware of God's glorious presence. TOM HERMAN'S compositions have been performed both in the United States and Canada as well as in Europe. He has written art songs, chamber music, and music theater pieces for which he served both as composer and lyricist. He has received various grants for composition, including a National Endowment Fellowship Award for his theater piece "Objets trouvés." Mr. Herman has taught at Fordham University and Sarah Lawrence College. REBECCA LUKER starred in the acclaimed revival of "The Music Man," garnering Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations for her role as Marian. She appeared in the Kennedy Center production of Stephen Sondheim's "Passion," and her other theatrical credits include roles in "Mary Poppins," "Nine," "The Sound of Music," " Show Boat," "The Secret Garden," and "The Phantom of the Opera." She performed in the New York City Opera production of "Brigadoon" and has appeared with many orchestras, including the New Jersey and St. Louis Symphonies, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Boston Pops. Her numerous recording credits include "Leaving Home," "Anything Goes: Rebecca Luker Sings Cole Porter," "The Sound of Music," "The Secret Garden," and "The Music Man." REVIEW BY ROB LESTER at talkinbroadway.com: Setting various texts and poems with moods ranging from dreamy-romantic to sorrowful to the reverence of the Latin Mass, composer Tom Herman has found the dream of a muse for his music-Broadway's Rebecca Luker. The CD begins with a sprightly tune for the kid-friendly Edward Lear tale of the inter-species marriage of "The Owl and the Pussycat" before going into more serious material, with some pieces that could be classified as art songs. The often-surprising melody lines are variously tender and intimate or soaringly joyful or meditative. Versatile Rebecca Luker truly serves the material. Happily, the wide-ranging melodies with some shimmering ascents and elastic lines also become a showcase for her strong and glorious, clear soprano voice. Her chameleon-like performance proves her to be comfortably at home with each piece. Her strengths include projecting a sense of awe in both the Mass and various love-struck romantic ruminations. Rhapsodically, "Recuerdo" relishes a rush of memories of a heady night for two lovers, one of the five poems of Edna St. Vncent Millay. Not all is sweetness and light. Addressed subjects include grieving and loss, both for specific people and times gone by. Though they confront sorrow, the musical choices and interpretation keep the sad subject matter in a thoughtful mode, rather than drowning in melodramatic mawkish misery. There's a classical elegance here that makes feelings float rather than spurt. The long-lined legato approach with a high voice sometimes has the music and voice demand a listener's initial attention more so than the words. The album title stating this is music for voice perhaps justifies this. There is no question, however, that agendas for mood-setting and broad strokes are definitely achieved, even if some specific images that are painted in the words are swept along in the wave of music. These assert themselves more with repeated listenings and by following the full texts provided in the booklet (which also characterizes each piece succinctly in liner notes by the composer). Accompaniment does not distract or diffuse, as it is kept minimalistic. Recital style, there is just piano for the first 12 tracks (well done by Brian Zeger for eight and Joseph Thalken for the cluster of four short Millay poems). The Sanctus features Grant Wenaus on piano and adds the cello of Clay Ruede, a great asset not just for variety but for his fine work. Especially effective and evocative is "I, Icarus" (text by Alden Nowlan), where the speaker recalls, "I lay on my bed and willed myself to fly." Without resorting to telegraphing or cliché, composer Herman makes musical choices to illustrate the poem's images of flight and the repeated words "above," "higher" and "slowly" to tell the story and give it also an attitude of determined convincingness and a longing for a long-ago time. Taking up more than one third of the album's playing time (49:43), the Sanctus from the Mass is in five movements, just using the few lines over and over, so it's in it's own category. It's a matter of glorying in the glory (of the Lord and the Heaven-sent music and lovely, lithe Luker vocal sounds that swell and soar). Recording classical music and a reverential approach is not a new feather in the singer's cap: she has lent her voice to a series of Aria albums that use her soprano's ethereal quality. Here it's the brightness and clarity and directness of the approach that are front and center. Still, listeners who are strictly Broadway fans and tend not to be musical genre-jumpers may not be as willing to make the leap to the art song and religious territory. But many admirers of Rebecca Luker's gleaming and warm soprano should find the same qualities they've enjoyed on her many cast albums. As for composer Tom Herman, who is new to me, I enjoy his talents on display here and am interested to hear a musical he has on tap, Jack's Back. One piece here has his own words, "Birthday Horoscope for B.R." and that shows sensitivity, too, like his affectionate attention to other words he sets. His other career is as a massage therapist (you may have seen him play one in the 2006 comic film Borat), and Music for Voice, indeed, with it's soothing sounds and sure-handed musicality is like a massage for the ear and brain. There's much to relax to-and be moved by-here, when musical masseuse meets marvelous chanteuse.- Shop: odax

Everything Dies
Die UK Emo-Punks um Em Foster beschäftigt sich mit Gender-Dysphorie und ist im März mit Milk Teeth auf Tour. When Em Foster, songwriter-in-chief for Watford-based rock band Nervus, began to write songs in her bedroom, she did so purely as a means of personal catharsis, a way to exorcise her demons through rapturous melodies. Following up on the critically acclaimed debut 'Permanant Rainbow', Everything Dies deals with exterior forces and how they play on the mind of someone dealing with gender dysphoria. Like all great sophomore albums, it expands the bands horizons without compromising on their original ideals. Far more direct than its predecessor, with a confrontational edge, Em s vulnerability turns to anger at a 21st century society still unwilling to accept that gender isn't simply defined within two restrictive parameters. In June 2017, Nervus co-headlined an 10-date DIY UK tour with Riot Grrrl fuzz rock duo Kamikaze Girls as well as garnering much coveted slots at Manchester Punk Festival and Brighton's Washed Out Festival. Most impressive of all, in October 2017, Nervus played their first show overseas at Fest in Gainesville Florida. The show was so packed, some punters were refused entry due to the venue being filled to capacity. They've also been handpicked as one of the bands to support Southampton horror-punks Creeper during their 'The Theatre of Fear' tour, which includes a date at the prestigious 2000-capacity Shepherd's Bush Empire. Great Escape
Formed in the mountains of BC in 2004 BC's Sleddogs, consisting of Kenny Byrka, Michael Donley, and Eric Funk, have made a real mark on the Canadian rock landscape. Sleddogs vocally driven melodies are powerfully gritty yet sensual in their delivery led by Byrka's persuasively passionate lead vocals emphasizing the rich poetic and philosophical lyric content. The cosmic energy from the retro groove and slide of guitarist Donley further adds a unique potent punch along with his gut hitting vocal, all supported by the extremely solid chest pounding power of Funk on the drum kit. Their stunningly accomplished debut album, Great Escape, has labelled them as serious contenders, and it's first single, Bye Bye Life was a multi-format radio hit, cracking the Hot AC Top 70. The debut video also received out of the box adds from both MuchMoreMusic and MusiMax. Supporting the wide spread airplay, the Kelowna based trio raced across Canada in 2005-2006 playing a total of 280 shows in just 18 months adding many live radio appearances along the way. The follow up single Perfect Place surpassed expectations by charting in the Hot AC Top 40 and cracking the MediaBase ROCK Top 100. The Perfect Place video was added to medium rotation on MuchMoreMusic, as well as garnering a feature interview on The Loop Weekend in which they were "...touted as Canada's next Tragically Hip." The same video was nominated as a finalist in Italy's Digifest.net. Sleddogs followed up the success of Perfect Place with another cross Canada tour, concentrating on Eastern Canadian shows as a result of the success of the single. On CHOM97 in Montreal, Perfect Place received the third highest number of spins next to Cold Play. This year at the Canadian Radio Music Awards, BC's Sleddogs are nominated in the Best New Group - Hot AC category for their single Perfect Place. Vernon, BC played host to the 4th Annual Okanagan Music Awards 2006, where the Sleddogs, who were nominated for six awards including: Album of the Year - Great Escape, Group of the Year, Male Artist of the Year - Kenny Byrka, Rock/Pop Artist or Group of the Year, Song of the Year - Happy Face, and Songwriter of the Year - Kenny Byrka, had the honor of taking home the hardware for Group of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, and Rock/Pop Artist or Group of the Year.
